R Suggests
ing of Fall
as Soon
A good month to plant
season vegetables, reHolland, Orange Counvisor.
Uses that home gardenheir ground for plantthoroughly watering
the area to be planted. A good
practice is to then broadcast about
2 to 3 cubic feet of poultry or
rabbit manure for every 100
square foot area and then then
under by plowing or spading. The
ground should then be well leveled before planting so that irrigations can easily be made on the
crops. Furrows should usually be
made, and plants or seeds placed
within 2 or 3 inches of the fur-
row edges. This makes it easy
for the soil to be moistened around
the seeds or plants by running
water slowly down the furrows for
2 or 3 hours.
In addition to planting cool seasson vegetables such as beets, carrots, cabbage and broccoli, it is
still possible, Holland says, to
plant some warm season crops
such as sweet corn, snap beans,
and summer squash. He reports
that more detailed information on soil management and hortgardening can be obtained free
charge from the University
California Agricultural ExtensiService office at 1104 West EighStreet in Santa Ana.

DENY RENT GOUGES
LOS ANGELES (P)—The Small Property Owners league denies that rents have advance 20 to 300 per cent in Los Angeles county.
Area Rent Director Ben C. Koepke previously announced he had received complaints from tenants that their rents have been hiked astronomically.
The league said it has established a decontrol rent referral committee to investigate tenants complaints.
LOS ANGELES (P)—A tenants group has started a recall petition against Councilmen Don A. Allen and Ed J. Davenport, leaders of the rent decontrol action approved last week by the City Council. The group, headed by labor leaders, indicated petitions will be circulated within 48 hours.
