Irrigation and Tillage Two Most Important Factors Affecting Size of Oranges Two of the most important controllable factors affecting the size of oranges are irrigation and tillage, reports Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg of the University of California Agricultural Extension Service. This is indicated by a survey conducted under the supervision of J. C. Johnston, extension specialist of the College of Agriculture, with the assistance of various farm advisors in the southern part of the state. 100 Orchards Studies of 100 orchards in Orange county conducted by the agricultural extension service showed that the average size ranged from 200 near the pipeline to 344 at the end of the run. In Riverside county it was found that a difference of two packing sizes between the head of the irrigation run and the foot of the run. These results do not necessarily indicate a need for more irrigation water, but suggest that more attention be given to distribution of the water. Poor tilth of soil seemed to be a characteristic of many orchards reporting smaller sizes of oranges. Evidently, poor tilth went hand in hand with failure of the water to make proper penetration. Often the condition of poor tilth seemed to be a result of excessive tillage. Age of Trees Age of trees, pruning, cover cropping, and nitrogen application, apparently had no decisive effect on size. Further research on the effect of potash applications, Ed Wright Wins Optimists’ Trophy Ed Wright won the Optimist’ trophy at last night’s Toastmasters meeting. Further research on the effect of potash applications, oil sprays, and pruning are needed to determine if they affect size. The Citrus Experiment Station and the Extension Service of the College of Agriculture will continue studies of the problem.
