Anaheim Netmen Gain Semis With 17-7 Win Over Ventura
Anaheim’s tennismen gained entry to CIF semi-finals yesterday as they traveled to Ventura and handed their hosts a 17-7 setback in quarter-final action.
Sequel to yesterday’s win will occur some time next week, Coach Bill Cook said this morning, when the Colonists entertain a Montebello squad in Anaheim. Exact date will be determined in the near future.
A victory over Montebello would mark the locals as tops in their division of the CIF Central Section and would line them up against the best of the San Diego-Santa Monica-San Bernardino combo in a final fray which decides the Southern California champion.
Colonists collected 11 singles points and six doubles points in yesterday's round-robin match with Ventura. Bottger, Helsing and Hersh racked up clean sweeps in singles competition.
The results: Singles: Bottger (A) def. Osborn 6-3, Maxwell 6-0, and Sutherland 6-2. Middleton (A) def. Hardy 6-3, Osborn 6-1, lost to Sutherland 3-6; Helsing (A) def. Sutherland 6-4, Hardy 6-3 and Maxwell 6-2; Hersh (A) def. Osborn 6-4, Maxwell 6-3 and Hardy 6-0.
Doubles: Marshall and Webb (A) def. Hartman and Voris 6-3, 6-0, lost to Perley and Hertel 1-6, 0-6; Sousa and Wright (A) def. Hartman and Voris 6-1, 6-1, lost to Perley and Hertel 3-6, 0-6.

Williams Shoots For Fences and Bambino’s Mark
By JOE REICHLER
Associated Press Sports Writer
“Shifts or no shifts, I’ll always be shooting for those fences.”
The speaker? Who else but Ted Williams, the center of the American League, in more ways than one.
Williams never has said so publicly but what baseball’s top slugger wants most—next to seeing his Boston Red Sox win a pennant—is to break Babe Ruth’s record of 60 home runs in one season.
Williams already has reached the magic .400 batting figure. He’s already won the batting title, not once but three times. He’s already gained the most valuable player award.
This year he’s setting his sights on 61 home runs. With 11 four baggers in Boston’s first 28 games, who is there to say Williams won't break the Bambino's most coveted record? Remember also that Ted missed seven games because of illness. Breaking it down, Williams has averaged better than one homer every two games.
“I’m being paid to hit homers,” Williams once said when he was chided for not trying to break up the shift by hitting more to left, “Four little singles in a game is great, but home runs and winning ball games are greater.”
Ted and his slugging mate, Vern Stephens, each slammed two homers yesterday to account for all Boston’s runs as the Red Sox defeated Detroit, 6-1.

Rock Confident As La Motta Bout Looms
BUFFALO, N. Y. (AP)—Rocky Graziano is virtually certain of a shot at the middleweight crown which he says he "just loaned" to Jake Lamotta "for a little while."
Graziano knocked out Buffalo's Henry Brimm last night in the fourth round in a fight that was widely viewed as a tuneup for a title match with La Motta in Madison Square Garden June 14.
Rocky told newsmen "This fight was just what I needed. I've really got the confidence I need.
"As far as I'm concerned I just loaned the title to Jake for a little while.
"I'll have it back the next time I walk out of the ring."
