Roaring Rainbows Fall in Tourney; Play in Consolation Round Today
It must be a bad habit that they've formed, but the Roaring Rainbows put on one of those last-inning rallies that just fell short again yesterday.
As a result, they failed to catch Hermosa Beach and lost 6-5 to be eliminated from the championship bracket of the Bellflower tournament. They will compete in the consolation bracket tonight at 6.
The Rainbows, however, were blanked from that time fifth put Hermosa Beach ahead when it scored on four walks and an error. What proved to be the deciding run came in in the sixth on a walk and a Hermosa Beach single.
The Rainbows took the lead in the second when they scored three times on singles by Harry Beans and Vern Weaver, a walk, and three passed balls by the Hermosa Beach catcher. Another Beans hit and three walks brought in another Anaheim run in the third.
The Rainbows, however, were blanked from that time until until they put together their just-short rally in the seventh. Danny Fitzpatrick lived on an error and Mickey Flynn walked. After two out, the run came in when Dennis Daniels was safe on the second Hermosa miscue of the inning.
Bill French then powered a long, hard drive to deep left, but the Hermosa left fielder made a running catch of it to end the game.

Stumbling Tigers Lose Six of Last Nine As Yanks Gain Virtual First-Place Tie
Hilts Hold Lead
As Jim Konstanty Hurls 58th Game
By JOE REICHLER
Associated Press Sports Writer
Are the Detroit Tigers finally taking under the persistent pression of one of the most gruelling man battles ever waged?
The answer may come within next few days. Then again, it will not be known until the wandays of the season.
This is certain, however. The Detroit picture was never darker in it is today. At least, not because the Tigers took over the American league lead 82 days ago. True, they are still clinging to top, but by the slimmest marketing to the Senators in Washington, the Tigers once-comfortable and a half game bulge was bottled to two percentage points.
Yanks Win
The hard-pressing New York Jeeps picked up a full game on retiring Tigers by clipping the Cleveland Indians, 6-5, in 10 innings of the first scheduled game in doubleheader. The second tie was postponed after two and half innings because of rain.

PART II: The pro boys.
Actually, when you come right down to it, the professionals are about four times as easy to rate as the college teams. There really are no "unknown" players, for all of them have had some type of experience at some school. (This excludes of course, the "freaks" such as Cleveland's Dante Lavelli who played no college football.)
Personnel changes do not occur so often or so drastically as they do in the college ranks. Who ever heard of a professional team losing eight first-string players in one season?
Four Factors
After a year or so of play, it becomes a relatively easy task to gauge the abilities of the players, and the final analysis for rating the teams simmers down to these vital points:
1. The losses from last season.

PREDICTION NO. 1 FOR 1950 — Eagle vs Hams tonight. Los Angeles has never beaten Philadelphia. See no reason why it should now. Beyerlines picks the Eagles by three points.
Rams, Television To Get Acid Test With Philadelphia
LOS ANGELES (AP)—The Los Angeles Rams get an acid test from the National Football League champs tonight, and so does television.
The Rams collide with the Philadelphia Eagles and the exhibition will be televised.
The two teams battled for the league crown last December.
Until a week ago, the Rams expected the game to attract 45,000 or more fans, but they'll be surprised if 25,000 show up.
The reason: two weeks ago the Rams and the Washington Redskins in a non-televised game attracted 92,000. But last week in a televised encounter attendance dropped to 18,000-plus for the Ram-Chicago Cardinal exhibition.
The Rams have a television contract that guarantees $575,000 for 15 games, nine of them "live games" in California.
Guarantees for each game were not divulged. But the sponsor "lost" money on the Ram-Cardinal game and unless there is an unexpected sale of tickets at the turnstiles, will lose again tonight.
Regardless of the turnout, the game offers exciting possibilities.

No Pitching in Coast League? There Was Plenty Last Night
By the Associated Press
No pitching in the Pacific Coast League? Don't you believe it.
Los Angeles' Cal McLish blanked Hollywood, 4-0, with three hits; San Diego's Jack Kraus shut out Portland, 2-0, on four hits; Big Jim Wilson won his 22nd game as Seattle beat Sacramento, 5-2, and Al Gettel posted No. 16 for Oakland in a three-hit, 9-2 win over San Francisco.
Only Five Bonus Players Pay Off
NEW YORK (AP)—Only a handful of high-priced bonus youngsters have come through for their major league bosses. The others have been expensive disappointments.
Actually, there are only five players who have paid off, and three are pitchers.
A major reason why the Phillies are expected to clinch their first National league flag in 35 years is the one-two pitching punch of bonus kids Curt Simmons ($95,000) and Robin Roberts ($25,000).
Roberts, 23, has been the league's outstanding righthander this season. His smoking fast ball has accounted for 18 victories. He has lost only six times.
Simmons May Go
The lefthanded Simmons, after only a dozen wins in three seasons, has piled up 16 triumphs while losing only eight this year. However, Curt, 21, may leave the Phils shortly for a stint with Uncle Sam's team.
Charley Stobbs, 21-year-old left-
All that chuckling in one night—last night—indicates other flingers may soon follow Sacramento's Max Sorkont to the majors. Wilson, for almost certain; McLish, Gettel and a few others, perhaps, by next season.
16th Victory
McLish found wanting in earlier National league trials, posted his 16th win against eight defeats for the seventh place Angels and his fourth straight over Hollywood. The big Choctaw right-hander looked ready for any competition.
Les Layton, with a homer and two singles, and Clarence Maddern, with a double and two singles, drove in two runs apiece for the Angles. Frankie Baumholtz lost ground in his drive for the .400 batting mark, getting only one single in five trips to slip to .390.
SIMPSON HOMERS
Kraus turned in his season's best and needed only Suitcase Simpson's two-run homer off Red Lynn to breeze home. It was No. 27 for Simpson.
Gettel's performance kept Oakland 5½ games ahead of San Diego. Two unrestricted runs in the

The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates won the National League penchant by Roberts, has been the league's outstanding righthander this season.
Charley Stobbs, 21-year-old left-hander of the Boston Red Sox, is the other bonus pitcher who has delivered. The six-foot southpaw has bolstered the wobbly Sox staff with nine victories this season.
Indians Have Two
The Cleveland Indians possess the other two prominent bonus bables—Senor Roberto Francisco Avila of Vera Cruz, Mexico, and luscious Luke Easter of St. Louis. But Luke is hardly a baby—he's six-foot-five and there's 240 pounds of him.
Avila's red-hot bat and steady play afield have pushed veteran Joe Gordon off second base. Yesterday, Mexican Bob pulled a leg muscle and will be sidelined for several days. The pennant-contending tribe will miss his .333 batting average.
Easter, one of the majors' most heralded players in the last few years, has bludgeoned American league pitching for 22 home runs this season.
Big Flops
Pitcher John Antonelli ($70,000 of the Boston Braves and catcher Frank House ($75,000) of Detroit have been the biggest letdowns so far. Antonelli has won only four big league games in three seasons, while House, the most costly of all bonus players, has seen almost no action with the Tigers.
Last January there were 35 bonus players listed on major league rosters. There are only 19 left.
Davis Likened To Armstrong
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Could another Henry Armstrong be coming out of California?
Fistic experts today were reaching back to the days of Hammerin' Henry; the triple-crown winner, for comparisons with 23-year-old John L. Davis. The Oakland negro last night took the state lightweight title by slamming rugged Carlos Chavez from post to post.
The Oakland slugger unleashed every blow in the book with either fist to annex his second California title. He defeated Irwin Steen for singles drove in two runs apiece for the Angeles. Franklin Baumholtz lost ground in his drive for the .400 batting mark getting only one single in five trips to slip to .390.
SIMPSON HOMERS
Kraus turned in his season's best and needed only Suitcase Simpson's two-run homer off Red Lynn to breeze home. It was No. 27 for Simpson.
Gettel's performance kept Oakland $5½ games ahead of San Diego. Two unearned runs in the ninth kept him from a shutout. He has lost only six games. Bobby Hofman continued his hitting streak, bagging a homier and two doubles.
Wilson's 22nd win was not one of his best. The Seattle tice was reached for 10 hits in $7½ innings and needed relief from Jim Davis and Hector Brown. Walt McCoy, new Negro acquisition, lost his first start for Sacramento.
1952 Olympics May Be World-Wide
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)—Indications are that the 1952 Olympics at Helsinki will be a truly world-wide affair with Russia Germany and Japan participating.
The six-member executive committee voted unanimously yesterday to re-admit Germany and Japan. And, over the weekend Soviet athletes won the team title in the European track championships while competing for the first time since 1948.
These facts make it appear that barring the unforeseen, the three nations will be among the many in the Olympics at Helsinki in 1952.
The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates won the National League pennant by a 27½ game margin over the Brooklyn Dodgers, a record.
