Over 100 Pro Gridders Begin Practice Chores
By The Associated Press
More than 100 football players from three National League teams got down to the tough training grind today, with several hundred additional candidates due to report at other camps within two weeks.
The largest turnout, 51 players, greeted Coach Herman Ball of the Washington Redskins at Occidental college, Los Angeles.
At the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif., Joe Stydahar counted 41 candidates for the Los Angeles Rams.
Clem Crowe, former coach of the defunct Buffalo Bills, had a turnout of 24—mostly rookies—at Western Maryland college, Westminster, Md., as the Baltimore Colts began drills. Another group of Colts, including 20 holdovers, are to report later in the week.
"The lads are in the best shape I've ever seen on opening day," said Stydahar at Redlands. Among the Rams reporting was Glenn Davis, All-America back from Army in 1944-45-46.
Two Los Angeles rookies, guard Stan West from Oklahoma and fullback Ralph Pasquariello from Villanova, leave camp Wednesday for Chicago and the college all-star game Aug. 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
At Los Angeles the Redskins, led by slingin' Sammy Baugh, got right down to business with two workouts. This will be Baugh's 14th pro season.
The Redskins lose five rookies temporarily to the Chicago All-Star game. They are quarterback Eddie Le Baron from College of the Pacific, tackle Lou Karras from Purdue, center Harry Ulinski from Kentucky.
Sugar Risks Axing in Pennsylvania
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP)—Sugar Ray Robinson is likely to find himself suspended and fined in Pennsylvania today but whether the National Boxing Association concurs is another question.
Robinson announced yesterday after undergoing a physical check-up by a State Athletic Commission doctor that he would not go through with a fight against Jose Basora here tomorrow night. The 15-round fight was for the Pennsylvania version of the middle-weight crown, held by Robinson along with his world welterweight title.
The slim Harlem negro said he had a backache. But Dr. Leonard M. Freda, commission physcian, said he could find nothing wrong with Robinson.
Chairman George Jones, Jr., of the commission said that if Robinson didn't show up he would be given the heaviest fine ever as
Police men nail baseball gamblers
CULVER CITY, Calif. (AP)

Dets. Robert M. Conlon and Sgt. H. H. Martin said the men apparently had been taking bets on Pacific Coast League games—on various combinations of scores, total scores, and individual player performances.
The officers reported seizing a book containing the names of some 200 prominent persons from San Francisco to San Diego, with added notations indicating bets ranging from $50 to $1000.
Arrested on charges of violating the city's bookmaking ordinance were Herman Mallard, 39; Joseph Harris, 50, and Max T. Brown, 47, all of Los Angeles. They were released on $250 bond each.

NEW YORK (AP) — Now that Jackie Robinson's hot bat has cooled somewhat, another late summer batting duel between the speedy Brooklyn infielder and Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals is in prospect.

Aragon Meets Bolanos in Grudge Bout
LOS ANGELES (P)—Principals in one of the bitterest ring grudges here in many years, lightweights Anrique Bolanos and Art Aragon, hook up tonight in a 10-round bout at Olympic auditorium.
A turn away crowd of more than 10,000 is expected to pay nearly $38,000 for the clash, a match of a battle last February that saw Aragon win via a TKO in the 12th and final round.
Long before that date, the rival camps had taken verbal shots at each other as Bolanos sought to maintain his unchallenged dominance of the lightweight division out here and the younger Aragon began climbing.
Back of the feud was the fact that Aragon and his manager, Jimmy Roche, boxed at the Hollywood Legion stadium when it was under boycott by the Southern California Managers Guild over a television controversy.

What Goes with Dodgers Is Big Baseball Query
By JACK HAND
(Associated Press Sports Writer)
What goes with Brooklyn? Is this the big push? Are Burt Shotton’s boys ready to take charge?
Baseball fans ask these questions today because the sudden turnabout of Dodger pitching has jumbled the National League race. It’s only one game from the Phillies in first to the Dodgers in fourth. Last Thursday night, the Brooks trailed by 5½.
A week ago President Branch Rickey of the Dodgers meaned about the “worst pitching staff collapse I’ve ever seen.” Now his onrushing Brooks have a budding five-game win streak.
In St. Louis, they’re convinced the Dodger push is on. So far the Brooks have whipped the Cardinals 11 out of 14, the last seven in a row, including a day-night doubleheader yesterday.
Nine of 14 Brooklyn pitchers to face St. Louis have gone all the way—Preacher Roe—four times and Don Newcombe three.
Roe did it again last night as the Dodgers crushed Howie Pollet, 7-1, after stumbling to a 6-3 afternoon decision for Dan Bankhead. The preacher man allowed only five hits for his 11th victory.
A four-run outburst in the first inning was enough for the Dodgers in the day game.
Gil Hodges, injured in the sixth inning of the opener, missed the night work, snapping his string of 328 consecutive games since 1948.
The double Cardinal loss let the idle Phillies, rained out at Chicago, sneak back into first place. Then come St. Louis and Boston tied for second.
Wilson Hurls PCL North to Upset Victory
By JIM HUBBART
Associated Press Sports Writer
Seattle Manager Paul Richards is right with the world and with Pacific Coast League President Clarence Rowland today. His pitching prodigy, Jim Wilson, toiled in the All-Star game after all.
As anticipated, Wilson didn’t pitch much. Only two innings, but he retired the Southerners in order and — what’s more — got credit for the victory as the North won, 9 to 2.
Last night’s ninth annual All-Star contest marked only the second time the North has whipped the South. Jim Tabor, Sacramento’s third baseman, delivered the big punch, a three-run homer in the sixth inning off Los Angeles moundsman Cal McLish.
The North’s pitching was superb. Matt Surkont, the Sacramento ace.
Locals Second at Laguna Spikefest
Paced by Larry Weaver, Anaheim tracksters nabbed a second place at the Laguna Beach Intercity track meet last Saturday. The Lagunans won the affair with 89½ points. Anaheim followed with 69. Other finishers were Santa Ana, 30½; Buena Park, 26, and Capistrano, 20.
Weaver won the broad jump, high jump, pole vault, ran on the victorious Anaheim relay team, and took seconds in the discus, 120 highs and shot put to garner 24¼ points and the individual high score trophy.
Larry Kirchman sped to victory in the 100, 220 and 440 and added a quarter to the relay win.
Leonard Weaver took a second in the 440, a third in the discus and fourths in the 220 and shot out.
Enoch Peterson fourthed in the 120 highs and the 440. Chuck Lyons, running with the big boys, took fourths in the mile and 880.
In the 14-15 age group, Albert Salaets finished fourth in the 75 yard dash; Lyons took fourth in the 60 highs. Fourth places also went to Anaheim 220 shuttle and 440 relay squads.
In the 12-13 age group, Joel Habener nabbed second in the 60 yard dash. The Anaheim relay squad finished in similar position.
The 10-11 age relay squad from Anaheim walked off with the number one spot in their event. Squadmen included Ben Bushman, Micky Flynn, Dale Ratzlaff and Dick Shipwright.
Dropo Bids for AL Batting Lead
CHICAGO (AP)—Boston rookie Walt Dropo has popped up as a dangerous contender in the American League batting race.
Through Sunday's games, Detroit's George Kell owned a pace-setting .358 percentage. This, however, was only six points ahead of Dropo, who climbed nine points just week to .352. During the week Bell slumped seven points.
In third place with .351 was Cleveland's Lary Doby, who had 70 two weeks ago. Others in the top ten included: Hoot Evers, Detroit, .335; Al Zarilla, Boston, .333; Dom Dimaggio, Boston, .322; Bob Dillinger, Philadelphia, .321; Ed Williams, Boston, .321; Paul Schiner, Philadelphia, .319; and Phil Rizzuto, New York, .318.
Bill Pierrro, a rookie from Indianapolis making his first big league appearance, was well on his way to success when Boston hung up a big five in the ninth and dumped Pittsburgh, 8-6. Pierro wasn't charged with the loss. That went to Hank Borowy who gave up a double to Earl Torgeson and a triple to Sid Gordon after relieving Pierro.
Ralph Kiner hit his 26th homer, tying Cleveland's Al Rosen for the major league lead.
Jim Hearn, making his first New York start since his purchase from St. Louis a week ago, held Cincinnati to four hits in an easy 10-3 romp. He retired 14 men in order and allowed no hits after the fourth.
Detroit boosted its American League lead to 4½ games by whipping the Philadelphia A's in a twilight-night doubleheader. The runnerup New York Yankees played only one game, edging Chicago, 4-3.
Charley Keller's pinch triple, a pinch single by Freddie Hutchinson and Jerry Priddy's timely single, helped the Tigers rally with three in the eighth inning of the 8-6 opener. Hal Newhouser won his 10th over reliefer Carl Scheib.
