Optimists Take Brea 7-4 Style Playing a delayed action sort of game, Anaheim Optimist horsehiders came from behind last night to beat Brea Optimists 7-4 at La Palma Park. Trailing by two runs, the locals started off their scoring with one in the fourth, then gained momentum with three each in the fifth and sixth to capture the contest. The Breans loaded the bases in the sixth, but Gil Martinez still bothered by an ailing arm; stepped in and squelched the threat, allowing only one run to cross the plate. Lloyd Trapp bashed the ball most last night, collecting three hits for four times at bat: Willard Weyand got a pair. Earlier in the week the league leaders downed the same opponents 1-0. In the evening's initial game, Bethel Baptist bested winless Evangelical's eight straight loss against no victories. Lloyd Lichtenwalter hurled the Church of Christ men to their win last night, giving up only three hits. Big bash of the evening was Carlin Coffman's final frame homer, followed shortly thereafter by Don Dickenson's triple. Bethel Baptists had to hang on for dear life to notch their win as the Evangelicals loaded the sacks in the top of the seventh. Howard Musch, Herbel and Pannier were all poised for homeward dashes at the crucial point but George Winand, who had earlier doubled, went down swinging to end the threat. WILLIAMS AIMS AT SEPTEMBER RETURN BOSTON (P) Ted Williams, operated on only a week ago for a fracture in the left elbow, held high hopes today of returning to the Red Sox lineup by the first week in September. "I think I have good movement in the arm and be able to play in six weeks," the $125,000-a-year slugger said yesterday as he left Santa Maria hospital with his elbow in a sling. Sewell Draws Hat Tips For Redhot Red Revival By JAUK HAND Associated Press Sports Writer Shades of 1914. Can Luke Sewell perform a miracle at Cincinnati? You have to stretch a point to call seventh-place Cincinnati, 11½ games out of first, a pennant factor. But you can tip your hat to Sewell for the Red revival. The man who led the St. Louis Browns to their only pennant doesn't quit. Irish Noor Bids Coast Farewell INGLEWOOD, Calif., UP—Noor, the Irish horse who just 10 months ago started a phenomenal racing career in California, bids farewell to the Golden State tomorrow at Hollywood Park. The dark streak from abroad goes postward in the mile and one quarter $50,000 American Handicap, windup stake on Hollywood's summer meeting. He faces two formidable obstacles in his good-bye to California race fans. One is a stubborn little gray fighter from the Argentine, Miche, and the other is a topheavy impost of 132 pounds, the most he's ever been asked to carry. There'll be a couple of other challengers in the field, maybe four—the Silver Creek ranch's Dharan, Frank Franklin's Frankly, and possibly Clifford Moors' Old Rockport, or E. O. Stice's On Trust. Noor, racing under the silks of the late Charles S. Howard and once again ridden by veteran Johnny Longden, spots Miche 20 pounds. Last by 17 lengths: June 24, the Reds may not qualify for the 1950 miracle team but they sure are the Dodger-killers. If Branch Rickey muffs the pennant, he can blame Cincy. The sizzling Reds polished off the ambitious Brooks last night in both ends of a twilight-night doubleheader, 3-1 and 6-2. That made it eight out of 11 over the Dodgers this season and 19 wins in their just 25 starts. Ok, if you prefer, -21 out of 29. Kenny Raffensberger'sunning control stuff silenced the Brooks in the opener despite Don Newcombe's five-hitter. Then Ewell (The Whip) Blackwell struck out nine in a sizzling night performance. Neither Cincy pitcher walked a man. Ted Kluszewski was the big man of the First game. His first-inning single drove in one of two Cincy runs and his 17th homer in the sixth added the last. Two Run Error Blackwell bested young Chris Van Cuyk, a sensational winner in his only previous big league start. Van Cuyk left with the score tied, 22, and two men on in the seventh.
