Nation at Glance Georgia Elects Gov. Talmadge ATLANTA—Georgia re-elected yesterday a governor who failed to get the most votes—red-gallused, tobacco chewing Herman Talmadge. A unique county unit election system headed Talmadge toward four more years of "white supremacy" rule in an era of growing unrest over racial problems. But former Gov. M. E. Thompson, a last-ditch scrapper who refused to concede defeat, stunned many observers with his strength in yesterday's Democratic primary. Thompson held a steady lead in popular votes but that isn't what counts in Georgia—it's county unit votes. And returns from 1,179 of 1,704 precincts, and 154 of 159 counties, gave Talmadge a lead in 116 counties with 272 unit votes; Thompson led in 38 counties with 126 unit votes. Thompson's popular vote margin was 175,751 to 165,678. WASHINGTON (AP)—The house today approved the $1,010,000,000 excise tax-cutting bill, "veto proofing" it with a $433,000,000 a year boost in new levies on big corporations. But the ultimate fate of any tax reduction at all may be tied to the Korean war. WASHINGTON (AP)—The 64-year-old federal taxes on oleomargarine will vanish Saturday. Most of the price-cutting has already been done. Many manufacturers have cut yellow margarine by about 10 cents a pound within the last week or two, anticipating the end of the 10-cent federal tax on that product. They absorbed the tax themselves. So people who live in states that allow the sale of yellow margarine, and who use that product, very likely have seen the price fall in recent days, say from 41 cents a pound to 26-31 cents, or thereabouts. Consequently next Saturday they may see little or no change in the price. There have been drastic cuts in the price of white margarine, too. NEW YORK—A new selling drive hammered down stock prices today. Losses extended to an extreme of around $10 a share, declines of $2 or so a share were common place. Most of the damage was done in two intense selling bursts, one in the morning and the other in early afternoon. There was a slight comeback each time but buying power simply wasn't enough to sustain a recovery. Late in the day prices slowly settled around their lows. Brokerage quarters continued to link the heavy liquidation with developments in Korea. As usual, a flock of rumors added to the nervousness of traders. Today's more optimistic reports (Continued From Page One) Secretary of State Acheson has followed Senator Taft (R-Ohio) made that argument in a senate speech yesterday calling for Acheson's resignation. Giving permission for direct quote of his words, the president said of the Taft speech: "I think the political statement of Mr. Taft at this time is entirely uncalled for." Today's more optimistic reports from the Korean fighting apparently had eased the pressure on the administration to decide now the question of using American ground forces in Korea. The concern was that the South Korean forces, even with American air help, could not check the communist advance. A reporter said Taft claimed that Mr. Truman had reversed Acheson in his Far East action. The president replied there is not a word of truth in that. He went on to say there never was any difference within the cabinet or the armed forces over his new policy statement of Tuesday. Prior to Mr. Truman's session with newsmen, a State Department spokesman said he was surprised and disheartened that Taft "should echo the mouthings of Marcantonio and McCarthy." Secretary of State Acheson said today the communist invasion of South Korea is a "direct challenge" to the survival of the United Nations. Whether the U.N. "can survive this test will depend upon the vigor with which it answers the challenge, and the support it receives from free nations," the secretary declared. Some 1900 AFL bakers, whose absence from 21 wholesale bakeries which supply 90 per cent of the loaves sold in food stores has created a bread famine, are scheduled to vote on a wage offer. After a night-long session with a federal conciliator, the Baking Industry council offered a fiveday 40 hour week with a five cent wage increase. The union's executive committee recommended the offer be accepted in a report to rank and file members. The union membership will vote on the offer today.
