Plan Summer Recreation Program For All Age Groups
Summer recreational activities aplenty, sufficient to satisfy nearly every sporting demand, are scheduled to commence with the closing of school, according to a report from City Recreation Director Don Derr.
Juvenile Leagues, featuring baseball, swimming, basketball, track, rifle shooting and touch football, get underway June 19.
Sponsored by the local merchants, the activities are open to boys eight through 14 who live in the Anaheim Union High School district. Activities start daily at 10 a.m. in the City Park.
A typical day would include baseball in the morning and basketball and swimming in the afternoon.
Leagues will consist of two divisions, one for boys 12 and under and the other for those 13 through 14. Team uniforms will be issued during the second week of competition.
Trophies for winning teams and individuals who maintain high sportsmanship records will be given at the close of the summer activities.
Prospective participants should sign up with Deer as soon as school closes.
Thursday nights throughout the summer will be given over to roller skating. Place is City Park tennis courts. Music and supervision will be provided by the recreation department.
Instruction in various activities is also on the summer slate. Tennis class lessons for children under junior high age will commence June 26 at City Park under the direction of Mrs. Bob Williams. Sign-up time is June 19 at City Park Recreation Office.
Red Cross-trained instructors will be on hand to run swimming classes which begin at the City Park plunge as soon as school ends. A ten cent fee will admit swimmers five and over to the classes which are scheduled throughout the entire morning. Towels will be provided.
At the high school, intermediate and advanced classes, plus diving and life saving, will be conducted by AUHS staffers.

Sightseers will travel by chartered school bus. Cost for this particular trip is $1.25 per person. Other trips this summer will aim at Kaiser Steel Mills in Fontana and Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
Handicraft enthusiasts begin creating on June 26. The daily afternoon classes contemplate work in ceramics, textile painting, lanyard weaving, scrap craft and copper-tooling. Small fees for materials will admit crafters to the classes. Women instructors will aid in the courses which have been set up primarily for girls.

Sixteen home owners share $130 worth of merchandise certificates following judging of the Yard Beautification contest last week. Contest was staged by the Anaheim chamber of commerce city beautification committee, John Ganahl, charman.
Judges, Mrs. John Craddock and Mrs. S. K.
