White (Continued from Page 1) ter St. Susan Tucker, vivacious owner of this shop for women specializes in smart young styles as well as a good selection for older women. We had a hard time trying to make up our minds which to choose from her wide variety of very lovely Bemberg sheers, dotted Swiss and voile that are so good for summer. There was no hurry and we sat in comfortable lounge chairs as we decided. Susan's has a sale of summer dresses going on right now. Stop in and look them over. Everyone I talked to yesterday had managed to buy a little bread by shopping early. How are you getting along? It might be a good plan to save your bread for sandwiches and whip up a hot bread at dinner time. Corn bread is an old standby with you gals from the South — no use telling you all how to make it. Perhaps the following recipe will serve as a reminder for those who have forgotten just how good cornbread can be: CORN BREAD 1 cup yellow cornmeal 1 cup sifted flour 4 tablespoons sugar 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1 cup milk ¼ cup salad oil Sift dry ingredients together into a bowl. Beat the egg until light and add milk and salad oil to the beaten egg. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add liquid all at once. Mix lightly together until almost all lumps disappear and bake in a well greased pan. BAKING POWDER BISCUITS 2 cups sifted flour 4 teaspoons baking powder ¾ teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons well chilled shortening. ¾ cup milk Mix dry ingredients together and sift three times. If you fall to do this your biscuits will have tiny black specks on top. Cut in shortening and work into the dry ingredients with the finger tips. It is blended enough when the ingredients resemble coarse cornmeal. Add almost all the milk and mix quickly to make a stiff dough. Because flours differ, it is not always possible to tell the exact amount of fluid necessary. If all the flour is not moistened, add the remainder of the milk. Toss on a lightly floured board. Knead about 30 seconds to make a smooth ball. Overkneading makes tough biscuits. Pat out to ½ inch thickness. Cut with biscuit cutter. Bake at 450 degrees from 12 to 15 minutes on a greased flat pan. Biscuits may be mixed and shaped several hours ahead and stored in the refrigerator until baking time. For variety, use tomato juice in place of milk to produce a pink biscuit of unusual flavor, or add a bit of grated cheese to the dry ingredients and mix as usual for a tangy cheese biscuit. Since we are all so interested in breads and therefore spreads to put on them, Joe Richardi of the Anaheim Safeway Store called my attention to his special on oleo-margarine. At his store you can buy colored, cubed margarine for the usual price of uncolored and not have to be bothered with the fuss of mixing it. Joe says that after July first, no more uncolored margarine will be sold and the yellow margarine will take about a ten cent drop in price. Meat prices continue to be high. Niebuhr Service Set for Monsoon Funeral services for Niebuhr, 65, whose death June 21, will be conducted at the Hilgenfeld chapel 2 p.m. Rev. R. E. Gorberim pastor of Zion church, will officiate and will be made in the cemetery. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SUNDAY LESSON TEXT "Christian Science" is day Bible Lesson sub-branches of The Mother Church of Christ, in Boston: The Gold from Isaiah: "How beat the mountains are the that bringeth good ther publisheth peace; that good tidings of good, ther eth salvation." In the following section from John's Gospel said unto Jesus, "Lord, the Father, and it superseded the mountains are the that bringeth good ther publisheth peace; that good tidings of good, ther eth salvation." In "Science and Health to the Scriptures" Mr. Eddy states: "Our Mass the sick, practised Christianity, and taught the genius its divine Principle to him but he left no definitive demonstrating this Prairie healing and preventing." The school's activities will culminate with a special program to be presented at 9:30 a.m. on July 1st. An Open House will follow. A picnic for all school employees and their parents also will be held in the final days of school. 4 tablespoons sugar 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1 cup milk ¼ cup salad oil Sift dry ingredients together into a bowl. Beat the egg until light and add milk and salad oil to the beaten egg. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add liquid all at once. Mix lightly together until almost all lumps disappear and bake in a well greased shallow pan at 425 degrees for about 20 minutes. For variety, add some cooked and crumbled bacon to the batter before you bake it. When this fragrant bread emerges from the oven, a tempting golden brown, you will be almost glad of the bread scarcity that made you try it. Split and toast some in the morning for breakfast. When it is spread generously with butter, it is a welcome change, and a nutritious one at that. A new bride takes a lot of kidding about her biscuits. Hot biscuits with jam or honey are a favorite everywhere and if a few simple rules are followed closely, anybody's biscuits will be as light as a feather. Meat prices continue to be high this week, but there is an abundant supply of summer vegetables. Ernie Harris, Alpha Beta manager, suggests that if you are cutting down on bread, you can eat more potatoes without having to worry about your waist line. Kentucky Wonder string beans in this locality are on the market now as well as the early golden bantam corn, cucumbers, yellow and Italian squash, Utah type celery and cabbage. Here is a dinner that will be low in cost and high in food value, based on good buys in Anaheim food markets this week: FAMILY DINNER MENU Baked meat loaf Scalloped potatoes SEE THE NEW SERVEL AT Sol Gas "Better Fuel for Rural Homes" HARRY I. 'CHRISTIAN SCIENCE' SUNDAY LESSON TEXT "Christian Science" is the Sunday Bible Lesson subject in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. The Golden Text is from Isaiah: "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation." In the following Scriptural selection from John's Gospel Philip said unto Jesus, "Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how savest thou then, Shew us the Father?"... the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he does the works. ... He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy states: "Our Master healed the sick, practised Christian healing, and taught the generalities of its divine Principle to his students; but he left no definite rule for demonstrating this Principle of healing and preventing disease.
