Ted Williams Out for Season? BOSTON (F)—Surgeons removed seven bone fragments today from the fractured left elbow of the Boston Red Sox' $125,-000-year slugger Ted Williams. Williams, who suffered the injury when he struck an outfield wall while reaching for a fly ball during the recent All-Star game, eventually will recover full use of the arm, surgeons said, but they would not predict when he could resume playing baseball. "When Williams will play ball again is very indefinite at present," said a Red Sox statement issued after the operation. Dr. Joseph Shortell, orthopedic surgeon, who performed the operation, was quoted as saying there was "a good possibility" Williams would be off the diamond for the balance of the season. But the Red Sox took the news as "part of the game" and refused to admit they were out of the pennant race, although eight games behind the front-running Detroit Tigers. "There's no filling Williams' shoes," said Manager Steve O'Neill in announcing Clyde Vollmer will take over left field and bat in Ted's No. 3 spot. Williams suffered his injury after hauling down Ralph Kiner's long smash in the first inning of the major leagues All-Star classic in Chicago Tuesday. "I hit the wall with the heel of my hand," Ted explained. "But It was in the elbow that I noticed the pain." Williams said the pain didn't bother him too much until he left the game at the end of eight innings. in announcing Clyde Vollmer will take over left field and bat in Ted's No. Then, he said, it started to ache and by the time he boarded a plane for Boston he had to keep it perfectly still and even then it throbbed. The surgeon said the injury is "much the same as one caused by a person falling on his outstretched hand" and is "very apt to affect the use of the left arm." A righthanded thrower, Red Sox officials are worried most that the injury will affect Ted's terrific power in batting. As a lefty batter, Ted gets much of his drive from his left arm. Costner Set to Menace Crown PHILADELPHIA (P)—Ike Williams was expected to use George (Sugar) Costner as a stepping stone to a welterweight title fight with Ray (Sugar) Robinson. Instead, the lanky Costner thrashed lightweight champ Williams and emerged himself as a top contender for Robinson's crown. Costner turned in the little upset of the year last night when he handed Williams one of the worst lickings the 135 pound-title-holder ever received. The Camden, N. J., Negro simply smashed Ike into submission in a 10-round non-title scrap at Shibe Park. So superior was Costner that one of the judges, Frank Knarsborough, gave the winner all 10 rounds. The other judge, Lou Tress, and referee Dave Beloff were not much kinder. Both scored it 8-2 for Costner. The Associated Press score card voted Costner 8-1-1. Mesquite and Utah Juniper, regarded as "pest" trees in the southwest, have been found to make good fence posts. Juvenile League Results BASEBALL A League Anaheim Gazette 6, Ehlers Bike Shop 5. The Bronx Bull paved the way for that encounter by belting out a 15-round unanimous decision over Mitri in Madison Square Garden last night. It was like old times in the palace of sock as a surprisingly large turnout of 18,369 paid $99,841 and rocked the roof with cheers. It was the biggest Garden fight gate in a couple of years. There was no radio or television broadcast. La Motta will cut into a richer pot than that if he signs to take on Sugar Ray outdoors in September. Abe Green, commissioner of the NBA, said the champ had agreed in writing months ago to defend his crown against Robinson within 90 days. "Of course Robinson has his own title fight with Charlie Fusari in Jersey City Aug. 9 but if he gets by that, La Motta and Robinson should be able to get together by September," said Greene. La Motta won only one of his five bouts with Robinson but all except one were very close. There was no doubt about last night's decision. La Motta won only one of his five bouts with Robinson but all except one were very close. There was no doubt about last night's decision. You could almost see La Motta, a shrewd businessman, counting the house as he started with Mitri. He hasn't looked that good in years. Making 159 pounds (Mitri weighed the same) didn't bother the champ at all. He won just about as he pleased over the previously unbeaten invader. He made the handsome, 24-year-old Italian fight the La Motta way and the end result was a pair of handsome shiners for Mitri and hardly a scratch for the Bull. The officials voted for the 29-year-old La Motta this way: Referee Mark Conn, 12-3; Judge Joe Agnello, 9-6; Judge Bert Grant, 8-7. The AP scorecard had the champ in front, 9-5-1. Mitri will get around $11,500 to console him for his shiners and broken record. The Bull, making his first defense since he won the crown from Cerdan 13 months ago, was a 5 to 8½ choice.
