Bonar, music instructor for Fullerton Union high school and Junior college, in connection with the University of Southern California Orchestra and Instrumental ensembles, has orchestrated Contrapunctus XX of "The Art of the Fugue" by Johann Sebastian Bach, an enormous unfinished work never previously presented. Performance of Mr. Bonar's score was given last week in Boyard auditorium on the university campus by the University of Southern California orchestra under the direction of Ingolf Dahl. Bach, master of intricate counterpoint, composed for the harpsichord and the organ, making orchestration of his work a problem of patience and skill. Bonar's work with Contrapunctus XX presents unusual difficulties in that it is unusually long and, interrupted by the composer's death, various voices and abruptly on whatever note the score was abandoned. In the composition the composer seemed to be signing his name to his work for the last theme is based on the tones B-A-C-H. On the original script appears the note in the handwriting of his son, Phillip Emanuel Bach: "Working on this fugue, at the point where the name 'BACH' is applied in the countersubject, the composer died."
