THE WINNAH!—David La Plante, eight-year-old Santa Ana lad, weighs in the pound and one-half carp which won him the grand prize at the Izaak Walton Huck Finn Day competition at Irvine Park Lake last Saturday. David's fish was the biggest one to come out of the water all day. Official weigher-inners are Ikes Walter Kohlenberger, Fullerton (left), and E. L. Finch, Anaheim. Di Maggio Assumes First To Bolster Drooping Yanks BOSTON (AP)—After setting center field standards for future generations to shoot at, Joe DiMaggio, today prepared to switch to first base to bolster his drooping world championship teammates. “This is strictly my idea,” said New York Yankee Managed Casey Stengel. “I’ve asked Joe to try first base to help the team. That position has been a sore spot for us all season. I expect to switch him in our next game in Washington.” A shrug was the 35-year-old DiMaggio’s immediate answer when asked how he thought he would do in the late Lou Gehrig’s position. Then, as an afterthought: “I’ll try anything if it will help the club.” He recalled that he had played only three professional games at first base, back in 1932, when, at 11, he was breaking in with San Francisco. Stengel, whose wilting title defenders have dropped nine of their last 13 games, has other drastic changes in mind. Since DiMaggio’s hitting has been down around the 260 mark, Stengel plans to drop him from the cleanup fourth spot to fifth in the batting order. Stengel blames much of the Yankee’s recent failures on the fact that southpaw pitchers have been passing the righthand-hitting DiMaggio to work on the lefthanded Yogi Berra. “I want to mix things up by batting Berra third and following him with the righthanded Hank Bauer and DiMaggio.” Other contemplated Stengel changes are making Cliff Mapes his regular center fielder with Bauer in right and leftinanded Gene Woodling and Jackie Jensen, righthanded hitting bonus player. Optimists, Legions Loses Contests It was a bad week-end for Anaheim Legion and Optimist baseball fans. Saturday Ruedy’s Legion juniors took a trip to the beach and bowed to Newport in a 6-4 contest. Sunday Huarte’s Optimists were good hosts to Sanza Ana as they selected the little half of a 11-8 slugfest. Newport collected six hits off Anaheim hurlers Joe Huarte, Manuel Ruiz and Dick Ramella. The Anaheimers managed only a quartet of knocks off winning pitcher LaBona. Wildness and all-round loose play characterized the Optimist game yesterday at La Palma park. He and 243 others set out today on two qualifying rounds to pick the top 100 for the title test, opening Wednesday. The main barrier in Bulla’s path is meticulous Bobby Locke of South Africa, the defending champion who is favored to become the first since Walter Hagen in 1928–29 to put two crowns together. The long-hitting Bulla spent an hour practicing last night after playing 18 practice holes over the neighboring Prestwick course. He said: "Boy, I'm hitting them all right on the nose now—I think I can win this thing." The onetime airlines pilot has been in the chase since 1929. Twice he was runner-up. He lost in 1939 to Britain's Dick Burton by two strokes. In 1946 He finished four strokes back of Sam Shead. Almost every year a single bad round throws him. For instance, in 1947 Bulla took 46 miserable Red Sox, Cards Hog All-Star Positions CHICAGO (AP) — The major league’s all-star fireworks don’t explode until July 11, but the rival American and National Leagues today had their big guns lined up for baseball’s midsummer classic.
