Arlene Anderson Places Second in Beauty Show Arlene Anderson, recurrent Anaheim beauty contest winner, gleaned still another prize yesterday placing second in July 4th competition at Huntington Beach. Vying with more than 30 girls from all parts of the Southland, Miss Anderson received $25 as place money. She was edged by Beverly Jones of Long Beach. Yesterday's win brought her contest earnings for the month to $175. She now holds 10 trophies and has won or placed in 14. Maxine’s Beauty Salon Holding Opening Today Under new management, Maxine’s Beauty Salon, 234 E. Center st., opened its doors for business today. Formerly Morris Beauty Service, the shop is operated by Maxine Kramer, experienced hairstylist. Originally from Illinois, Mrs. Gramer has been engaged in beauty work for more than 12 years, holding a trophy in hairstyling given by the State National Hair Dressers in Illinois and several other awards. Coming to California about three and a half years ago, Mrs. Kramer, who had her own shop in the east for four years, worked in a shop at Newport Beach and later leased the Garden Grove Saintharium beauty shop. She presently makes her home in Fullerton. At her new location, she will feature permanents, shampoos, hair-styling, manteurs, bleaching, pedicures, facials, hair-tinting, cold waves, hair cuts, and other beauty culture. Famous names in permanents will be employed, including Zotos, Realistic, Helene Curtis, and Circlette. Nation at Glance (Continued from Page One) Yesterday we were out five pilots in making 123 jumps in a dawn to dark marathon. UNITED STATES TROOPS moved forward in a foreign land yesterday to fight in the name of freedom. And here at home their folk observed the anniversary of this nation’s independence, war-won 174 years ago. As in past years the homefolk thronged the beaches, ball parks and vacation spots. The weather was close to ideal. Hot dog and soda pop stands did a booming business. Fireworks, hands and barbecues got their usual play. But the contingent of troops in South Korea and concern over the possibility that their commitment may lead to another great war had their sobering effects. In Washington, President Truman passed the day quietly at home, reportedly keeping in close touch with developments in Korea. Echoes of the Far Eastern struggle Tank Thrust Traps Americans (Continued from Page One)lation that Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky, apparently missing from the Moscow scene since May 18, might be in China—or even in North Korea—planning the next Soviet blow against the Allies in the Orient. The air war raged in Korea, with American and British carrier planes joining the fray in tough strikes Monday and Tuesday against North Korean points, including the capital, Pyongyang. But the setback on the fighting front had the Americans anxious. The situation of the trapped Americans was reported “desperate,” but some hope was held out. An undisclosed number of South Koreans were also caught. An advanced American headquarters spokesmen said there was a chance the Americans could punch their way out of the pocket. The Americans were setting up a position south of red-captured Suwon. They met a red spearhead of eight tanks with artillery fire, knocking out two communist tanks. Front dispatches said the surviving red tanks wheeled suddenly and rammed themselves between the infantry position and its supporting artillery and supplies. Maj. Gen. William F. Dean, U.S. commander in Korea, hurried to the front after failing to hear from the American forces after the tank-artillery engagement. A U.S. liaison plane reported new red forces of undetermined strength moving southeast from Suwon. More Power En Route More U.S. Navy bombers were being prepared for action. An undisclosed number of B-29s of the 22nd Bombardment Group left Southland Plagued with Troublesome Brush Fires Southern California was plagued with brush fires today but one that for a time threatened a part of the city of Redlands was under control. The Redlands fire covered about 7500 acres of brush and swept within a stone's throw of a dozen expensive homes in the Sunset Drive area. A barn and a private courtyard were destroyed and many loving and dutiful children make, of breaking up their mother's home when their father dies. The sons and daughters are so overflowing with pity for poor Mother; they cannot bear to think of leaving her alone in the house that will seem so desolate with Father gone out of it that they snatch her out of the home, which has become part of her very life, they sell the furniture that is interwoven with her every memory and snucked to her by countless griefs and losses they separate her from her old friends and take her away into an entirely new environment in their own homes. FAMILIAR HOUSE A COMfort In taking Mother away from her own home they have taken from her the only thing that could really comfort her in her first grief over the loss of her husband. As long as she can stay in the familiar rooms in which they have lived so long she is not alone. His presence fills the place as it never can in her children's strange houses. Therei's comfort for her also in the familiar things, and the greatest comfort of all is in having something to do, the old routine tasks that must be done every day, and comfort in the old friends whose sympathy must come from the heart. It is a cruel thing to take an old woman out of her old home and put her to live in another woman's house even if that other woman is her own daughter. She never fits in and always feels herself an unwelcome guest to her in-laws. The children worry her. She has no friends and is lonely beyond belief. Her hands ache for the work to which she is accustomed, and she is miserable and makes those about her miserable. Far, far better for her children to make up a little purse and support mother in her old home than to try- to move her. Balboa Island Girl Injured When Horse Throws & Drags Her Peggy Lee Abbott, 18, Balboa Island was injured seriously shortly after noon yesterday near the Corona del Mar Skeet and Gun was close to ideal. Hot dog and soda pop stands did a booming business. Fireworks, bands and barbecues got their usual play. But the contingent of troops in South Korea and concern over the possibility that their commitment may lead to another great war had their sobering effects. In Washington, President Truman passed the day quietly at home, reportedly keeping in close touch with developments in Korea. Echoes of the Far Eastern struggle reached into the Pentagon, and other key federal agencies where many gave up the holiday to work. John Foster Dulles warned the nation that if faces a heavy task in its struggle with communism and "before it is finished we shall all of us have to pay a price." At Valley Forge, Pa., general of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower told Boy Scouts of 21 countries that the U.S. decision to aid the Koreans was "inescapable" with the only alternative another kind of Munich." LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette June 30, July 5, 8, 7, 10, 1950.) IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN AND FOR THE COUNTY OF ORANGE No. A-19822 NOTICE OF HEARING OF PETITION FOR PROBATE OF WILL AND FOR LETTERS TESTAMENTARY In the Matter of the Estate of LAURA T. LAKAY, Deceased. NOTICE IS HEREBY given that the petition of J. L. Montgomery for the probate of the Will of the above named decedent, and for the issuance of Letters Testamentary to the petitioner will be heard at 10 o'clock A.M. on July 14, 1950, at the court room of Department of the Superior Court of the State of California in and for the County of Orange. DATED June 29, 1950. E. J. SMITH, WM. P. WEBB, Attorney for Petitioner. Southern California was plagued with brush fires today but one that for a time threatened a part of the city of Redlands was under control. The Redlands fire covered about 7500 acres of brush and swept within a stone's throw of a dozen expensive homes in the Sunset Drive area. A barn and a private bowling alley were destroyed and two garages were damaged. The blaze started in the San Timoteo Canyon yesterday. Firemen and equipment for Redlands and seven nearby communities finally controlled it. Flames still crackled unchecked on Mr. San Gorgonio in San Bernardino county where some 11,000 acres has been burned over in a six-day fire. An attempt was unsuccessful yesterday to make rain by dropping dry ice on thunderouss over the 11,485-foot peak. Forestry officials said another attempt may be made today. Two hundred ranch fought a blaze which has covered 1200 acres of brush near Oak Glen in San Bernardino county. This is northeast of Yucaipa. There were a few scattered and minor grass and brush fires in the Los Angeles area. A new fire broke out near Santa Margarita in San Luis Obispo county yesterday and has swept over 7000 acres, still out of control. The big Arroyo Grande fire south of San Luis bispo was also burning furiously and has covered 13,000 acres. It is still out of control. Balboa Island Girl Injured When Horse Throws & Drags Her Peggy Lee Abbott, 16, Balboa Island was injured seriously shortly after noon yesterday near the Corona del Mar Skeet and Gun club when she was thrown and dragged by her horse. The accident happened not far from the Orange County airport. Cause of the runaway was not immediately learned: She was accompanied by Stanley R. Hodgkinson, 19 son of Newport Beach Chief of Police R. R. Hodgkinson. One of Miss Abbott's legs became caught in the riding gear when she was thrown from the horse. She was dragged face down for about half a mile. Young Hodgkinson lashed the horse but was in turn thrown and dragged, suffering bruises and rope burns on his hands. Miss Abbott sustained considerable bruises and cuts and had a badly injured eye. She is in St. Joseph hospital, Orange, where her condition is reported "not good." STREAMLINER HITS AUTO; DRIVER THROWN 60 FEET; STEPS FROM WRECK UNHURT The southbound Santa Fe San Diegan struck a stalled automobile north of Buena Park yesterday, tossing it 60 feet, but Ferlige Kroco, 57, stepped out of the wreckage unhurt. The train was traveling at 85 miles an hour when it hit the car.
