BETHEL BAPTISTS HANG FIRST SETBACK ON GRACE LUTHERANS
High flying Grace Lutheran took nosedive last night as Bethel Baptist, behind the no-hit pitching Gus Stark, pinned a 2-1 setback the league leaders.
The Lutherans remain in first place with a new-besmirched record of 5-1. The Baptists at 4-3 moved into a fourth place tie with St. Boniface.
The Baptists' winning run occurred in the sixth frame, breaking 1-1 deadlock. Herb Hamilton pitched the big one. Hamilton walked aboard, stole second and reached third on an overthrow and then came home on Lee Jim's long leftfield poke.
Art Altheide pitched valiantly for the losing Lutherans, giving only three knocks. Art whiffed total of 10 batters in the first innings.
Zion Lutheran nipped St. Boniface 4-3 in the evening's opener. The loss cost St. Boniface a tie in second place. Opposing pitchers Quegee and Fran Patin were usually stingy during the fray, each allowing only four hits.
St. Boniface assumed the lead in the contest in the fourth inning singles by Ray Heinz and Bud Geffel and a four-ply clout by Patin produced three runs.

Brough, Hart Gain Round 16 At Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON (AP) — Louise Brough of Beverly Hills, Calif., and Doris Hart of Jacksonville, Fla., powered their way into the round of 16 today in the women's singles of the all-England lawn tennis championships.
Miss Brough is top-seeded and the defending champion. She defeated Mrs. Joy Mottram of England, 9-7, 6-2.
Miss Hart trimmed little Gem Hoahing, the Anglo-Chinese girl from England, 6-2, 6-3.
Mrs. Mottram gave Miss Brough a lot of trouble in the first set. Louise took the first three games, then was outdriven and brought back level at 3-all. If Mrs. Mottram's service had been as sound as her ground strokes she might have pulled an upset.
In the second set Miss Brough's powerful driving and sure volleying took all the fight from her fast-tiring opponent.
Seventh seeded Gertrude (Gussy) Moran of Santa Monica, Calif., and Nancy Chaffee of Los Angeles had little difficulty joining the other American girls in their sweep toward what could be an all-U.S. semi-final.
Miss Moran eased by Mrs. Anne-Marie Seghers of France in their third round match, 6-4, 6-2.
Nancy brushed aside Mrs. Freda Hammersley of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-0.

Albans Paces Mathias in Tulare Decathlon Finale
TULARE, Calif. (AP)—The national decathlon championship moves into the showdown stage tonight, with North Carolina's Bill Albans setting the pace ahead of Bob Mathias, defending champion and pride of this bustling central California city.
Albans was hotter than the climate as he whizzed through the opening five events and posted a halfway total score of 4323 last night.
Mathias, however, showed improvement in each of the events over his score last year and finished with 4230 points, 93 behind Albans, and remained the favorite to wind up as the winner in a probable close finish.
Both 19-year-old Bob America's 1948 Olympic champion, and two-time winner of this national AAU crown, and Albans, third last year, are gunning for the world record of 7900 points scored by Glenn Morris in 1936.
At the halfway point, both were ahead of the Morris mark of 4192. Mathias scored the best mark in only one event, the shotput, at 47 feet, 6¼ inches. But he improved in each event over his last year's efforts by 290 points.
Albans, showing amazing gains all along the line, was 457 points ahead of himself. He scored the best marks in the 100 meter dash, 10.6, the 40 meter, 49.5; and broad-jump, 24 ft., 6 and % inches.
Tonight's final five events, the 110-meter high hurdles, the discus, the javelin, the pole vault, and the 1500 meter finale, may find Mathias hard pressed to win the White Sox Buy Mike McCormick
CHICAGO (AP)—Mike McCormick, veteran 33-year-old outfielder, has been purchased by the Chicago White Sox from Oakland of the Pacific Coast league. Frank Lane, White Sox general manager, said McCormick would report Monday.
The purchase gives McCormick his first chance in the American League after eight years and part of a ninth with Cincinnati, Boston, and New York in the National.
