Broadway, announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Ellen, to John D. Cole of Altadena. The couple's marriage plans for a September wedding were formally announced recently as Miss Middleton stepped through the Delta Daisy Ring at the University of Redlands. This is an annual affair at the University to honor engaged women. Miss Middleton graduated from Anaheim Union high school in 1948, her major interest being in music. Upon graduation she attended the University of Redlands where she is now a junior. It was at Redlands that she met her fiance, who is a graduate both of Pasadena City college and of the University of Redlands, where he received his B.A. degree in 1949. While attending Redlands Cole served as Student Body president and was awarded national honors in speech. Upon graduation he served an appointment with the student division of UNESCO as a field delegate and toured university centers of Western Europe during the summer of 1949. Since his return last September Mr. Cole has been on a lecture tour of the colleges and universities in the western United States. Miss Middleton was recently honored with a kitchen shower in the Glendale home of one of her Redlands friends, Miss Virginia Moses. The luncheon table was unique in its appointments, in that the hostess had used cookie cutters for favors and a tea pot filled with red geraniums as a center piece. All guests present to honor the bride-to-be were her classmates at the University. Dorothy Dix YOUNG WIDOWER Youth Mistaken in Thinking He will Never Love Again DEAR MISS DIX: I am a young man of 24, a widower. I am very settled. There is a girl who loves me very dearly, who is quiet, dignified, thrifty and a good housekeeper. I admire her and enjoy her company very much, but when my wife died my heart died, too, and I feel that I cannot love this girl as she loves me. Another objection to this girl is that she is very short. I am nearly twelve inches taller than she is. Do you think if I married her we would be happy? X. X. X. ANSWER: Certainly the girl's height should be no bar to your union. As for your feeling that you have buried your heart in the grave of your first wife and that you will never be able to care for any woman again, that is the pessimism of youth.
