Baker Homers Twice as C of C Downs Baptists
Ed Baker bashed a pair of home runs last night, one clear over the left field fence, as the league-leading Church of Christ softballers posted a 9-4 victory over a Calvary Baptist nine on the City Park diamond.
Second spot Grace Lutherans kept their feet in the Church loop door as they handed Bethel Baptist an 8-1 set-back behind the five hit pitching of Art Altheide.
Church of Christ accomplished last night's victory with relative ease. Baker's biggest blast aided in the markup of four runs in the first inning. Carlin Coffman; Al Mills and Ev. MacDonald had singled prior to the fence buster.
One more came home in the fourth on a single by Dale Moist, an error and a single by Don Dickenson.
Baker homered again in the fifth to make for two more runs.
Church of Christ scoring climaxed in the sixth as a single by Al Mills and two Baptist errors brought two more runs.
Calvary Baptists scored all four of their runs in the sixth on a walk, singles by Roger Acton, Bob Kevorkian, August Jungkeit and a double by Bill Koch.
Grace Lutheran drew blood once in the first frame via the walk-error route. Next inning they notched two as Art Michel knocked a homer. The final five
Stars Look to Lindell as Pennant Hope

The Hollywood Stars are looking toward big John Lindell as what they need to beat their way back as Pacific Coast League pennant contenders.
Whether Lindell, ex-New York Yankee outfielder, can produce the necessary power is a matter of conjecture.
Even if he does produce in the Coast League, his appearance may be too late to help. The Twinks trail Oakland by 8½ games today, and acquiring Lindell may be tantamount to buying the horse after the barn has burned down.

Bethel Baptists' lone run, abetted by Ted Wedell's single, occurred in the seventh. The Baptists saturated the sacks with none down at one point in the final frame but two whiffed and a third flied out to end the threat.

Lynx; Lionettes Vie in Shrine Benefit Game
Fund for the newly-launched Shrine hospital in Los Angeles figures to get a healthy boost a week from this Thursday when the Orange County Shrine Club sponsors a match between the Orange Lionettes and the Buena Park Lynx in the Orange City Park. All proceeds from the benefit encounter go to the Crippled Children's Hospital fund.
In addition to the ball game, those in attendance will see a special entertainment feature staged by the Orange Majorettes and as though this weren't enough for an evening, a performance by the highly-praised Al Malaikah Million Dollar band. Potentate Virgil "Fuzzy" Frizzell will be among the honor corps gracing the event.
Admission to the ball field on the thirteenth of August will be $1 per person. Tickets are available now at Bob Williams Sporting Goods Store or they can be obtained from any member of the Orange County back as Pacific Coast League pen-nant contenders.
Whether Lindell, ex-New York Yankee outfielder, can produce the necessary power is a matter of conjecture.
Even if he does produce in the Coast League, his appearance may be too late to help. The Twinks trail Oakland by8% games today, and acquiring Lindell may be tantamount to buying the horse after the barn has burned down.
Lindell joins the Stars tonight for an eight game series at Seattle.
The Rainiers gained an even split in their ten-game battle with Oakland by whipping the Oaks,5-1 last night.
Lefty-Jim Davis displayed winning form in cheating the Acorns. Seattle collected10 hits, most of them in the first and third innings; Oakland had eight. It was the only game of the evening.
Hollywood fared miserably against lowly Portland last week, and tonight the Oaks move into Vaughn street to start an eight game series against the suddenly devastating Beavers.
Wrigley Field at Los Angeles will probably be the loneliest park in the league this week as the seventh place Angels entertain the last place Sacramento Solons. San Diego invades San Francisco to defend third place against the climbing Seals.

Sunset League Claims TV Drops
(By The Associated Press)
The Sunset League has protested televising of Pacific Coast League games, charging that attendance at Riverside and San Bernardino is off at least 50 percent on nights Hollywood or Los Angeles games are videoed.
Sunset President Les Powers, in a letter to PCL prexy Clarence Rowland, suggested yesterday that the smaller league receive a cut of telecast revenues equal to 1000 people per night when Riverside and San Bernardino play at home.
"It is impossible for a Class C league to charge admittance at the gate and still compete with a Triple A league in the front room parlor for no admission," Powers said.
The Sunset, like all minors, has been having its troubles at the gate this season. A two-team race hasn't helped much either, with the other six clubs lagging far behind.
COLISEUM RECEIVES GREEK MOMENTO
LOS ANGELES (P)—From far off Greece, a stone memento from the first Olympic stadium in the world will be turned over to the Los Angeles memorial coliseum during ceremonies this afternoon.
The stone will be mounted along with one previously received from Rome on pedestals at the main arch under the Olympic torch.
Yanks, Tigers Clash Tonight For American League Top
By JOE REICHLER
Associated Press Sports Writer
First place is the prize tonight as the rising New York Yankees and the slumping Detroit Tigers clash in the first of a "crucial" three game series.
A capacity crowd of 55,000 is expected at Briggs Stadium to watch the mound duel between southpaw Tommy Byrne of the Yankees and righthander Art Houtteman of the Tigers.
Draft Cools Grid Prospects For Trojans
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Football prospects at the University of Southern California took on a World War II color today, with 25 squad members classified in 1-A.
Head Coach Jeff Cravath checked his roster in an effort to learn who will be around when school starts Sept. 18. He didn't like what he found.
His three quarterbacks, Wilbur Robertson, Frank Gifford and Ed Demirjian are draft eligibles. His first line halfback, Pat Duff, is in the Army Air ROTC reserve.
Yesterday Cravath lost one of his foremost linemen outright.
A Yankee victory would put Casey Stengel's men back at the top of the American League for the first time since June 9. It was on that day that the Tigers wrested the lead from New York. They have kept it for 51 days despite some trying times.
Manager Stengel, confident of victory, is leading with his most effective pitcher against the Tigers in an effort to get the jump. Byrne has beaten the Bengals four times without a defeat this season and holds a lifetime 12-3 mark against them.
Houtteman, steadiest Tiger hurler, has a 3-2 mark against New York for the year. His lifetime mark is 8-5.
There were no games in the American League yesterday but the National League picture changed somewhat when the Boston Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, and the Chicago Cubs whipped the Brooklyn Pity Charles, Not Louis, Says Manager
PITTSBURGH (UP) — Check those tears of pity for "Poor Old Joe Louis," fight-fans. Jake Mintz says you've got it all wrong.
Jabbering Jake—the excitable ex-dancer who handles the affairs of NBA—heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles—wants a little sympathy for his boy, who's due to face the former fight king in the fall.
"The way everybody talks you'd think Louis will have a tougher time fighting his condition than fighting Charles," sputtered Jake.
"In fact," Mintz went on. It's the other way around. Ezzard's got a lot tougher training problem than Louis."
"Louis never really retired. And everybody in the fight game knows it. How can you call knockouts in scheduled 10-round bouts' exhibitions?"
"Look what Louis did to Pat Valentino. He kayped him in the eighth—the same round Charles did in a legitimate title fight—but he gave him a worse lacing, and with 10-ounce gloves.
"He boxed nearly every day in that exhibition tour," then he went to South America where he did the same thing. He came home, joined a circus and fought, sometimes twice a day."

Yesterday Cravath lost one of his foremost linemen outright. Walt Asheraft, 240 tackle, reported for active duty with the Marines.
The Trojans had one consolation though. Bill Jessup, an end, got as far as Terminal Island enroute to the Marine barracks at Camp Pendleton when his discharge papers came through.
On the 1950 squad are 10 war veterans, five married men and two 4-Fs. Volney Peters, first string left tackle, also is in the Marine Reserves.
Across town at UCLA, Coach Henry (Red) Sanders is counting noses, too. Only two of his players are past the 25 year age mark. Sanders said he has received no word on draft classifications, however. He figured his boys would let him know when they got their "greetings." Seven of the Bruin squadmen are married.

There were no games in the American League yesterday but the National League picture changed somewhat when the Boston Braves defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3, and the Chicago Cubs whipped the Brooklyn Doggers, 8-5.
Walker Cooper's single off Tommy Glaviano's glove in the last of the ninth drove in Earl Torgeson with the run that gave Boston the victory and moved the Braves into second place past the Cardinals, the Braves now trail the pace-setting Philadelphia Phils by three games. The Cards are three and a half games behind and the fourth place Dodgers lag by four and a half.
Warren Spahn went the route for his 13th victory. He gave up six hits and fanned four to increase his league leading strike-out total to 132. Max Lanier was the loser.
The Cubs overcame a 5-1 deficit. They tallied three times in the sixth to kayo starter Dan Bankhead. Two straight hits finished Chris Van Cuyk in the seventh. Rex Barney relieved, gave up three bases on balls and uncorked a wild pitch to set up a four-run inning for Chicago. That was the game.
Frank (Dutch) Hiller, who needed help in the seventh, won his fifth game, three over Brooklyn. Van Cuyk was the loser.
