NAMED AS ENVOY — John E. Peurifoy (above), Deputy Under Secretary of State for Administration, has been nominated by President Truman as Ambassador to Greece. Yanks Meet (Continued from Page 2) meters. Another entry in this event is Shiro Hashizume, fast but less renowned teammate of Furuhashi. Marshall and Furuhashi are scheduled to meet in the 400, 800 and 1500 meter freestyle. The main battle is expected in the "metric mile" grind, top event of the first day's program. Furuhashi holds the world record in all three—4:33.3 in the 400; 9:35.5 in the 800; and 18:19 in the 1500. Looking at the world from high above the North Pole brings into perspective the double ring of airbases open to communist countries and the democratic nations. The polar view is helpful in studying the possibilities of air warfare against Russia. For example, the shortest distance from the big B-36 base near Fairbanks, Alaska, to Moscow is a 4100-mile route almost directly over the pole. Only a polar course would permit approaches at a comfortable distance from the Soviet's ring of important protective airbases. Russia has major airfields along its European border from Murmansk on the Barents Sea southward to Bucharest and Odessa on the Black Sea. Its airfields stretch across the broad plains east of the Urals, looking down over India and China, reach down to southeast Siberia to overlook Japan and on eastward to the tip of Siberia almost within sight of Alaska. Soviet airbases in Georgia and Azerbaijan are close by Turkey and the oil fields of Iran. The several dozen major airfields along the gigantic perimeter give the Russians a protective screen against attack and a wide choice of launching platforms for assault in whatever direction the communist leadership wishes to strike. Even the northern door facing the Arctic wastes has some protection. Sizeable bases at Tiksi, Igarka and Salekhard, supplemented by an unknown number of smaller facilities—all we see the Arctic Circle—offer safe against polar attack. It is obvious that an in-base for warning and defense be maintained with less effort than an offensive base, but it is useful that the problem is solved that Russia has a complete work along the Arctic Circle has an opportunity to develop relatively small airfield bergen, lying within easy reach of the northern partway, Iceland and the east Greenland. Korean bases would cover southern areas of Japan off U.S. bases there from China. Farther east and three major airfields at Uelka and East Cape—separated from Alaska Bering Strait are a possible ace to Alaskan bases and threat to the Pacific Near and the Great Lakes in region. Airbases available to these cratic countries extend much longer arc than Russia and its satellites. Other B-36 bases south—at San Francisco, City, South Dakota, Fort Texas, and perhaps Tampaida—would support the two launching platforms. It is obvious that an interceptor base for warning and defense can be maintained with less effort than an offensive base, but it is doubtful that the problem is so simple that Russia has a complete network along the Arctic Ocean. It has an opportunity to develop the relatively small airfield at Spitzbergen, lying within easy flying reach of the northern part of Norway, Iceland and the east coast of Greenland. Korean bases would cover the southern areas of Japan and cut off U.S. bases there from access to China. Farther east and north, three major airfields at Anadyr, Jelka and East Cape—the last separated from Alaska only by Herring Strait—a possible menace to Alaskan bases and pose a threat to the Pacific Northwest and the Great Lakes industrial region. Airbases available to the democratic countries extend over a much longer arc than those of Russia and its satellites. It is generally recognized that bases of the United States and its probable allies are better developed and able to handle larger aircraft with less interference from weather due both to construction and communications and navigation facilities. Their supply lines appear to be better, although in many cases much longer. Russia has the benefit of internal supply lines. B-36 bases would be of particular importance in a major war. The United States has one on each bank of its continental area—Melson in Alaska and Limestone Maine. Other B-36 bases to the south—at San Francisco, Rapid City, South Dakota, Fort Worth, Texas, and perhaps Tampa, Florida—would support the two great launching platforms. The significance of that double use of bases lies in the problem of handling the giant bomber, which poses nearly 180 tons for takeoff. which might be used against southern and eastern Siberia, China and Manchuria. The availability of Indian bases probably can be assumed from that country's support of United Nations action in Korea. Airfields in Greenland, Iceland and Labrador are Vital not only as warning stations, weather reporting and stepping-stones for transports and short-range warplanes being ferried to Europe, but also because of the threat they would be in Russian hands. Much of the area useable by democratic airpower lies outside the polar view, to the south of the Soviet land mass. It is no less important than that in the northern third of the hemisphere. The Strategic Air Command, America's global striking force, recently has taken over Ramey airbase in Puerto Rico. Presumably it is a staging point for a South Atlantic route to Africa and the Middle East, where bases are being kept in useable condition through Military Air Transport Service operations. Bases such as Wheelus in Tripoli and Dhahran in Saudi Arabia are used as rendezvous points for B-29 and B-50 squadrons flying practice missions out of British bases and for long range escort fighters accompanying them from Germany. Dhahran is the key base in the entire air defense plan for the vital middle eastern area, important both for its oil and as a link for world-wide strategic communications. WHITE Gazette Home Economist What shall we feed our families this week? The thoughtful home-maker is giving this question special attention right now and watching the markets closely. Friday and Saturday are the best days to visit Anaheim food stores if you are going to buy food for the whole week. At that time you can take advantage of the specials advertised for the week-end. Since Friday and Saturday are Dollar Days in Anaheim, one trip to town will take care of all your buying needs. August menus are planned around fresh fruits and vegetables which are so plentiful. The local crop of tomatoes is coming to town and there are dozens of ways using this luscious fruit. Although it is grown in vegetable garden and served as a vegetable, it is classed as a fruit and runs a good second to citrus fruits in its vitamin C content. When serving tomato juice in place of citrus juice, make your servings twice as large to get the same amount of vitamins. Peaches are about as plentiful now as they will be all summer. Some crop failures have been reported and so the quantities are less than in other years. Hale's are appearing—good news for those Bacon may also be baked. To do this place strips on a rack in a shallow baking pan with edges overlapping. Bake about 12 to 15 minutes at 425 degrees. No turning is necessary. This method is especially good when cooking for a crowd because you can put a whole pound in the oven just as it comes from the package without bothering to separate it. For a tasty supper dish using bacon or for hearty party refreshments, try this: BACON TOMATO BURGERS 8 strips bacon 3 thick slices of tomato cheddar cheese salt 4 hamburger buns, cut in half Place tomato slices on top of buttered bun halves. Season with salt. Grate cheese and sprinkle over tomatoes. Place under broiler until cheese is melted and buns are toasted. Cut strips of bacon in half and fry until crisp. Place two half strips of bacon on top of each open faced sandwich. William H. Parker, a member of the Los Angeles police force for 27 years, is the city's new chief of police.
