Social and Club Activities Phone 2206 Girl Scout and Brownie Troops Complete 1949-50 Programs Courts of award, special trips and hikes, and overnight camping all continue to occupy attention of Anaheim Council Girl Scouts and Brownie troops as the year's program comes to a close. Lincoln Lincoln school Troop 44 entertained their mothers at a party with Florine Martínez welcoming the mothers. Diana Hallowell announced the program, with the Bunny Rabbits presenting a shadow box skit entitled "Walking at Night." Sewing badges were awarded to Janice Reynolds, Florine Martínez, Erma Leigh, Mary Louise Cowee, Myrna Sue Pharias, Louise Ralston, Barbara Ann Robertson, Veda Elliott, Diana Hallowell, Barbara Sims, Barbara Wright, Maxine Merritt, and Roberta Smith by Mrs. Jerry Schiller, acting director and special guest. Mothers present were Mrs. Eden Sims, Mrs. Elmer Wright, Mrs. Lois Peterson, Mrs. W. L. Hallowell, Mrs. Jack Leigh, Mrs. Roland Reynolds, Mrs. Charles Ralston, Mrs. James Cowee, and Mrs. W. N. Smith. Special guests were Mrs. Schiller, Mrs. Mabel Johnson, Sven Harburg and Roy Agren. Motion pictures on Mexico and the recent Juliette Low program were shown by the men guests. Jerry Dolan are leaders of Horace Mann Troop 2 which recently held a tea for the mothers in Mrs. Thiessen's home, Judy Starkweather announced the program which was opened by a baton routine by Carole Gene Stevens. Readings by Georgeann Howard and Linda Dolan, piano numbers by Carol Ann Robertson and the grand finale of group singing of "Mother, Queen of May" accompanied at the piano by Geraldine Thiessen were also included. Bette Flint, Rebecca Hernandez and Vicki Helleyer served tea and cookies to the mothers and their leaders. Mrs. Charles W. Davis, Mrs. George Howard, Mrs. Alfred Flint, Mrs. L. Starkweather, Mrs. Gene Stevens, Mrs. Carl Robertson, Mrs. Dolan and Mrs. Thiessen were mothers present. Special guests included Mrs. Florence Hallam, Georgeann Howard's grandmother; Mrs. Katherine Strassner, great-grandmother of Bette Flint and Miss Vera Manshardt, third grade teacher. Magnolia Troop 57 of Magnolia school is engrossed in much badge work this year, as well as completion of their international flag and their dance were Frances Howard DiAnn Sagan, June Thomas, Carol Haderlie, Caroline Pechter, Goldie Barchenger, Joyce Bokelman, Bewerly Moldenhauer, Junko Muraoka and Lorna Waugh. Mrs. Frank Cushing and her daughter Jackie have been special instructors in knitting for these girls who are working on their second class badges. Mrs. H. I. Barchenger is leader and Mr. Robert Thomas assists. Magnolia school Girl Scouts have also enjoyed a cook-out, and have been learning some songs and games under the tutelage of Mrs. Schiller. Knot-tying is an art taught these Intermediate Scouts by Scout Bill Husselbee. St. Boniface Troop 6 completed a project of pincushion hats for their mother recently in regular meeting at the home of their leader, Mrs. M. Dugan. Mrs. George McKool is assistant leader. Christine Siewang is scribe for these Brownie fly ups. George Washington Mrs. C. Kopfer and Mrs. Downey were leaders accompanying George Washington Troop on an outing to the new Troop Camp site on the Heniser ranch above Olive. Girls enjoyed both breakfast and lunch at the site and roamed over the countryside to explore the new area. Carol Ann Booth, Marilyn Buckner, Muriel Downey, Kathleen Kopfer, Josie Olvera and Karen Schmitt were troop members making the trip. Mrs. Schiller and Mr Norbert DeCook, program chairman accompanied them. Zion Lutheran Troop 22 of Zion Lutheran school under the leadership of Mr V. Schulz and Mrs. K. Maley recently entertained their parent and friends at an evening program demonstrating crafts, songs and dance were Frances Howard DiAnn Sagan, June Thomas, Carol Haderlie, Caroline Pechter, Goldie Barchenger, Joyce Bokelman, Bewerly Moldenhauer, Junko Muraoka and Lorna Waugh. Maley recently entertained their parent and friends at an evening program demonstrating crafts, songs and dances learned during the year. For the month of May, the son "Mother" was sung and each girl presented her mother with a gift followed by a song for the father and a gift for them. Hostesses (with their mothers) were Linda Heybrook, Ruth Steinbrink, June Reinemann, Marily Nierman, Sharon Heitshuse, Elsie Niewhoner, Arlene Gilgee Kathleen Schulz. Brownie fly-ups completed the tenderfoot requirements by demonstrating the care and folding of the flag. At an outing in Williams canyon these fly-ups worked on the outdoor requirements for Girl Scout learning the promise, the law and about the flag. Troop 31, also of Zion Lutheran school, meets at the school under the tutelage of Mrs. Troutman and Mrs. H. Meger. These girls recently went to the Heniser ranch troop site, completing their backyard camper badge. An overnight trip to the Rankd ranch was high point of the year for these Intermediate Girl Scouts. Mrs. E. Cordes transported the sleeping bags and food for the girls, accompanied by their leader and a special guest, Marie Antoine Dargatz. Benjamin Franklin Troop 37 of Benjamin Franklin school has concluded its program for the year with an entertainment honoring the mothers. Corsages made by the individual girls were presented to each mother, followed by the program with Brenda Barnett as mistress of ceremonies. Kay Eldred made the Welcome speech, and the following girls each gave a talk on what the troop has done this year: Patsy Briggs, Verlee Elliott, Lindsey Cheatum, Carol Hemken. A play entitled "The Brown Bottle" was given by Nancy Fisher Lucy Fischle, Glenda Simonton Maria Feliz, Carol Ryan and narrated by Peggy Jo Dargatz. Maley re-entertained their parent and at an evening program distributing crafts, songs and Teachers Elect, Have Meeting Members of the Elementary Teachers' club and their guests enjoyed a swiss steak dinner Tuesday evening in the Fremont cafeteria. Election of officers highlighted the business meeting that followed. Mrs. Mildred Lucas, chairman of the nominating committee presented the list of candidates to the group who chose Mrs. Dorothy Link, president; Harold Franzen, vice-president; Miss Aletha Macy, secretary and P. S. Doane, treasurer. Mr. Chester Fowler, retiring resident, who served the organization for the past two years, was appointed to the salary committee to complete the unexpired term of Miss Adah Wilcox who plans to be gone next year on a South American tour. Following the business meeting the group played ping pong, tennis, and square danced. Special guests of the club were: M. A. Gauer, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Stabbert and Mr. and Mrs. John Mary. The dinner was prepared by Mrs. Dorothy Thomas and the cafeteria staff. Tables were attractively centered with shasta daisies and calendula floral arrangements, with pastel gladioli boquets contributing to the room decorations. Teachers of the George Washington school composed the flower committee. Surprise Couple With Silver Wedding Anniversary Party A surprise party for Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bircher, Valencia ave., Placentia, on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary was held last evening at their Horace Heidt Seeks Talent Horace Heidt will bring his visual review "Stars on Parade" Original Youth Opportunity Program to the Rendezvous ballroom in Balboa July 2. The show for the benefit of the Hoag Medical hospital soon to be built Newport Beach. The Zonta of Newport Harbor will sponsor this event. Mrs. Earl Stanley identified of Zonta is general chair. Horace Heidt's Original New Opportunity program is broadcast on the Columbia Broadcast System and is made up principally of local performers who are affiliated for opportunities to appear on the network program. The managers of the program have invited talented individuals from this area to audition for show. Auditions will be held at Corona del Mar grammar school auditorium, 610 Carnation Corona del Mar, at 7:30 on Friday and 22 and 23. Auditions are open professional or amateur talent with minimum age set at 14 years old. My mama-heart swelled so big it hurt when our cat-lover, a girl and seven years old, decided to give away her beloved kitty because her brother "belongs to a bird club and needs birds that aren't nervous from a cat." She isn't doing very well learning to read words . . . just hearts. (Oh, yes, ma'am, sometimes they fight and holler and I scream at 'em). Refreshments included cake and punch. Gifts included many silver items, appropriate to the day. Public Invited To Flag Day Program at Elks Anaheim Elks will present their annual Flag Day program next Wednesday evening, June 14 at 8 p.m. The history of the United States flag will be told by Leo Friis, assisted by Boy and Girl Scouts of Northern Orange county. Music will be furnished by Edith Schuman, soloist and Olive Kempin, organist. Officers of the lodge will present their special ritual, honoring the flag and Ross Laird will give a short appropriate address. A cordial invitation to attend this Flag Day observance has been extended to the public by the Elks. Patriotic organizations have especially been invited to attend. Shredded cabbage is delicious in a molded salad. Use lemon gelatin as the base and serve with salad dressing. enjoying a number of activities, other than formal meetings, which feature devotions and refreshments. Miniature golfing is scheduled for June 23 for members of the organization and the group has also planned a family night, Saturday, June 17, to provide an opportunity for families of the community. Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of bay rum . . . We've been to sea! On the good ship "The Sportsman" we cruised from Patterson's landing, Newport, to Avalon Bay, Catalina. "Twas our first ocean voyage (except for the Mister's European tour, courtesy Uncle Sam) and we loved every minute of it . . . What a grand outing for a family or for just you and someone you like. "The Sportsman" is the only passenger boat making the daily round trip to Catalina from Orange County. The Captain's personality equals the power of the diesels that move the ship. Gee Whiz! Indiana st. was recently elected vice-president of the Costa Del Naranjas Federation of Luther Leagues at a Spring Rally held at Newport Harbor church. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Robinson and family of Los Alamitos, will make their home at 1112 E. Lincoln ave., within the next two weeks. Miss Toni Eldred, 314 E. Wilhelmina, will leave next week for Vermont, where she will enter nurses training in the fall. Driving with her will be her mother, Mrs. Mae Eldred. Mr. and Mrs. George Dunkin, 8181 Ventura st., celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary today. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Welch, of Mount Sterling, Iowa, are the house guests of Mr. and Mrs. P. Start New Red Cross Canteen Class Monday A new Red Cross canteen class will convene at the Ebell Club house, Monday afternoon, June 12 starting at 1 and continuing until 4. The three sessions of the class, meeting on the 12, 19 and 26 will be under the direction of Mrs. Louise Thomas. FROG IN HIS THROAT NATHANYA, Israel (UP)—Simha Lev has learned to keep his mouth shut. He learned the hard way, while installing sanitary fittings in a new house in Nathanya. As usual, Lev was working with his mouth open. A little frog leaped into it and lodged in his windpipe.
