C. Blaze or Door Block Do Not Help Taxation Six requests for reductions in "relief" in connection with property assessments in Orange county which accumulated during the two weeks the County Supervisors have been sitting as a Board of Equalization all were rejected yesterday, as the board concluded its hearings. Principal request was that on R. McCoy and W. A. Mills, whose automobile agency in Fullerton was destroyed by fire, June 17 and who told the board that they did not feel that they should taxed on their business because they no longer have a business there. While expressing "sympathy the supervisors explained that they could not cancel an assessment such ground because all property is assessed as it stands on Marcelo Percy Owen, Buena Park garage owner, requested "relief" although he said he had no complaint of the amount of the assessment on business property on Manches Ave. His request, he said, was based on the fact that construction of Santa Ana Freeway has blocked off access to his establishment he will suffer a loss of business at least 90 days. The board, in anticipation of other similar requests later, referred to County Counsel Joel Ogle his opinion as to whether cancellations could be granted. Ogle applied that they could not be granted on such grounds. C. Touring MYF Group Heads Home After Pacific Coastal Sojourn EDITOR'S NOTE: The roving group of young White Temple Methodist thespians which has presented plays the length and breadth of the Pacific Coast in recent weeks, return home Saturday. Their final eye-witness, on-the-spot communique detailing their adventures follows: BURLINGAME, Calif.—It's the "home stretch" now for the coast-trotting MYF Footlighters dramatic troupe from White Temple Methodist Church in Anaheim, as they leave Burlingame today for the 500 mile drive home. They have carried the name of Anaheim into headlines up and down the Pacific Coast, and in every major city have won acclaim as an almost-professional calibre group. Now the hardest job will be to live up to that reputation in the home town next Sunday night! Tuesday night's performance of "The Brother" in Corvallis, Ore., was marked by the attendance of numerous students and faculty from Oregon State College, as the Methodist Church is situated directly across the street from the campus. "These kids of yours are better than many of our college players," stated Leo Waian, former school official of Burbank, Cal., now taking his doctor's degree at OSC. Nancy Rail had to "go it blind" thru the performance tonight, as one of Oregon's "'gentle zephyrs" had blown off her glasses while she dozed in the car somewhere between Portland and Corvallis. Incidentally, we are wondering if there is any highway anywhere on the coast that isn't being repaired this summer? 'Loveliest Scenary' The trip from Corvallis to San Francisco required two days, but included some of the loveliest scenery of our entire tour. We followed the Cascade route through the heart of the maun-set-tipped peak of Mt. Shasta, the troupers drove on Thursday into San Francisco. The Sacramento Valley was hot, but cool breezes began to blow cast of Vallejo, and reminded us of the summer coolness of Anaheim. This evening's performance of "The Brother" was sponsored by the entire San Francisco Sub-District of the Methodist Youth Fellowship at Park-Presidio Church, and was followed by a square dance party presented by the young Methodists of the Bay City. A standing invitation was extended to our Anaheim troupe to return any time and be assured of a good audience in San Francisco. The terrific pace of this tour is beginning to relax now as we near home, and the young people have probably had more fun in this town than on any single stopover of the tour. Dinner in Chinatown, luncheon at Fisherman's Wharf, riding the cable-cars over San Francisco's steep hills, visiting the Aquarium and shopping in the glamorous stores occupied the hours so completely that we hated to push on to Burlingame in the late afternoon. Last Performance Friday night's performance at Burlingame was the final one of the roadshow tour, but it set a high mark for the Footlighters to live up to in their presentation of "The Brother" in the Greek Theater in City Park in the old home town of Anaheim next Sunday night. So today we push on homeward down the California coast, after two wonderful weeks of sightseeing, of hospitality, of hard work, and of glorious fun. This will not be the last of White Temple's drama tours. Invitations are stacking up for return engagements, and also invitations to present plays in new towns not yet visited. A Bakers' account on the fact that construction of Santa Ana Freeway has blocked off access to his establishment he will suffer a loss of business at least 90 days. The board, in anticipation of other similar requests later, referred to County Counsel Joel Ogle his opinion as to whether cancations could be granted. Ogle replied that they could not be granted on such grounds. Trinity Lutheran Church of Santa Ana requested cancellation assessment on its parochial school but was refused on the ground school, being privately operated not legally exempt from taxation. County Water Situation Aired At Conference The proposed new county municipal water district, designed for annexation to Metropolitan Water District, would obtain both treat water for domestic use and treated water, at a lower price, for agriculture use, it was explained plans to the press at a conference in Santa Ana by chairmen of two district organizations promoting annexation to MWD. Glenn Allen, mayor of Orange and chairman of the five-city annexation program started some months ago, and Walter Schmidt of Anaheim, chairman of the Farn Bureau and Orange county water district group that more recently proposed a nearly countywide annexation to MWD, outlined the plans to the press at a conference. The larger annexation program would add some $200,000,000 assessed valuation to that of cities already holding membership in MWD, including Anaheim so that the total would represent about 85 per cent of the county entire assessed valuation, or approximately $377,000,000, it was stated. Construction of new feeder lines into the county would be necessary to carry raw water for irrigation in the areas chiefly described covered by the two major water companies, the sections north Buena Park and Fullerton, the Newhope area, El Toro section and western Orange county. It estimated that the cost of the rainy water would be about $10 per acre foot, as compared to the $15 now being paid for MWD water by the Orange county water district. While MWD officials are said to be interested in the Orange county plan, no commitments have been made. The trip from Corvallis to San Francisco required two days, but included some of the loveliest scenery of our entire tour. We followed the Cascade route through the heart of the mountains to Klamath Falls, passing through a constant panorama of foaming streams, dense forests, snow-capped peaks, and sparkling lakes. The clouds that shadowed us in Washington state are not behind now, and Oregon won the nod as the most beautiful state in our itinerary. This eastern highway is so much straighter and tastier than the mid-state route that we found ourselves after luncheon at the gateway to Crater National Park, and determined to make the short sidetrip in to see this scenic wonder. The lake was even bluer than its many pictures, but around the shore was covered with a strange scum that changes color from day to day. The ranger (who developed quite a speaking acquaintance with our young thespians and with Paul Demaree) states that this is due to organisms washed down from the melting snowbanks around the lake which change colors as they come in contact with various types of algae. This was Rev. Frank E. Butterworth's birthday, so as director of the party he was honored with an informal birthday trout dinner in the "Crater room" of the Hotel Winema at Klamath Falls. Davis and Irving Steen of San Diego collide at American Legion stadium. Matchmaker Cal Working said yesterday that the State Athletic Commission has sanctioned the 12-round affair as a title bout. Steen recognized as the California middleweight champ, can make 147 pounds. Davis licked him before Steen moved into the middleweight class. The greatest vacation spree in history is now on!
