Anaheim Gazette July 18, 20 and 27, 1950) STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS Sealed proposals will be received at the office of the State Highway Engineer, Room 406, Division of Highways Building, 120 South Spring Street, Los Angeles, California, until 2 o'clock p.m. on August 10, 1950, at which time they will be publicly opened and read in Room 2 of said building, for construction on State highway in accordance with the specifications therefor, to which special reference is made, as follows: Orange County, on Manchester Avenue between Lincoln Avenue and Los Angeles Street (VII-Ora-174-Ana, A), furnish and install full traffic actuated signal system at 3 intersections; furnish and install intersection lighting at three (3) intersections and furnish highway lighting equipment for three (3) intersections. Bids are required for the entire work described herein. In accordance with the provisions of Section 1779 of the Labor Code, the Department of Public Works has ascertained the general prevailing rate of wages applicable to the work to be done to be as follows: Classification Rate per hour Carpenter $2.20 Cement finisher 2.28 Concrete mixer operator—skin type 2.08 Electrician 2.40 Flagman 1.65 Laborer 1.65 Operator and tender of pneumatic and electric tools, vibrating machines and similar mechanical tools not separately classified herewith 1.85 Any classification omitted herein not less than 1.65 Over time—one and one-half (1½) times the above rates. Sundays and holidays—one and one-half (1½) times the above rates. Plans may be seen, and forms of proposal, bonds, contract, and specifications may be obtained at the office of the State Highway Engineer. CAN'T BE MUCH IN LOVE It does not seem to me that a couple can be very much in love who haggle over who-should-pay-for-what in setting up their first home. Nor that they have any faith in each other if neither one can trust the other to do the generous thing. I should say that they are thinking more of their pocketbooks than they are of their hearts and that there was small chance of happiness for a husband and wife who are trying to drive hard bargains with each other and each striving to get the best of the transaction. But, of course, if you feel that finance cuts more figure than romance in marriage, then you are very wise to settle the money problem before you get married. Furnishing the house has always been the man's responsibility as he is supposed to be the head of it, and the common usage is for the bride to supply only the household linens and such small articles as she chooses. But this presupposes the old-fashioned marriage in which the lovebirds were more concerned in building their nests than they were in holding out on each other. As a general thing, a joint checking account is a good way for a husband and wife to keep their money, but perhaps one of you had better hold on to your own if you believe your prospective husband or wife to be capable of grafting. In said Orange County, where said action was brought and is pending, the certificate of residence provided for in Section 1163 of the Civil Code of the State of California; It is ordered that the service of Summons in this action be made upon the Defendant herein above named by publication thereof in the Anaheim Gakette, a newspaper published at Annheim, California, hereby designated as the newspaper most likely to give notice to said defendant that said publication be made at least once a week for two months. And it further in like manner satisfactorily appearing that the residence of said Defendant was apparently last known to be in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It is ordered and directed that a copy of the Summons and Complaint in this suit be forthwith deposited in a United States post-office, with postage thereon fully prepaid, directed to said defendant at General Delivers, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, said place of residence. The said copy of Summons and Complaint shall be deposited in the post-office, as aforesaid, by Claude M. Owens who is hereby selected to perform that duty.
