One-Act Play Tournament Starts
In Santa Ana at Ebell Clubhouse
The Ebell Clubhouse in Santa Ana will be the headquarters of Southland theater patrons this weekend as the 24th annual Southern California Tournament of One-Act Plays is presented Wednesday through Saturday nights.
The Santa Ana Community Players will present an entry list of 19 plays, with the program each night starting at 8 p.m. The climax Saturday night will feature presentation of awards, highlighted by four small ceramic statuettes dubbed "Modjeskas"—in keeping with Hollywood's "Oscars" for outstanding talent.
Modjeskas"
Santa Ana's Modjeskas are becoming a tradition to perpetuate the memory of Mme. Helenz Modjeska, the great Polish tragedienne who claimed Orange county as her home during the last year's of her life. Designed by Kay Finch of Corona del Mar, the figurines will go to the best actor and actress, and best supporting players.
Fullerton, Orange, Tustin and Newport Harbor high schools opened the competition Wednesday evening, with a separate set of prizes. Thursday will present Josephine Dillon's Valley of Hobby Players of North Hollywood, in addition to plays by groups from Van Nuys, Glendale, Laguna Beach and Coronado.
Friday Bill
The Friday bill includes the Covina Little Theatre, the Valley Community Theater of Claremont, the Kensington Junior Players of San Diego and a group from Pacific Beach.
The Manhattan Players from Manhattan Beach open the six-play program Saturday night, followed by the Theater Americans of Altadena, the San Pedro Theater Arts, La Mesa Town and Country Players, the Kensington Senior Players and the Footlighters of Redlands.
Tickets are on sale at the Santa Ana Book Store, KImberly 20230.
Gladys Simpson Shafer is tournament director. Judges are Walter Prill of Orange Coast college, Harold Turney of Los Angeles
