NL All-Stars Claim Spots On Glory List CHICAGO, (AP) — Red Schoendienst ... Andy Pafko ... Larry Jansen ... Ewell Blackwell ... These are the names on everybody's lips following yesterday's National League stimulating 14-inning 4-3 victory over the favored American Leaguers "in the greatest of all 17 all-star games." Maybe you'd better add Manager Burt Shotton, Enos Slaughter and Ralph Kiner. For they, too, sparkled as the victory-starved Nationals won for the first time since 1944. Schoendienst was the big hero, of course. It was his home run into the upper deck of the left field stands in the top of the 14th that broke up the three hour and 19 minute overtime struggle — the first extra inning affair in all-star competition. Schoendienst, like the importal Babe Ruth, called his shot. "I'm going to end this thing right now," he told teammates Walker Cooper and batting practice pitcher Murray Dickson as he selected a bat. "Watch me hit one into the upper seats." Pafko saved the game in the bottom half of the 12th with a sensational catch of pinch hitter Tommy Heinrich's terrific clout that appeared labeled "home run" the instant the ball left the bat. Jansen pitched near perfect, ball in a five-inning tenure, the longest National League stint by one pitcher since Lon Warneke hurled Parko saved the game in the bottom half of the 12th with a sensational catch of pinch hitter Tommy Heinrich's terrific clout that appeared labeled "home run" the instant the ball left the bat. Jansen pitched near perfect, ball in a five-inning tenure, the longest National League stint by one pitcher since Lon Warneke hurled four innings in 1934. He allowed only one hit—a handle-hit single—and struck out six in shutting out the Amreiacn Leaguers from the seventh through the 11th innings. Blackwell came close to matching Jansen's performance, holding the American Leaguers to a lone hit in three shutout innings. The long, lean Cincinnati right-hander sent the near-capacity Comiskey Park crowd of 46,127 home limp from exhaustion when he wound up things by forcing the great Joe Dimaaggio to slap into a game-ending double play. Nearly all 19 of the 25 National Leaguers who appeared in the lineup covered themselves with glory. There was the brilliant catch by Slaughter of Walt Dropo's second inning clout that appeared headed over the center field wall. There was Ralph Kiner's titanic home run that tied up the game in the ninth inning. Slaughter also shone on offense. It was his triple in the second inning that set up both runs. Jackie Robinson, who led off the inning with a single, to right, crossed the plate on Slaughter's clout to the center field wall. Slaughter came in with the second run when Hank Sauer flied to right. It's impossible to overlook Shotton, the much abused pilot. Booed unmercifully at his pre-game introduction for his intended benching of Sauer in favor of his own Duke Snider, Shotton redeemed himself in the eyes of the fans with his strategic moves. Burt's 11th hour centerfield switch from Sauer to Slaughter paid off in the second inning when Epos made his glittering catch. His move of Slaughter to right and Pafko to center in the middle of the game set the stage for Andy's game-saving grab. Boyd, a speedster despite his 6-foot-plus, 205 pound frame, was signed today to play for the Los Angeles Rams in the National League as an end or defensive halfback. Head coach Joe Stydahar of the rams remembered what rival pro pilots apparently forgot — that Boyd was a football star first and a track athlete second. Blackwell Says Pitch to Clipper Was 'Wrong One' CHICAGO (UP)—Pitcher Ewell Blackwell revealed today that the double play ball he pitched to Joe DiMaggio to end the major leagues. All-Star game yesterday was a "wrong" pitch. "It got away from me," he admitted. "I intended to pitch him a curve ball on the outside so he couldn't pull it into the stands for a home run. Instead I fed him a curve ball in the inside corner. Just what I didn't want to do. My worst pitch turned out to be my best." Andy Pafko said he almost gave up on the ball Tommy Henrich hit in the 12th. Have you matched this sweet-stepping bonny against the tall bills, and the call of the straight-away? Lamotta Puts Crown on Block Tonight By MURRAY ROSE NEW YORK (AP)—Middleweight champion Jake LaMotta bucks a double jinx tonight when he defends his title against unbeaten Tiberio Mitri of Italy. The last three middleweight kings, Marcel Cerdan, Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano, all lost their crowns in their first defenses. All three were favored to win. LaMotta is a 7 to 5 choice to capture the 15-rounder (starting at 7 p.m., PDT) in Madison Square Garden. He won the championship from Cerdan. But Jake firmly believes "it's not going to happen to me." "This title is the thing I've always wanted and I'm going to keep it a long time. I'm in better shape for this fight than I've been in years." Jake, at 29, appears to be over the bill. He's taken plenty of punches in his 10 years of pro-battling, and slowed down considerably. He fights in 15-second flurries, hoping to get the officials' nod with short, eye-catching bursts. Mitri, who celebrated his 24th birthday today and hopes to cap it off with the world title, is fleet-footed and fast with his hands. The handsome, well-built invader throws a hard left jab, has a good right hand punch, and has supreme confidence. "I know I will win," he said. The fight won't be televised or broadcast. St. Boniface Hangs 6-5 Loss on Presbyterians St. Boniface edged Presbyterian 6-5 in an eight inning see-saw affair last night at City park. The scheduled Grace Lutheran-Evangelical United Brethren tussel was put off to a later date. Pat Patin came across with the St. Boniface winner in the overtime session. Pat singled aboard advanced around, the bags via pops by Al Buschman and John Steinborn and ultimately trotted in on Leo Waldman's single. The Presbyterians grabbed a first inning lead, scoring three runs on an error and a single by Rod Cookus and a grand slam by Leighton Ross. St. Boniface bounced back with two in their half of the first on five passes and a single by Steinborn. In the fourth they added two more as Bud Stoffel bashed a homer and the Presbyterians bobbled. They collected one more in the sixth. The Presbyterians tied the game up with a two-run seventh inning blast. Jack Paulus scored Bob Hall with a single and later came home courtesy of a St. Boniface miscue. An operation will be performed tomorrow at Santa Maria hospital to remove a bone fragment. Club Physician Ralph McCarthy said X-rays showed a fracture of the head of the left radius—a bone in the elbow. Mr. McCarthy said the best he could say now is that he hoped Ted would be able to play before the season ends. The slugger crashed into the wall at Comiskey park while chasing a fly from the bat of Ralph Kiner.
