Los Angeles C of C Commences Survey of Southland Fabrication
Procurement officers of all the Armed Forces as well as procurement officials of general government agencies will be supplied with complete information on the Southland metal fabrication potential when the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce completes a survey of 4000 machine shops started yesterday.
The survey is being made by means of questionnaires mailed to machine shop operators. Findings of the completed survey will be placed in the hands of all private business and government procurement officers in California and, on a selective basis, to official and unofficial purchasing agents—such as those in the Pentagon and at Wright Field—nationally.
About two weeks will be allowed for filing of returns before final results will be tabulated.
"In cognizance of the fact that every prime contractor will have to seek firms to which he may let subcontracts, the main task before us is to acquaint potential buyers with what metal products we in Southern California can fabricate and in what quantities we can put forth products," Frank N. Rush, chairman of the Chamber's industrial development committee, declared.
"It is obvious that the metal working industry is one of the most important in the mobilization effort since it is virtually impossible to name one piece of military equipment that does not have metal working parts.
"The purpose of this survey is twofold: First of all, its results acquaint the potential buyer with what local machine shop operators have to offer, and second, it presents an opportunity for metal fabricators to assure themselves that information regarding their production capabilities are placed in the hands of persons who have quotas to fill." Rush concluded.
Shaughnessy Sues Rams for 30 G's
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Los Angeles Ram coach Clark Shaughnessy wants $33,157.91 from the National football league.
He filed a Superior Court suit yesterday, charging the three-year contract from which he was fired last February carried a provision that the club had to pay him $30,000—equivalent to two years' salary. The other $3,157.91, he contends is due him on his 1949-50 salary.
Shaughnessy got the gate after directing the Rams to the NFL's Western division title last year, but losing the championship play-off to the Philadelphia Eagles. He was replaced by Joe Stydahar.

Louis Taylor opened the speech-making with a talk on "Should We Arm Our Allied Nations?" Earl Smith followed him with "Should the State Department Clear All Speeches and Discussions on the Aims of Our Government Before They Are Presented?" Royal O. Marten asked "Do You Think That the Government Discusses the Problems With the Nation Freely?"
After these Victor Heuber presented "Does a Person Ever Get Too Old to Change His Career?" Following Heuber's talk there was a round table discussion on the first three topics.
Officials were Robert H. Allen, teastmaster of the evening; R. J. Allen, general evaluator; and Page Vincent, timekeeper.

Nurserymen Say
By Orange County Nurserymen's Asso.
The anemones and ranunculus are corms and differ from the true bulbs such as tulips or daffodils. A corm is a hard solid object having neither leaves nor scales. It is good gardening practice to soak the corms in water for several hours before planting as this will make the sprouts appear faster. Depending on the size of the corm and the texture of the soil, the corms should be set about 2 inches deep.
The anemone and ranunculus not only thrive under the same growing conditions, but their appearance is almost identical. Both varieties belong to the ranunculaceae family, better known as the crowfoot or buttercup family.
The anemone is native to the Mediterranean region, while the ranunculus originated in Southeastern Europe. Plant both varieties in the same bed, they like a rich, loamy soil and some shade will help during hot weather. You can build up old or worn out soil by adding large quantities of humus. These plants like a neutral soil so care should be taken not to build up an acid reaction.
Stock Market
By RADER WINGET
NEW YORK, UP — Buying strength faded away in the Stock Market today and let prices fall back from an early advance.
Trading was active as the market pressed forward but dwindled as the price retreat progressed. Total volume for the day was at the rate of 1,400,000 shares.
Steels and motors led the ad-some others joining in. The carriers held most of their gains, however, when most of the remainder of the list eased down from their tops.
There was a great deal of selective strength such as Nickel Plate, up nearly seven points at one time.
Another outstanding issue was American Woolen. It pushed up around two points at times. Higher prices for fabrics are being predicted based on the zooming quotations coming out of the newly opened Australian wool auctions.
The Siriono Indians of Bolivia are known as "the nomads of the long how."
