The call is out for full or partial teams as well as individual enthusiasts, Derr said. KRAMER NOTCHES 89th WIN SPRINGFIELD, Mo. May 9 — Jack Kramer continued his mastery over Richard (Pancho) Gonzales in their extended professional tennis tour as he scored his 89th win in 114 matches, 6-3, 18-16, last night. AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR ALL CROSLEY PRODUCTS STARMER PLBG. Phone 4824 747 N. Los Angeles St — Anaheim— If team support means anything the Grace Lutherans softballers are a cinch to cop their fourth straight church league crown. 225 Grace Lutheran backers turned out last night at the church on Palm street to launch their boys' 1950 season with a benefit supper designed to provide the champ with new equipment. Participants gabbed and gorged from 6 to 8 p.m. at the feast sponsored by the Church Brotherhood. Official arrangers were Emil Heinze and Art Altheide. But support or no, the Grace Lutherans look good in the coming series. Player-manager Fred Liebi boasts a tentative squad of 17 men, 13 of whom are seasoned diamond warriors. Returnees to the roster this year are outfielders Paul Altheide, Johnny Westerhold, Bud Saliben, Pat Crawford and Don Maurhan; infielders Delt Martens, Bill Geiger, Bob Hedrick, Boyd Johnson and Art Michel; pitchers Art Altheide and Westerhold, and catcher Adolph Westerhold. Manager Liebi is on as a utility player. New names on the list include Reverend Harry F. Stieb, pitcher; Jimmy Mack and Herb Heinze, infielders; and Erland Eberhard, outfielder. Grace Lutherans hold high hopes for Art Altheide and Del Martens who spoke softly and carried big sticks in last year's diamond doings. Both batted better than .330 in 1949. The champs will be without the services of ace flinger Lefty Han-sen this year. Hansen, who lives in Santa Ana, was barred by a new ruling which makes only Anaheim church members eligible. The Grace Lutherans' one outing this year netted them one defeat. In a practice game April 8, Kwikset squad sent them home on the short end of a 7-4 count. Manager Liebi says his boys are open to any and all offers for pre-season practice games. Man contact is Art Altheide. Mexico Racers In Last Laps MEXICO CITY, May 9 — Drivers in the border to border race headed into isolated southeast Mexico today for the final two laps. Reports were scarce as they got farther from telephone lines. William W. Sterling, of El Paso Texas, was back in the lead according to unofficial totals, with a 17 minute margin over Thomas A. Deal, also El Paso. Both are driving stock 1950 Cadillacs. Lou Figaro, Inglewood, Cali crashed. Figaro and co - drive Dempsey Wilson suffered cuts. SOL GAS "Better Fuel for Rural Homes" HARRY I. HORN CO. On 101 Hiway Between Anaheim and Pullerton CERTIFIED GAS APPLIANCES Box-Wise PCL Chiefs Offer Coffin Report in Battle Against TV By JIM HUBBART Associated Press Sports Writer Pacific Coast League club owners have some new and lethal ammunition today in their battle to exterminate what they call the No. 1 crowd killer, television. The first available 1950 figures on baseball video audiences were released yesterday, the report is amazing. In many respects it's frightening—unless you're in the television business. For example: The Los Angeles-San Diego series at Wrigley Field April 4-8 drew 102,057 week-day onlookers, only 4.6 per cent of whom were actually at the ballpark. The figures are from the current tele-que report on the Los Angeles television audience, published by Coffin, Cooper & Clay, Inc. It is compiled in much the same way as radio's Hooper rating. In fact, clubowners already are calling it the "Coffin rating," for reasons obvious. The Coffin measurements treat only of telecasts in the Los Angeles area, but might also be of interest to San Francisco, the west coast's second video hotspot. Here are some of the findings: A Sunday doubleheader between Portland and Hollywood April 2 appeared on about 173,300 TV sets. The crowd at Gilmore Field numbered 9269 paid. The April 8 twin bill between the Angels and Padres lured only 2083 through the turnstiles. But 232,300 citizens saw it on television. The TV audience on week nights for that series averaged 97,300. Attendance at the park average 4757. PCL clubs resume hostilities tonight, meeting by decree of an oddly concocted schedule, the same foes they met two weeks ago. Harrison Nabs State Open FRESNO, Calif., May 9 (AP) — Musky E. J. (Dutch) Harrison, warming up for the westen open in Los Angeles next week, added the California state open championship today to his list of golfing titles. The affable Little Rock traveler, a 15-year man in the professional ranks, beat out Ellsworth Vines and Jack Gage, both of Los Angeles, in a triple playoff yesterday. They had tied over the regular 12 holes with 282. Harrison toured the stiff, hilly Fort Washington course with a sparkling 36-31-67, live under par of 36-36-72. Vines carded a 34-35-69 and Gage was wobbly with 37-37-74. Vines took a two stroke advantage over Harrison and three shots on Gage on the first nine. He gained the margin with a 70-yard wedge shot for an eagle 2 on the 323 yard fifth hole. But Harrison got red hot on the back nine. He tanked a 45-yard off-the-green-putt for an eagle 3 on the 519-yard 12th hole and squared the card with Vines sink-ing an eight-foot putt. Musial Hits .453 so far, Eyes 4th Title NEW YORK. Catcher Garagiola of the Cards is with .378. Dodger Jackie Robinson, year's batting champion is at .356. Two points below is Jethroe, negro rookie outfielder of the Boston Braves. PCL clubs resume hostilities tonight, meeting by decree of an oddly concocted schedule, the same foes they met two weeks ago. Two are cross-town rivalries—Oakland at San Francisco and Los Angeles at Hollywood. Sure fire crowd pleasers in the pre-TV era, these intramural arrangements are suffering this season at the box office. Attendance figures in their previous meetings this year show a considerable drop from 1949. Boxing Disputes Ended in Houston Houston School Board today abolished boxing matches as a means of settling schoolboy disputes. Dr. Henry A. Petersen said that although boxing is recognized as a sport the schools are responsible for the children and that no other sport places such emphasis on knocking the opponent unconscious. Dr. C. M. Taylor suggested the board would face this problem from children if boxing gloves are removed; "They'll settle their arguments with rocks." Merle Asper Selected as NROTC Alternate Merle Willis Asper, Jr., of 419 East Cypress, Anaheim, has been named by the Bureau of Naval Personnel as one of the 450 alternate candidates for the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. This group was selected from 25,000 high school seniors or graduates who applied for the program last fall. Applicants participated in the Naval college aptitude test last December and some 7400 were certified. Those physically qualified were considered by a selection committee of the state or territory of the applicant's legal residence. State quotas were apportioned on a percentage basis of male high school graduates in each state during 1948. In addition to the 1800 civilians, 200 candidates were selected from the Fleet for the NROTC program. Rolfe's Hustling Bengals Gain American Chiefs' Awe Rival big league managers are beginning to talk about Red Rolfe's hustling Detroit Tigers with a great deal of respect. Baseball men who previously had regarded the Tigers as "just another first division club," are openly giving the Bengals a good chance to win the American League flag. Casey Stengel, skipper of the New York Yankees is the latest to climb aboard the Detroit bandwagon. Not that he thinks his Yankees won't repeat. "Detroit is the best looking club we've faced thus far," he said yesterday following the Tigers' 7-1 triumph over his world champions. "They're going to be tough, you can bet on that. Houtteman, 22-year-old right-hander blanked the Yanks for eight innings, but let up in the ninth after his mates had given him a 7-0 lead. It was his fourth triumph against only one loss. The Tigers today were leading the league. Although tied with Boston in games won and lost, the Tigers lead the Red Sox by 64 percentage points. They've won 10 of 14 starts while the Sox have won 13 of 20. Compton Hosts U. of Mexico COMPTON, May 9, (FP)—The Compton College track squad plays host to the University of Mexico here tonight on the Ramsaur stadium oval. The Tartars will be heavily favored in this third annual meeting with Mexico. Arriving here last week with a small assemblage of 15 performers, Mexico will be weakened by the absence of Carlos Monges, Alberto Vera and Aleandro Bobadilla — national champions in the 400 meters, javelin and 1500 meters, respectively. They stayed home with their books. Top Linksters Ready for Western Open "Golf Goes Western." Bowling Congress Shaken Over Race Question COLUMBUS, O., May 9 (AP) — An internal battle over its white male membership restriction is about to shake the 50-year-old American bowling congress to its foundations. That was the consensus today as the grapevine whispered the results of last night's opening confab of the ABC executive directors. The big fight—and everyone seems certain there will be one—is scheduled Friday. About 400 delegates from all parts of the U.S. and Canada have the power to overrule or refuse to approve any actions of the directors. The big question was whether the newly phrased "open to all" membership regulation could muster a majority vote Friday. One southern director was quoted as telling the others: "We had to leave the north once before. Maybe we'll have to do it again."
