Pinky Woods Joins Ranks Of Injured Hollywoodmen
BY JIM HUBBART
Associated Press Sports Writer
Lame and sore, pitcher Pinky Woods was en route home today to watch his Hollywood Stars finish the Pacific Coast League pennant race without him.
The loss of Woods, a 23-game winner last season, wrote another chapter of a Hollywood tragedy in which most of the principal characters have been disposed of already. The Stars not only are losing ball games; they also are losing their players.
After being shelved since June 9, the large eight hander pitched relief Sunday and promptly aggravated his thigh injury. Manager Fred Haney announced from Portland yesterday that Woods was through.
Then the Stars lost their fourth straight to the Portland Beavers, 5 to 3.
The setback left the Hollywoods 6½ games behind Oakland. The Oaks were rained out last flight at Seattle.
The Beavers scored all their runs in the first three innings. They were outhit, 11 to 5, but the twlnks never could put enough hits together.
Elsewhere, San Francisco and Sacramento divided a doubleheader and San Diego handed Los Angeles its fifth loss in a row, 5 to 3.
The Seals won the second game of their twi-night twin bill by 5 to 4 when reliefer Al Lien struck out Ralph Hodgin to halt a Sacramento rally in the ninth. The Solons iced the seven inning opener, 3 to 2, on Jim Busby's squeeze bunt in the fifth.
Bumbling by the battery cost the Angeles their game with the Padres. Catcher Ray Cash committed one of two Seraph errors in a first inning that produced three San Diego counters, while a walk, wild pitch and a balk contributed to another in the second. Hal Saltzman had a shutout until Les Layton's pinch double in the seventh chased in the first Angel run in 19 innings.
SANTA MARIANS HOST SEMIPRO TITLE MIX

Santa Maria won the southern division crown by defeating San Luis Obispo, 12-1, last night on Les Webber's five-hit pitching.
Simmons Protected the 1½ game lead over the St. Cardinals with a 13-3 decision the Chicago Cubs yesterday allowed seven hits, including homer by Andy Pafko, fanning and walked five.
Del Ehnis ruined the Cubing in seven runs with a do-or-die seventh and a homer eighth, each with the bases.
St. Louis stuck close to with a rosing 13-3 rom Brooklyn. The Cards broke game wide open after it hailed 1-1 through the first six Enos Slaughter and Chucking each hit two homers and Rice hit one but Stan Musial game batting streak was Musial went hitless in five.

Simmons Loss Puts Phil Whiz Kids to Real Test
By JACK HAND
(Associated Press Sports Writer)
Temporary loss of Curt Simmons, top National Leagueatcher with 14 wins, puts the Phillie whiz kids to the real test. Eddie Sawyer's staff must take up the slack for two weeks until the $65,000 bonus baby returns from a National Guard camp.
This is the third mid-summer camp trip for Simmons. In other years it didn't matter. He was just another wild youngster with a slingshot arm. Now he's fifth man in the league. When he leaves tomorrow, there will be a big hole in the Phil defense.
Protects Lead
Simmons protected the Phils' game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals with a 13-3 decision over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Curt Bowed seven hits, including aomer by Andy Pafko, fanned five and walked five.
Del Ehnis ruined the Cubs, driving in seven runs with a double in the seventh and a homer in the ninth, each with the bases loaded. St. Louis stuck close to the Phils with a roaring 13-3 romp over Brooklyn. The Cards broke the same wide open after it had gone through the first six innings. Los Slaughter and Chuck Diering each hit two homers and Del Ehnis hit one but Stan Musial's 30-time batting streak was ended. Casual went hitless in five trips.
Murphy Rates Fight Edge At Hollywood
HOLLYWOOD (IP)—Irish Bob Murphy of San Diego rates as a slight favorite to retain his California state lightheavyweight title tonight in a 12-round rematch with Dave Whitlock of San Francisco at the Hollywood Legion stadium.
The two put on a bristling bout a month ago, with Murphy the winner in a controversial windup in the 10th round.
The ex-sailor from San Diego, ahead at the time, charged Whitlock into the ropes and the latter wound up on the apron of the ring. He was unable to continue and Murphy was credited with a

It was strictly an exchange of baseline shots, with Mrs. Rurac outlasting the comely Nancy.

ON THE LAM with Jim Lamhofer
Spinning the sports sphere... it's been a long, long time since the four first division clubs in each major league have been in as solid pennant contention at the last of July as are the Tigers, Yanks, Indians, and Bosox in the American loop and the Phils, Cards, Dodgers, and Braves in the senior circuit this year... No more than five games have separated the fourth and first place clubs in either league in recent weeks.
The Peps are making a runaway of the Anaheim Open Basketball league race this summer. They have yet to be beaten with play already into the second and last round... the other night they were minus three of their main-stays — Hugh Faulkner, Jerry Schmitz, and Kenny Knapp, but they still managed to whip the Fullerton '46ers... this was no small task since the '46er talent included Bill Warren, first-string guard for Stanford and the man who held Bill-the-Basketmaker Stairman to seven points once last winter; Dan Kraemer, a regular for Santa Clara until a bad back sideline him last December; Don Optimists meet Newport
