Almost-Indian Groth Wrecks Clevelanders
By JOE REICHLER
Associated Press Sports Writer
A difference of $5000 once, kept Johnny Groth from wearing a Cleveland uniform. Today the Indians would pay that sum many times over just to get him out of their hair.
Since joining the Detroit Tigers two years ago, Groth has made a career out of belting Cleveland pitching.
Bob Feller, a teammate of Groth's at Great Lakes during the war, had brought Groth back with him for a tryout. Cleveland bigwigs liked what they saw. Groth was offered a $25,000 contract.
Just as he was about to sign, Groth's father reminded the boy he had previously promised the Detroit club a chance to match any offer. The Tigers offered $30,000 so Groth signed with Detroit.
Groth's grand-slam homer off Bob Lemon was all Art Houtteman needed to gain his 15th victory, 4-1, although he faltered in the seventh when he walked the first two batters to face him. Marlin Salard took over, fled the bases on another pass, then dunned Larry Doby and forced Luke Easter to hit into a double play.
The New York Yankees split a doubleheader with Washington to move two percentage points in front of Cleveland in their race for second place. Washington won the opener, 10-5. The Yankees took the second 9-0.

Anaheim Legion Bounced From Tournament, 11-0
The host's hopes for victory in its own tournament were glimmering last night as Anaheim Legion Post 72 was annihilated by Culver City 11-0 in a time-shortened six-inning contest. In the first game of the evening, Lumberman's Pool 403 advanced to the third round by topping Los Angeles Pool 323 5-1.
Anaheim came reasonably close to scoring in both of the first two innings, loading the bases on both occasions. Three walks filled them with one down in the first inning, but Culver City hurler Jack Slatkin erased the threat with a pair of strikeouts.
Two walks and a hit by Dick Ramella again filled the sacks in the second, but Dop Carter popped out to first to end the last serious Anaheim threat of the evening.
Culver City, meanwhile, had pecked away for single runs in the first, second, and third, and then exploded for seven in the fourth when the Anaheim defense disappeared. Wildness on Ramella's part also helped as he walked four and hit one while his teammates were committing four errors. Culver City also sandwiched in two hits.
Ramella, who was replaced by Don Carter on the mound in the peculiar fourth, allowed six hits and walked five, but he also hit four batters, one in each of the frames in which he worked. Besides Ramella, only catcher Ed Herrera was able to solve the offerings of Slatkin for a hit, punching a single to left in the fourth. Slatkin fanned 10 and walked six.
In the opener, Lumberman's Bob Valenzuela had whiffed 13 in pitching his 5-1 conquest. A pop fly single over short ruined a no-hitter for the swift lefthander. Lu'mans ... 021 200—5 5 1

Keystone Duo Boosts Oakland
The Oakland Acorns, comfortably leading the Pacific Coast League by seven games, can attribute much of their eminence to the keystone combination of shortstop Artie Wilson and second baseman Bobby Hofman.
Probably the slickest midfield duo in the league, the pair also pack plenty of authority at the plate. Last night the veteran Wilson, defending PCL batting champion, poled a triple and a single, while the youthful Hoiman whacked two doubles and a single to pace the Oaks to an 8 to 7 win over San Francisco.
The Acorns needed the win to preserve their margin. Second place San Diego defeated Portland, 6-4, and Hollywood took Los Angeles by 8-4. Sacramento at Seattle was rained out and will be played in a doubleheader tomorrow.
Oakland gilt-edged its victory with a six-run outburst in the fifth, but needed a tally off reliever Al Lien in the eighth to break a 7-7 tie. Forrest Thompson drew the win.
Max West hit his 20th homer and Suitcase Simpson slammed a Charles Showing Lends Hope to Louis Comeback
By MURRAY ROSE
BUFFALO, N.Y., (P) — Joe Louis' stock rose sharply today following Ezzard Charles' one-sided but lacklustre conquest of Freddie Bessore.
A "new" Charles was supposed to be unveiled last night. But it was the same old cautious Ez in action. The NPA heavyweight champion who made good in his third title defense by stopping Bessore in 2:53 of the 14th fralle, certainly wasn't a "Tiger."
But Charles and his managerial brain trust of Jake Mintz and Tom Tannas expressed satisfaction, dull as the performance was.
"He needed the workout," said Mintz as Charles nodded agreement. "It was his first fight in ten months and he wasn't as sharp as he should be. His timing was off. But he'll be ready for the next one, whoever it is."
"Whoever it is" refers to one Joe Louis, who once ruled all of the heavyweights until he went into temporary retirement. Ezzy is recognized only in 47 states of the U.S. New York doesn't list a champion at the moment.
The comebacking Brown Bomber and Charles are tentatively scheduled to have it out in Yankee stadium, Sept. 27. The fight is not yet officially sealed, but it seems a certainty to be held.
Louis already has started preliminary training in West Baden Ind. Charles, who suffered a slight cut over his right eye last night, said he will be ready to
