PIONEER AD WRITER—Oscar Renner (right), co-owner of the SQR Store checks the advertisement that appeared in Tuesday's GAZETTE with Neil Stanley, advertising manager. Renner wrote the first "price" ad to appear on the pages of the Gazette 55 years ago.—Gazette Photo. Oscar Renner, co-owner of the SQR Department Store SQR Store Owner Writes First Price Ad for Gazette in 1895 "Dry goods, clothing, boots and shoes." That was the copy carried in the advertisements of the S. S. Federman Dry Goods Store on the pages of the Anaheim Gazette week-in and week-out. Oscar Renner, co-owner of the SQR Department Store, who then was getting his start in the merchandise field, felt that printed "prices" would touch the fancy of the buying public. His departure from the established mean was not too well received by his boss, Mr. Federman whose store was located on the northwest corner of Los Angeles and Center streets. But after due persuasion he finally consented and the pages of the Gazette carried their first "price" ads. It marked the beginning of an era—the era of modern advertising and bringing competition from the store counter to the pages of the newspaper and of merchants reaching their customers before they even came in the store. In time Renner along with Messrs. Quartan and Schumacher brought Federman out and established their own store. It was located on the southwest corner of Los Angeles and Center streets. They moved to the present location on Center and Lemon streets in 1930. Assisting Mr. Renner in the management of the store and his parter, is Mrs. August Schumacher, widow of the late founding partner. GLIDES 6000 FEET Leo Valentin, former French paratrooper, turns over on his back as he glides earthward on his canvas wings after dropping from a plane 7,500 feet over the Meaux airport, 20 miles from Paris. Valentin changed directions twice in his glide before pulling parachute ripcord at 1,500 feet. He wrenched his shoulders and bloodied his face when his goggles broke during glide. He intends to keep practicing until he can perfect both wings and technique. HIGH-FLYING CHAMPION — Nancy Lee Parker, twice national senior woman roller figure skating champion, demonstrates acrobatic form in a training session at Detroit. SPORTS Kiner Bashes Homers 6, 7 PITTSBURGH, May 10, (AP)—Pittsburgh's Ralph Kiner has emerged from a brief slump to start baseball records spinning at. serve notice that he is on his way to a new major league home run record. Kiner bashed out home runs No. 6 and 7 last night to put him three ahead of his homer count at the same time last year. That scuttled the Brooklyn Dodgers 10-5. The two home runs—one a grand slam—drove in seven runs and gave Kiner the National League lead in home runs and in runs batted in with 20. Ralph's final 1949 total was 54 home runs—six below Babe Ruth's all-time high of 60 in a season. Ralph has a total of eight grand slam homers in five seasons in the majors to tie a modern mark. And he is off a running to top his own National League record of four grand slammers in a season, last year. He's also poled what he and the experts think is the longest clout of his career. He bopped an offering from Cincinnati's Kent Peterson over the Forbes Field scoreboard on April 22, a distance of more than 500 feet. Twinks Serve 5-0 Notice on Angel Crew By The Associated Press The Hollywood Stars, 1949 Pacific Coast League champions, apparently are not in the mood to be mauled further by their cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Angels. They demonstrated as much in their series opener last night. Two weeks ago the Angels beat them five out seven. But in their latest effort, the Stars proceeded to whitewash their neighbors 5-0. Chuck Stevens' three-run homer in the first inning was more than enough. Plenty of credit goes to hurler Glen Moulder. He restricted the Angels to four hits, all singles, and allowed only two runners to get as far as second base. The Angels apparently lost their hard-hitting Clarence Maddern for a few days. He twisted his neck batting in the third and became so dizzy he had to be helped off the field. He refused hospitalization and was sent home. His ailment was diagnosed as cerebral anemia. COMPTON SLAUGHTERS U. OF MEXICO COMPTON, May 10 (AP)—The University of Mexico track squad didn't fare so well against the powerful Compton college Tartars. The visitors managed to take one first place last night, Jorge Roman annexing the two-mile in 10:32.8. Compton won the meet 113 to 18. THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1950—YOU ARE INVITED TO THE ANAHEIM A 114 E. In a spring training accident Kiner sprained his magic right wrist, credited with providing his unusual power. It apparently was a minor injury, but it perceptibly curbed the big fellow's hitting. His average dropped to .220. His recent batting surge lifted it to .266. Kiner says his wrist is healed now, although he still wears tape.
