WHITE Gazette Home Economist Ice tinkling in glasses and delectable cookies on a tray spell summertime enjoyment whatever the hour. Iced tea, high on the list of thirst quenchers, is at its best when made by pouring hot tea over crushed ice. Serve it with lemon slices, sugar and a sprig of mint. Iced coffee adds to hot weather enjoyment. Make coffee in the usual way, sweeten it with sugar and chill. Just before serving, add two tablespoons of cream for every cup of coffee. Serve the coffee over crushed ice or pour the chilled and sweetened coffee into glasses and top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. If you like your coffee strong, freeze coffee into cubes in the refrigerator and add the cubes to the chilled coffee in place of regular ice. To have lemonade at a moment's notice, stir up an uncooked base and keep it in a covered glass jar in the refrigerator. LEMONADE BASE 2 cups lemon juice 3 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1 cup sugar (according to Mix thoroughly. Chill for at least 2 hours. Open 1 package (9 ounce) Rockwood chocolate mint wafers. Shape cookies by enclosing each wafer in about 1 tablespoon of dough. Place on a greased baking sheet about two inches apart. Top each cookie with a walnut half. Bake in a moderate oven (375 degrees), for 10 to 12 minutes. CHOCOLATE DROP COOKIES ½ cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg, unbeaten 2 squares chocolate, melted ½ cup sour milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1¼ cup sifted flour ¼ teaspoon soda ¼ teaspoon salt ¾ cup chopped nuts If you do not have sour milk or buttermilk on hand, sour sweet milk by adding 1 teaspoon vinegar per half cup. Cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Stir in melted chocolate, milk and vanilla. Then add flour which has been sifted. Traffic Toll High in County Over Weekend One fatality and injury of 24 other persons, four of them seriously, resulted from week-end traffic in Orange county. Manuel Costellanas, 15, Los Angeles, who was walking at the rear of a file of boys along Coast highway half a mile west of Huntington Beach city limits, at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, was almost instantly killed when struck by an automobile whose driver was not immediately identified. The boy was dead upon arrival at the Orange County hospital. Three persons received major injuries and two were injured less seriously in a collision between cars driven by Lucy Miller, 26, Pasadena, and Frank Ferrar, 50, Woodhaven Branch, N. Y., at Buena Park Saturday evening, Mrs. Ferrar, 50, and Mr. and Mrs. George Adelhardt, Santa Ana; received major injuries and were taken to Anaheim Community hospital. The two drivers received minor injuries. Five were injured at 4:50 a.m. today on Harbor blvd., south of Anaheim, in a collision between cars driven by Hartley H. Cunningham, 38, Hawthorne, and Sam Chavez, 17, San Fernando. Receiving minor injuries were Cunningham, Robert Wilson, 31, Vence, James D. LEMONADE BASE 2 cups lemon juice 3 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1 cup sugar (according to your taste) Combine and stir until sugar is dissolved. For each serving, use four tablespoons of the lemon syrup plus ice and water to fill a tall glass. The base makes about 8 servings and will keep fresh tasting for several days if kept cold. Ice cream sodas are made easily at home with ice cream and the carbonated beverage of your choice. My favorite is a root beer float made by pouring ice cold root beer over vanilla ice cream. The children like strawberry soda poured over strawberry or vanilla ice cream because it looks so pretty. The possibilities for home soda combinations are limited only by your imagination. Ginger ale frost is nice for a crowd because it can be prepared ahead of time. This recipe will fill about eight or 10 tall glasses with ice added. GINGER ALE FROST 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 teaspoon whole cloves ½ inch stick cinnamon ¼ teaspoon allspice ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 1 sprig fresh mint 1 slice orange 1½ cups orange juice 1 cup grapefruit juice 1 pint ginger ale ½ orange, sliced Ice cubes, fresh mint A simply syrup makes the best foundation for a fruit beverage. Combine sugar, water and spices in a small sauce pan. Heat to boiling and boil for five minutes. Remove from heat, add the sprig of fresh mint and one slice of orange. Place syrup to cool. In the meantime, prepare and combine fruit juice. Use fresh, canned or frozen juice. Strain syrup when cool into the fruit juices. This can be done well ahead of serving. Just before serving, add ginger ale and pour over ice cubes in glasses. Decorative ice cubes will glamorize the most ordinary drink. Fill a refrigerator tray with water. Color the water if you like with glasses and top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Fold in the cornflakes and walnuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from the pan at once. **** Books for children seem more wonderful each year. There is a delightful new one which has been receiving highest praise from critics everywhere. It is called "The Wise Old Goose," and was written right here in Anaheim by Lenoir Richards Martin and her mother, Anna L. Richards. It contains verse, a lovely story, and for the child who shows interest in daneing, a detailed dance description. The authors are founders of the Richards-Martin School of Dancing at 719 N. Los Angeles st., and are the ones who each year stage a dance pageant in Anaheim for the benefit of the Parent-Teacher Association. It was an inspiration to me the other day to chat with Mrs. Martin at her bedside where illness confines her a good share of the time. In spite of her disabilities, she is leading a busier, more full life than any homemaker I have met in a long time. She has been a very talented dancer in her lifetime and has worked with children for many years. When dancing was no longer possible for her, she taught herself to draw and turned to the George Adelhardt, Santa Ana; received major injuries and were taken to Anaheim Community hospital. The two drivers received minor injuries. Five were injured at 4:50 a.m today on Harbor blvd., south of Anaheim, in a collision between cars driven by Hartley H. Young, 48, Beverly Hills, Arthur Button, 41, Pico, and Alphonso Navarro, 18, San Fernando. Six were injured Sunday at 4:10 a.m.in a crash on Garden Grove blvd., near Los Alamitos. Drivers were William Harrison Brazzle, 22 Los Alamitos, and David Heredia, 22, Pasadena. A collision between cars driven by Emily Pauk, 32,Huntington Beach, and Joe M.Marler,Los Angeles,Sunday at 9:20 p.m.in Midway City caused injury to Marler's wife,Betty,22,and two children,Don age two,and Carol Ann,four. They were treated at Orange County hospital. Collision Sunday at 6 a.m.between a car driven by Doris Wayne Stroud,20,Montebello,and a parked state highway truck on Highway 101 west of Laguna Canyon rd.caused major injury to Stroud, the who was taken to Santa Ana Community hospital. His companion,Coleen Freed,27,Southgate,也 was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Claud Burchit,75.Yorba Linda, receiver minor injuries and was taken to Fullerton Cottage hospital after his motor scooter was struck by an automobile driven by Farrell J.Calinsky,18,Brea,Sunday at 8:20 p.m.on Imperial highway.west of Casa Loma st. Just before serving, add ginger ale and pour over ice cubes in glasses. Decorative ice cubes will glamorize the most ordinary drink. Fill a refrigerator tray with water. Color the water, if you like, with food coloring and then drop into each section of the ice cube tray a maraschino cherry, a fresh berry, a piece of lemon or pineapple, or a sprig of mint. A beverage served with these unusual ice cubes will be a conversation piece. Now for some cookies to go with the refreshing drink. The newest cookie sensation is the one which won the $10,000 prize money in the recent Pillsbury Flour baking contest. It was the entry of a home-maker in Ohio who used Rockwood chocolate mint wafers to create a new taste treat. STARLIGHT MINT SURPRISE COOKIES Sift 3 cups sifted Pillsbury flour 1 teaspoon soda ½ teaspoon salt Cream. ½ cup butter ½ cup shortening Add 1 cup sugar ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar, mix thoroughly Add 2 eggs, unbeaten 2 tablespoons water 1 teaspoon vanilla Beat well Blend in Dry ingredients. When dancing was no longer possible for her, she taught herself to draw and turned to the field of costume design. She has become adept at setting dance routines down on paper and her work is in demand all over the world. She says there are just not enough hours in the day for all she wants to do. Pen and ink drawings of the two little Dutch children in "The Wise Old Goose" are truly delightful. Anyone reading the verse, trying the dance routine or studying the drawings will be convinced of the excellence of this book for children. The Junior Rendezvous Children's Shop at 721 N. Los Angeles st., carries "The Wise Old Goose," and each copy is autographed by the authors. Dorothy Dix (Continued from Page 3) job that takes both a husband and wife working together to pull off. Don't save all the temper and nerves and irritability that you dared not show the public for home consumption. Sixth. Deal generously with your wife about money. Give her not only a housekeeping allowance but an allowance for herself. No woman can run a house economically if she doesn't know how much she has to spend. And no woman ever forgives a man who makes her come to him like a beggar for every cent. Giving a wife an allowance saves 365 breakfast-table spats a year. It preserves a wife's self-respect and makes her think of her husband asa partner instead of a tightwad. RESPECT HER FAMILY Seventh. Don't treat your wife's family as if they were poison and act as if you were being martyred every time they come on a visit. You may not love them, but she does, and if she failed in affection and loyalty to the mother who bore her and the father who toiled to support her and the brothers and sisters she grew up with, she would lack the very qualities that make her desirable as a wife. Eighth. Make little treats for your wife. Give her surprises. Take her on little trips. Remember anniversaries. Do something to keep her thinking that you still regard her as a Lady Love instead of a household convenience. Spending a little money on giving a wife a good time is the best investment any man ever makes. Ninth. Chum with your wife. Talk to her about the things that she is interested in. Tell her of your hopes and plans. It is the easiest thing in the world for a man to get so absorbed in his business and for a woman to get so obsessed with the children that they lose touch with each other and drift apart; and come to be such strangers that they cannot even carry on a conversation together, because neither knows anything of the other's inner life. Watch out or this will happen to you. Tenth. Don't take your wife for granted. She isn't a mind-reader and doesn't know that you love her and appreciate her and think she is the greatest woman in the world. Never cease telling her how marvelous you think she is, and if you will do that she will be the happiest woman in the world and the most envied.
