Our good cook of the week is Mrs. Mary Summers who lives at 1648 East Center st. Mary has sent in her recipe for Swedish meat balls from her big file of meat recipes. This is what she has to say about it:
"I have enjoyed this recipe very much. It seems we never have too many recipes for ground meat, especially now when our meat prices are so high."
Mary knows a great deal about cookery for her husband is H. W. Summers, a butcher at the west end Alpha Beta Market. The Summers family, which includes 14 year old DeLos Summers, has just returned from a three weeks vacation trip through the redwood country. They took with them a tear drop trailer and camped along the Eel River at Richardson's Grove near Garberville.
The Summers returned well tanned from a leisurely vacation near the water and very enthusiastic about the part of the country they visited.
This is Mary Summer's recipe:
SWEDISH MEAT BALLS
Ask your butcher to grind very fine:
1 lb. beef
½ lb. veal
½ lb. side pork
The other ingredients are:
1 cup cream (or evaporated milk)
2 eggs
6 slices fresh white bread
3 tablespoons fat
2 tablespoons chopped onion
1 can mushroom soup
Salt and pepper to taste
Fry the onion in the fat. (Mary uses butter.) Beat eggs, add the cream and pour over bread and let soak. Mix all the other ingredients together except the mushroom soup. Make into small bite-size meat balls and fry until brown. Pour mushroom soup over the meat balls and simmer for one hour.

"WORTH-WHILE WORK"
Domestic Woman Underestimates Importance of Her Job
Dear Miss Dix: What can a woman do when she has reached the age of 40 and realizes that she is not interesting, charming or well educated? I have seven children, but with all of them in school I still have leisure time in which to improve my mind or do something worth while, something better than running my house and taking care of my husband and children. I go to church, sew and help there. I run a charity affair one day a week. Play bridge sometimes. But I feel that there are so many interesting things to do in this world and I hate to have lived and not enjoyed any of them.
