TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE
50 'Rat Packers' Held in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fifty youths arrested in the past two days are suspected of being rat pack hoodlums, police and sheriff's deputies reported today.
Twenty members of three juvenile gangs, some armed with crude home-made pistols, were picked up near an East Los Angeles church bazaar. Frank Marquez, 47, bar owner, was attacked and kicked by four hoodlums.
Lennox deputies arrested a 15 year old boy they said admitted hitting a girl and her escort with a lead pipe. The boy's father told officers, "I can't handle him. He once threatened me with a knife."
Deputies searching for youths who beat a woman near Puente arrested five Mexican nationals hiding in a barn. Lacking work permits and unable to speak English, the five are held for immigration authorities.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Draft inductions may be necessary soon, says the nation's Selective Service director, because military enlistments have been slumping. Maj. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey said yesterday that manpower experts in Washington are worrying about the recruiting slump. He was here inspecting the selective service organization.
However, Gen. Hershey said no inductions will be ordered until after Congress has taken action on extending the peacetime draft law beyond June. 24.
BLYTHE (AP)—The first of this season's 2000 carload crop of melons has rolled out of Palo Verde valley. Cantaloupes are being harvested now and the first watermelons will be shipped out Thursday. Cantalopes were quoted at $8 and $9 a crate, with the buyer paying freight charges.
California voters will use 18,924 precincts in the June 6 direct primary election. That's the largest number in the state's history, the Secretary of State's office says.
