Draft Soon to Take Dads as Allotments Up
WASHINGTON — Chairman Vinson (D-Ga) of the House Armed Services committee said today the draft soon will be extended to married men with dependents.
Without taking fathers, Vinson told reporters, Draft Boards will not be able to meet future calls to increase the size of the Armed Forces.
Vinson made the statement just after the House passed a bill providing for allotments of from $80 to $165 a month for GI families.
“This means,” he said, “that Selective Service now can broaden its calls to include men with children who are within draft age.”
“That is the purpose of the Allotment act, to make financial provision for the families of such men.”
WASHINGTON — A Senate-House conference committee today neared a final compromise on broad anti-inflation legislation. Members expressed confidence the last details would be settled before nightfall and would be in President Truman's hands before his talk to the nation tomorrow night.
One problem still to be worked out:
At the end of a morning session Senator Maybank (D-SC) said the question of whether the bill should run for one or two years was being reopened at the request of the National Security Resources board.
The legislation would arm the
Young Boys Like He-Man Fashions
What kind of school clothes make grammar grade boys happiest?
School boys prefer casual yet mannishly correct clothes in styles similar to those worn by their classmates, say the authorities. They feel decidedly uncomfortable and ill at ease in anything even a little different.
Plenty of warm bright shirts, slacks and a sport jacket or windbreaker are popular with the school lads and practical items too.
When worn with Junior's other trousers and jackets the 1950 addition of shirts, slacks and a jacket stretch his wardrobe economically.
If he's a worshipper of Hopalong Cassidy and other Western heroes be sure to delight his adventurous heart with a generous supply of frontier pants that are sturdy and right for play yet not too informal for classroom hours.
Freshman Day Launches Year At Fullerton J.C.
Freshman day on Tuesday will usher in the 1950-51 school year at Fullerton junior college.
On that day all newcomers to FJC will officially open the year by meeting for an orientation assembly at 9:30 a.m. in the school auditorium, Chapman and Harvard avenues.
Program advisors will then meet with the freshman for group counseling and individual advising. Those who have not previously done so may take English and psychological tests from 12:45 to 3:45 that afternoon.
Actual registration will begin on Wednesday with those who have previously attended any college or junior college. The hours for this, according to registrar Robert C. Rockwell, will be 8-12 and 1-4.
Classes will start at 8 a.m. on Monday, September 11.

danger of red China's becoming involved in the Korean conflict.
3. He could not answer a question as to whether United Nations forces will stop at the 38th Parallel when they take the offensive in Korea.
Mr. Truman said the Formosa question is one for settlement in a Japanese peace treaty to be worked out with the Allied Nations which fought Japan.
Then he said it would not be necessary to keep the 7th Fleet guarding Formosa once peace is restored to Korea. He said its dispatch to that zone was a flanking operation to protect our forces in Korea.
New Orleans—The freakish Gulf hurricane that swept inland last night near Mobile, Ala., appeared to have delivered its heaviest punch at Panama City, Fla.
No loss of life was reported, and the storm apparently caused little damage elsewhere.
Mayor Carl Gray of the coastal resort in extreme northwest Florida said in a radio broadcast a dock was destroyed by high winds and tides. Several other docks and beach property were damaged. He said 3500 persons were evacuated from low ground to Red Cross shelters.

McLain Considers Court Reversal as Total Vindication
Reversal of the Superior Court decision holding George McLain in contempt of the Senate Interim Social Welfare Committee was viewed today by the pension advocate as his final and complete vindication.
“This decision, following on the heels of the one given by the Sacramento appellate court, has given me and the cause I represent complete vindication from the charges of those who have disagreed with me for political reasons.”
McLain referred to last week’s action by the Third District Court of Appeals in Sacramento which issued a writ prohibiting his trial in Sacramento Superior Court of charges he bribed Assemblyman John Evans of Los Angeles.
The first drum cylinder press was installed in the offices of the London News in 1813.

Army photographer Ray Turnbull of Miami Beach, Fla., reported the road reopened. He accompanied American tanks and infantrymen north of the port city and returned to Taegu, main Allied bastion west of Pohang later in the day.
Earlier, U. S. tanks stopped a red drive on Pohang.
The 26,000 attacking North Koreans halted before the 90 mm.guns of Pershing land dreadnaughts a mile and half from the east coast port city.
Added fire from Allied warships and planes beat down the communists in the most bitter battle of the war.
A thousand or more North Koreans were killed or wounded in eight hours in a desperate red effort to grab mere inches of the wrecked outskirts of the Sea of Japan port city.
The Air Force alone claimed 1200 reds killed in two days.
Reckless spending of men's lives moved the communists within three miles of the city. But they were far behind schedule—to kick United Nations troops clear out of Korea by the target time of midnight.
Jacket a Must For Casualness
A college man easily acquires that admired "understated look" when he builds a casual wardrobe based on one good sports jacket.
Select either a monotone ground plaid or a tweed with an overtone of one strong "lift" color. Perhaps a tan-brown plaid with shadowy frames of rust, or a lead grey tweed peppered with cat's eye green nubs.
Select trousers either a few shades lighter than the background color, or in the lift color if it isn't too bright.
Unite the parts with a sleeveless cashmere slipover in the lift color over a tattersall checked shirt featuring one of your key colors. Add units thoughtfully with your color theme in mind.

The plane left Cairo for Rome at 1:30 a.m., local time, today (4:30 p.m., yesterday, PDT). It was last heard from at 1:57 a.m. First indication that it had crashed came when it was reported overdue at Rome five hours later. An air search began immediately, and a TWA plane located the wreckage 22 miles southwest of Tanta, between Cairo and Alexandria, the line reported.
Investigators were dispatched to the scene at once, by the airline and the civil aviation department. The Civil Aeronautics Bureau in Washington also dispatched two investigators to the scene.
The loss of 55 lives would make the crash one of the most disastrous in world commercial aviation history. The heaviest toll in American commercial aviation was exacted last June 24, when 58 persons died in a Northwest Airlines crash in Lake Michigan. The heaviest toll in commercial airline history was March 12 this year, when 80 persons died in the crash of a British Transport near Cardiff, Wales.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis McBratney, 7861 First st., are in Chula Vista, to attend the funeral of an old friend, Mrs. Elmer Swanson, who was 73 years old. They will return sometime today.
