U.S. Far East headquarters informed the Defense Department the defenders were holding all along the line and that enemy pressure slackened. The Washington spokesman warned against considering this a decisive turning point. However, there is a definite stiffening of defenses, and there is more tactical support from artillery and air, the Defense Department reported. This has kept the Americans in the battle below the Kum river at Taejon, where communist troops last were reported at the city's outskirts. They want to preserve a few of the comforts of life even if they have to hoard them in the clothes closet and the garage. REMEMBER — One person's misfortune may be another's good fortune. FATHER and SON BUILD THIS 1950 BUICK 4-DOOR SUPER TOURBACK MODEL Dear Dad: Always want a Buick? Well, if you don't have one here's your chance for you—and Junior—to make an 11-inch exact-scale miniature. It doesn't have Dynaflow, but it does have a miniature electric motor driven by two 10¢ No. 935 Eveready Flashlight batteries. Flick the switch and watch this Super scoot over any smooth surface! You can build this realistic model from these plans and instructions and you can obtain additional information from the May issue of Mechanix Illustrated magazine. The model is made entirely from balsa wood so visit your local hoppy shop for the materials. If the materials are not available or you have any questions regarding construction, drop me a penny postcard addressed to Father and Son in care of your local newspaper. The body is built up from ¼ and ½ inch sheet balsa. Enlarge and trace the side and top views to full size, using the ½ inch squares to make the outlines. Trace the various outlines on each piece of balsa, cement them together and proceed to carve the exterior outline. If you ever run into difficulty when carving, you can always visit K. F. Heillyer Buick show room and look at the real car. The 1½ inch diameter wheels are of rubber. Note that only one rear wheel is driven by the motor and that the two 10¢ Eveready No. 935 flashlight cells are mounted in a battery box that is part of the entire removable motor section. After the outside is shaped and the motor hooked up, you'll be able to paint the model. First use a coat of wood filler and follow with four to six coats of colored model airplane dope. Add the trim and your Buick will be ready! Good luck, Larry Eisinger Crfts and Hobbes Editor Mechanix Illustrated WORK SESSION—Backgrounded by construction scene at the site of the new Kwikset factory building, C. R. Young, contractor; J. W. Glen Curtis of Brea brought one of the year's most interesting programs to the Anaheim Kiwanis this noon at the Elk's club when he showed pictures and told of his several years residence in Ecuador as a representative of the State department. His account and excellent pictures showing the terrible earthquake scenes gave a vivid impression of the horrors endured in the South American country. One of the pictures showed a small village in the center of the quake area where over 2000 persons were lost. Another where an entire village had been wiped out and covered to a depth of 800 feet by an adjoining mountain. Dr. Curtis concluded with a description of the socialist welfare state which governs Ecuador, exhorting Americans, on the strength of his observations, to safeguard their free way of life against the ravages of socialism which have vitiated Ecuador throughout its entire history. SAN DIEGO JOBS UP SAN DIEGO (UP)—San Diego is no longer on the critical unemployment list as it has been for several months, according to C. Bert Allen, manager of the State Department of Employment here. Allen said the jobless have dropped from 16,500 to 6500 in the last 12 months, with increased employment in fishing, industry, seasonal agriculture and manufacturing.
