Church Loop Ups Schedule
Church Leaguers step up their softball schedule to three double headers a week, adding a pair of games on Tuesday night to the regular Monday-Thursday menu, as of this week. The three night barrage will continue until July, at which time the two-a-week slate will be resumed.
Tonight's double feature includes Calvary Baptist and Zion Lutheran in the 7:30 opener and Evangelical United Brethren and St. Michael's in the finale.
Zion Lutheran is the only team on tonight's schedule credited with a notch in the win column. The Lutherans won by default last Monday when St. Michael's didn't show for a scheduled match.
The Brethren have bowed to Bethel Baptist and the Calvary Baptists to the Presbyterians in previous games. The week's schedule:
**Tuesday**
- Church of Christ vs. St. Boniface.
- Grace Lutheran vs. Calvary Baptist.
**Thursday**
- Bethel Baptist vs. Zion Lutheran.
- Presbyterian vs. St. Michael's.

He's 31 years old. Hank Sauer is the league's runs-batted-in pace-setter, with 36. He's also 31. Andy Pafko is tops in home runs with eight. He's 29. And then there's 33-year-old Phil Cavarretta, who is hitting .328 and doing a grand job at first base in his 17th big league season.
On the pitching side, Johnny Schmitz, Dutch Hiller and Walt Dubiel, all past 28, have won 10 games among them, or more than half of the team's total of 19.
And the youngsters? Well, there are only six left: Outside of Bob Borkowski, who hasn't played much, not one is hitting .300.
Edwards, Cavarretta, Sauer and Pafko all had a hand in yesterday's 13-8 triumph over Brooklyn that dropped the Dodgers into a first place tie with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards gained a full game by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2.
Edwards batted in four runs with two doubles and a single. Cavarretta smacked two singles and his second home run. Sauer tied Bob Elliott of Boston for the league's runs-batted-in leadership by driving in a tally. Pafko got a couple of hits and two walks in five times at bat.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Sugar Ray Robinson, king of the world's welterweights, goes after another title tonight in a 15-round bout with the "indestructible" Frenchman Robert Villemain.

Wakefield Hot In Oak Debut
By Jim Hubbart
Associated Press Sports Writer
If there are any doubts today as to whether Mr. Dick Wakefield's intentions are honorable, one has merely to look at the happy bride in the case, namely, the Oakland Acorns.
When Mr. Wakefield and Oakland were joined together at gunpoint last month, somebody asked him if he intended to work for Charley Dressen's crew or simply loll in the sun and cash paychecks.
Yesterday, Wakefield gave his answer. He completed his first assignment for his Pacific Coast League employers, by whacking two singles in two trips to the plate and driving in two runs.
Oakland lost the game, 11 to 8, to the powerful San Diego Padres. The Acorns took the nightcap, however, 7 to 3, and that conquest dropped San Diego out of first place.
Wakefield enered the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth and played left field in the top of the ninth. He didn't perform in the finale, but his showing in the opener indicated he may be in for some steady employment.
The NBA says the winner that New York fight must be the winner of the Robinson-Villemain bout within 90 days or feit his NBA-recognized title.
Robinson and Villemain, regaled by the NBA as the logical challengers, have repeatedly bid title bouts with La Motta, but Bronx Bull has turned them down.
Now La Motta is matched with Rocky Graziano, former midweight champ, for an NBA-sanctioned title go at New York J28.
The NBA says the winner that New York fight must be the winner of the Robinson-Villemain bout within 90 days or feit his NBA-recognized title.
Robinson is a prohibitive favorite to win tonight's match, Villemain has plenty of backers.
The squat Frenchman stands only five feet six—has never been knocked out and in fights has hit the canvas once.
On the other hand, Robinson the kind of boxer who hits and often and most of the sends his rival down for the count. The Harlem Sugar knocked out his opponent in 111 fights.
The Frenchman, at 26, is years younger than Robinson. Lemain is expected to scale
Van Hoorebeke, Ex-Oiler, named Colonist Grid Coach
Clare Van Hoorebeke, grid coach at North Phoenix High School, will take over as head coach of the Anaheim varsity football team next September. The appointment came after a final meeting of the high school board of trustees Saturday afternoon.
Immediately following the meeting, at which trustees were Louis Tsoutsouvas, the top contender for the high school principal Paul Lee phoned Van Hoorebeke enix and told him of the Van Hoorebeke acceptedately. His salary will be approximately $4400 a year, Demid.

Van Hoorebeke has been using a split T formation at Phoenix. However he will survey his Anaheim charges before laying down any definite strategy, he told Glover last week. The Colonists are used to a variable single-wing type of play.
What the new coach decides for his varsity men will probably go for the Colonist lightweight squad as well. Glover said today.
Saturday's appointment brought to a close several weeks of screening and interviewing by trustees. All in all, some 30 or 40 applications were made for the job. Principal Demaree screened candidates before presenting them to the board of trustees.
Glover served in an advisory capacity during the interviews.
Prior to Saturday's meeting, Van Hoorebeke and Tsoutsouvas were tabbed as the most likely candidates for the position.
Bob Musick, former USC grid star, now winding up coaching chores at Ventura Junior College, was also being considered for the job. However, word came late last week that Musick had accepted a job at Santa Maria high school.
Van Hoorebeke will alternate teaching with his coaching at Anaheim high school. According to Demaree, the new mentor will teach math and freshman orientation in addition to his duties on the gridiron.

After graduating from Huntington Beach high school, Van Hoorebeke attended Arizona State Teachers College at Tempe. There he starred in the dual role of quarterback and end on the gridiron. He picked up three letters each in football and baseball. He was football team captain in his senior year.
In 1939 he joined the coaching staff of the newly created North Phoenix high school. That first year, the Mustangs won one and lost six. The next three years in a row they were tabbed by Arizona newspapers as state high school champions, the scribes' picks taking the place of championship play-offs such as are held in other states.
Van Hoorebeke was with the Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1947. As B-29 observer, he attained the rank of captain.
He returned to North Phoenix in 1947 where he coached fresh football and basketball and varsity baseball.
During the past season, he was a member of the varsity coaching staff.
Van Hoorebeke is married and has one child.
Three of the five high school trustees attended Saturday's meeting. They included C. Arthur Shipkey, Everett Cone and Henry Walsworth. Absent were trustees Baker and Cawthorne.
Demaret Happy Over U.S. Open Prospects at Merion Course
ARDMORE, Pa. (A)—Colorful Jimmy Demaret looked over the Merion Golf Club course today and commented: "This course gives me the best chance I've ever had of winning the U.S. Open."
Golf's fashion plate from Ojai, Calif., was enthusiastic about the 6694 yard par 70 layout.
"If I'm ever going to win an open title, brother, this is the place that was built for me to do it."
Demaret quickly explained that he wasn't counting the course as easy. "Far from that, it's a real tough course. But I notice that the premium here is on accurate driving. That's my game."
"The wild golfer would do better to stay home from this tournament," Demaret said. "It's easy to see that there is no recovery from a bad shot. You have to be true from the tee to the green or you'll be licked before the putt."
Demaret said he wasn't particularly afraid of the greens, which host pro Fred Austin claims will trip more than one top flight title contender.
"I don't think the roll is too severe on the greens," Jimmy said.
"They look flat to me."
He may be in for a big surprise if the weather is clear and the course has dried out from recent rains.
Austin insists that on a fair day the Merion greens will be like billiard tables.
The golfer who hopes to score will have to be better than a good putter.
