ONCE UPON A TIME — Ben Frasher pumped most of the gasoline sold in ANAHEIM. Remember the little Standard Station under the pepper tree at Broadway and Lemon... That is where the late Kermit Palmer peddled a lot of gas, too. That ANAHEIMER was on the verge of blossoming out as a cartoonist when the Master Painter beckoned... Incidentally, Palmer was quite a go getter. He used to call on all of the leading artists in Southern California. George Herrimann, the creator of the imortal Krazy Kat, owned an orange grove at Yorba Linda where the Palmer family had extensive citrus and oil holdings. So did George Parmenter, one of William Randolph Hearst's art directors... Palmer's favorite artists was Vie Forsythe, the painter of desert scenes, who drew a comic strip, Joe Jinks, by name, for the Old New York World syndicate. Forsythe was born in Orange... Ted Cook was another one of Palmer's Laguna Beach friends. The columnist's youngster used to hang around the station... George McMenue and Charlie Plumb used to give him advice... Robert VanDyke’s beef heifer was awarded the grand championship trophy, edging out prize winning animals from all divisions. Carroll Coykendall’s heifer was runner-up in overall competition, winning the Reserve Grand Championship. In preliminary judging, VanDyke’s champion had placed first in the medium weight class (850 to 1050 lbs.) among 16 animals showed. VanDyke won three first ribbons and Charles Holland won one. In lightweight competition, heifers belonging to Coykendall and Charles Holland each won blue ribbons. George Mitobe’s animal placed second. Commenting on Anaheim’s sweepstakes whiner, Judge Charles Perrin said, “I never laid hands on an animal that had a more mellow finish than Van Dyke’s champion heifer.” He added that “the reserve grand champion is an exceptional beef type that I like to see FFA members buy.” Van Dyke purchased his heifer from the Rolling Ridge Hereford ranch and Corkendall through the Farmers County Fair. (Continued from Page 1) prizes and ribbons will be awarded for largest and smallest prize best trained and the most uniquely-costumed. Palmer's favorite artists was Vic Forsythe, the painter of desert scenes, who drew a comic strip, Joe Jinks, by name, for the Old New York World syndicate. Forsythe was born in Orange... Ted Cook was another one of Palmer's Laguna Beach friends. The columnist's youngster used to hang around the station... George McManus and Charlie Plumb used to give him advice... "A really great man will go out of his way to help a struggling nobody," he always said. "They don't fear competition like a lot of little chiselers do." PROFILES — Mrs. Barbara Walker, ANAHEIM high school home economics instructor, wins todays accolade. In teaching ANAHEIM youth the important problems of home economics, Mrs. Walker is doing an outstanding public service by preparing the youth of today meet tomorrow's problems. PICKUPS—Emillo Martines of ANAHEIM is working to make La Habra's Mexican Independence Day celebration a huge success. Hortensia Rivas another ANAHEIM is a candidate for the queen of the Fiestas Patrias... In times like these it's reassuring to know that there are righteous God-fearing men like the Rev. Frank Butterworth to guide ANAHEIMERS in the course of everyday life... Howard and Betty Clark may not know all the answers, but they are wise and understanding. Common sense often solves the most difficult problems. No wonder people ask them for advice... Ted Neja has gotten up in the world since he left the highway patrol, Naturally, any pilot does... Bob Drysdale, one time, Anaheim lineman, is now up at Ventura. A high voltage line shortcircuited his baseball career 15 years ago on a pole south of ANAHEIM... Art Michel really has a difficult job trying to find a suitable location for a church. Wisely enough, with the wisdom of a Solomon a committee of seven to do the job... Few concerns have built up such an enviable reputation as the Alex Tamale factory. But anything a Morales does is done to perfection... REMINDER—The outfall sewer bond election will be presented to the voters in a month. It is Charles Holland each won blue ribbons, George Mitobels animal placed second. Commenting on Anahiem's sweepstakes winner, Judge Charles Perrin said, "I never laid hands on an animal that had a more mellow finish than Van Dyke's champion heifer." Van Dyke purchased his heifer from the Rolling Ridge Hereford ranch and Coykendall through the Farmers Insurance group. Feeder calves shown by James Cuthbert and Coykendall also received second place ribbons. All of the championship animals will be on display until tomorrow morning when winners go on the worthy of your consideration. growing community. SIDELINES—In the short time that he was with the GAZETTE, Jim Lamhofer learned that it pays to advertise—especially if the advertising message is placed in the right media. The GAZETTE,atch!... Jim's grandad, J.W.Newell, was an authority on mining. He knew when Mottier Nature advertised a rich mineral deposit and people traveled far and wide for his advice... Speaking of mine owners, Charlie Miller, the retired oilman from Placentia, knows mining. He owns one... Thomas McElhaney once remarked that a lot of miners put more money into mines than they'll ever take out of emm But that sagacious ANAHEIMER of another day was a philosopher who would have been known for his wit and shrewd observations if he'd have taken time to put them on paper... Incidentally, his son, Tom McElhaney, one of the few athletes to play football for both Fullerton and ANAHEIM High schools in the rip-roaring '20's is a Bakerfield oil executive... His brother, John McElhaney, was up in Alaska the last we heard... Jim Talcott is one ANAHEIMER who might have been a big league cartoonist if he'd have followed through with Walt Disney. But the war changed a lot of things. Jim is the kind of a man who'll make a go of anything he tackles...
