State Monthly Building Mark Set in May SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — All monthly records for building permits in California were broken in May, the Daily Pacific Builder reported today. The trade publication placed the total at $153,801,784, up 12.7 from April and 77 per cent above a year ago. The previous record was $149,493,409, established in March. For the first five months of 1950 the permits have totaled more than $627,000,000. This is 43.3 per cent ahead of the same period last year and 15.2 per cent above the similar period of 1948, highest year in the state's construction history. G. E. McGavran, editor of the trade journal, said seven cities already have passed their 1949 yearly totals. They are Berkeley, Culton, Harvard, Mountain View, Orange, Redding and Salinas. The Sacramento (Calif.) National Wildlife Refuge is a popular wintering ground for geese. He pays the bills for a billion-dollar business, but he can drive you stark, raving mad. He can be—and often is—a tippler, a thief or a sentimental stoon. He'll keep other guests awake—too their rooms from his overflowing bathtubs and clam them down the hall. That's one of the reasons hotel rates are high. The guest not only is paying for a room, service and convenience. He's paying for towels, ash trays and light bulbs he loads in his suitcase. He's helping repair the furniture he burns and stains. He's paying for detective service, damage suits and business lost from bad publicity. You'd think to hear them tell about it that this delegate to the 50th annual convention of the Hotel Greeters of America—the men who should know—are in the worst business in the land. Not at all. Most of them wouldn't trade their jobs and careers for any other way of living sleep and making money. Take A2 E4 Spatafora manager of the Hotel in New Orleans. He still business as a 13-year-old 46 years ago. Spatafora hand dramatically to when you mention the plans to stay in the while more. Spatafora still is ghosts, a hangover from hopping days when a character with a long to call for service himself in a sheet and if the boys from corners. Then there was the called up from a bar of the night and del Spatafora find his feet finally located them. Of course, the man the guests in their own hotels aren't like they're all very nice gates—guests themselves days also are models They admit it. CHICAGO (UP)—Fancy - fielding but little third baseman for White Sox, would like officials re-install the set up in the outfield. Warren Suggests More Interest In Government MT. VERNON, Iowa (UP)—Governor Earl Warren of California today urged young people to interest themselves in government because "in these days of fierce ideologies free government is not secure." In an address prepared for commencement exercises at Cornell college, Governor Warren declared that "as long as the seeds of hatred and tyranny and aggression are sprouting anyway, freedom everywhere is endangered. If we are to have government fashioned to our needs, we must know our government, its history, its principles, its current problems, its mechanics," he said. "I therefore make the suggestion to you ... that you interest yourselves in your government." Harvey Harman, Rutgers' head football coach, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1922. Los Angeles St. Phone: 2430 ing sleep and making a living. Take A. F. Spatafora. He's the manager of the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans. He started in the business as a 13-year-old bell boy 46 years ago. Spatafora claps his hand dramatically to his forehead when you mention troubles—but he plans to stay in the business a while more. Spatafora still is afraid of ghosts, a hangover from his bell hopping days when a seven-foot character with a long beard used to call for service, then wraps himself in a sheet and jumps out at the boys from unexpected corners. Then there was the guest that called up from a bar in the middle of the night and demanded that Spatafora find his teeth. Spatafora finally located them—in a spitoon. Of course, the managers insist the guests in their own particular hotels aren't like the others; they're all very nice. The delegates—guests themselves for four days—also are models of propriety. They admit it. CHICAGO (P)—Floyd Baker, fancy-fielding but light-hitting third baseman for the Chicago White Sox, would like to see Club officials re-install the fence they set up in the outfield at Comiskey Park in 1949 to encourage home runs. Baker collected a homer over the shortened barrier just a few days before it was removed. It was Gazette want ads bring results. GIFTS FOR FATHER – FROM McCOY'S NOW!
