This visit of a man who spent all of his active ministry in Japan is especially interesting to Episcopalians during this Lenten season because the total Mite Box offering of the Episcopal church is going in 1950 to this important mission field.
Among Bishop Reifsnider's many other positions and honors in the land of his active ministry were the presidency of St. Paul's University, Tokyo; the directorship of St. Luke's International Medical Center; and the third and fourth Orders of the Sacred Treasure with which he was decorated by the Emperor of Japan in 1928 and 1941 respectively.
At 9:30 the young people will look forward to a continuation from Bishop Reifsnider of the fascinating anecdotes and description of life in Japan given them by Mr. Paul Demaree last Sunday. The 11 a.m. congregation, having still in their minds the memory of the inspiring radio address given by the Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill, will look forward to a gripping message from a man who served his whole life on what is truly one of the Christian frontiers.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

Boston, Massachusetts, delivered a lecture entitled "Christian Science: The Discovery which Solves Today's Problems," last Sunday evening, under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Anaheim, in High School Auditorium.

The lecturer spoke substantially as follows:
I am sure if any of us here were asked to answer the question, "What is the greatest need of mankind in these days?" that after some thoughtful consideration and discussion we would all reach the conclusion that our greatest need is to gain a more comprehensive understanding of God.
The entire history of the human race shows plainly that envy and selfishness have been the underlying cause of most of the world's troubles. Basically, the reason mortals look to material sources or to the material possessions of others for their supply is that they are ignorant of the unlimited good which God is constantly giving to all of His children. Without the fear that there may not be enough to go around, there would never be any reason for covetousness. This fear emanates from ignorance of the true source or Principle of all good, ignorance of God and of His abundant provision for all of His children.
Someone may be thinking, But it is true, is it not, that some nations and some individuals are enjoying prosperity and abundance while others are poverty-struck and in dire need of almost everything that makes human living harmonious. Yes, this does seem to be true, but Christ Jesus came to teach us how to eliminate human misery by understanding that God is Love and the supplier of all our needs.
When a gathering of five thousand people was hungry and there were only five loaves and two fishes available, Jesus so clearly realized the ever-presence of true substance that there was sufficient food for all and twelve basketfuls remained after the multitude was satisfied.
The Bible Gives the Solution
Thinking men and women readily agree that human warfare, material schemes, and regimentation have fallen far short of bringing any satisfactory solution for the complex problems of these times. Obviously, then, the answer must be found in the spiritual realm, and it is stated with amazing clarity in a simple, inspired verse in Romans (12:2): "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge."
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Every object in material thought will be destroyed, but the spiritual idea, whose substance is in Mind, is eternal." "The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience—Spirit possessing all power, filling all space, contradict forever the belief that matter can be actual."

How Does Christian Science Heal?
THE DISAPPEARANCE of organic and functional disease, as well as of trouble in other forms, is continually recorded among those who have turned to Christian Science for help.
The method of such overcoming of difficulty is prayer—a spiritually scientific manner of thinking based on the teaching of Christ Jesus.
What this prayer is and how anyone can understand it and use it effectually in accordance with his need are fully explained in the Christian Science textbook,
SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures
by Mary Baker Eddy
This remarkable book, other works by Mrs. Eddy, and all other authorized Christian Science literature may be read, borrowed, or purchased at the Christian Science Reading Room, 125 N. Philladelphia, Anaheim, California.
Open to the public at the following hours: 11 A. M. to 4 P. M., First Church of Christ, Science.
Thinking men and women readily agree that human warfare, material schemes, and regimentation have fallen far short of bringing any satisfactory solution for the complex problems of these times. Obviously, then, the answer must be found in the spiritual realm, and it is stated with amazing clarity in a simple, inspired verse in Romans (12:2): "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." We cannot believe that disaster, disease, unhappiness, and turmoil are the will of the one good and perfect God. With what joy we learn that we need not conform to the materialistic opinions and beliefs of mankind, but that we can attain through the regenerative teachings of Christian Science, a transformation of thought, a renewal of mind, and thus "prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
I presume that many in the audience have not studied, or even read, the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy. When you do, and I hope it will be soon, you will notice at once that the teachings of Christian Science are a radical departure from ordinary materialistic thinking. When one accepts the Scriptural concept of God as Love, Spirit, or Mind, it is logical to conclude that the entire creation of Spirit must be spiritual.
The world says that man is matter, subject to disease and eventually to decrepitude and death. But the glad message of Christian Science is that man is spiritual, the son of God, and that this real man necessarily expresses the attributes of his Father-Mother God.
Perhaps someone is thinking, But how can I refuse to see the poverty, unhappiness, disease, disaster, selfishness, sorrow, and sin which are evident everywhere? To say that such material evidence is not true and to insist that such things have no basis, or fundamental principle, may seem unreasonable, until one begins to learn through Christian Science of the illusive nature of all that is not God-created.
In the verse in Romans to which I have just referred, we are told not to believe the evidence of the material senses, and also we are told how to prove that the creations of Spirit are the only reality. It is solely a question of the "renewing of your mind." This renewal is primarily an awakening to one's spiritual status, a realization that spiritual man has not lost his indissoluble connection with God, his creative Principle. In Science and Health, on page 208, Mrs. Eddy puts the point with unmistakable assurance in these words: "Let us learn of the real and eternal, and prepare for the reign of Spirit, the kingdom of heaven—the reign and rule of universal harmony, which cannot be lost nor remain forever unseen."
We must learn, for example, that because God is Spirit, His creation, including man, is spiritual. We must learn that "the kingdom of heaven—the reign and rule of universal harmony" is actually at hand. It is true that God is Mind and that spiritual man is the reflection, the expression, of the loving Mind which knows only harmony and health. It is true that God is Love and is constantly imparting to His ideas abundance, peace, purity, joy, life, and love. Furthermore, it is true that God never imparts evil, but good alone. Such reasoning leads us to the inescapable conclusion that discord, which seems so very real from a human standpoint, must be untrue, unreal, and actually nonexistent.
Does this sound too visionary to be of any practical use in meeting our present-day human problems? Experience proves that this very process of thought is practical indeed, for when we begin to understand that God does not send both good and evil, and that there is no cause or creator other than divine Mind and Love, we begin to see that evil is devoid of Principle and power and that good is everywhere.
An Unprecedented Discovery
The truth about God and His been trying to trace all physical effects to a mental cause; and in the latter part of 1866 I gained the scientific certainty that all causation was Mind, and every effect a mental phenomenon.
My immediate recovery from the effects of an injury caused by an accident, an injury that neither medicine nor surgery could reach, was the falling apple that led me to the discovery how to be well myself, and how to make others so."
The Discovery Not a Mystery
In her published writings she tells us exactly what she learned. For example, she writes on page 108 of Science and Health, "When apparently near the confines of mortal existence, standing already within the shadow of the death-valley, I learned these truths in divine Science: that all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and that Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful and ever-present." These truths about God and man's inseparability from Him have always been true. But they needed to be discovered, and this was the purpose of Mrs. Eddy's lifework. We, too, may awaken spiritually to the fact that there is only one creator and that Spirit's creations are perfect and permanently good. Mrs. Eddy learned these truths, and we must learn them. There is no mystery about her discovery. It is plainly stated in our textbook. Through the earnest study of this book as a "Key to the Scriptures," we have the privilege of traversing for ourselves the road to spiritual regeneration.
Having accepted the fact that "Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful," quite naturally we seek an explanation for diseases and disasters. The explanation for the discords of human living came to Mrs. Eddy through divine revelation and is given in many passages in our textbook. For example, consider the remaining portion of this paragraph on page 108. It reads, "that the opposite of Truth—called error, sin, sickness, disease is a product of a counter-mind or power and therefore, the reality of being, not an expression of Life which is God."
Page 369 of our textbook Mr. Eddy declares that Jesus "undo stood man, whose Life is God, be immortal, and knew that he has not two lives, one to be destroyed and the other to be made indestructible."
Thus we see that the study Christian Science shows us clear and irrefutably that our human experience is the externalization of thought. A purified, uplifted unselfish, and Godlike human consciousness images forth harmed happiness, health, and success; the very opposite manifestation comes forth from discouragement fearful, impure, selfish, sensual unscientific thinking.
A businessman soon learns that greed, dishonesty, fear, and like are not satisfactory business companions. From such states thought emanate unhealthy business conditions. It is also quite universally accepted that erroneous, fear-laden thinking detrimental to bodily health.
Eliminating Fear Brings Health
To illustrate the mortally moral nature of disease that sees wholly physical, I am going to you about a healing which began at a Christian Science lecture. The news of this particular health came to me in a letter, and I going to read some of it to you "About two and a half years ago while undergoing a routine physical check-up required by my doctor, the doctor declared that had a very severe case of diabetes and must at once regulate my diet. Being what I considered a Christian Scientist (to my satisfaction at least), I continued in my regular habits, but was not alert to any suggestion planted in my consciousness. About six weeks later I was again examined, and further laws were laid down and ugly pictures painted. I was pointedly formed that unless I at once took up the use of insulin and continue...

An Unprecedented Discovery
The truth about God and His relationship to His spiritual universe, including the real man, has always been true. It was through understanding this truth that Jesus was able instantaneously to restore to normalcy those who were sick, sinning, dying, or even dead. This he did, as the Bible clearly tells us, and without the use of drugs or other material remedies. His immediate followers were successful practitioners of the healing method he had taught them and, following his admonition, they healed others and taught them how they could heal themselves. His followers went into all parts of the then known world and preached the gospel of healing, even in imperial Rome. They healed the sick, cast out demons, and raised the dead as they had been instructed to do. They had received freely, and Jesus told them to give as freely.
A study of the teachings of Jesus makes it plain that the Christ which he expressed and through which his healing success was made possible has always been available. His statement, "Before Abraham was, I am," did not imply that the human Jesus existed before Abraham, but that the Christ, Truth, has been expressed throughout all time. Unfortunately, the selfishness and materialism of mankind, the very opposite of the Christ-consciousness, obscured the healing Christianity Jesus had lived and demonstrated. Religion had become more ritualistic than practical. In the intervening centuries, there has always been some healing through faith in God, but the unfailing way to rise above the ills and disasters of human living which Jesus taught, seemed to be almost entirely lost until this present age. Then came an unprecedented discovery. It was learned that the Christ is here, that the manifestation of divine Love is now available for solving every human problem.
The truth that spiritual man has forever been God’s image and likeness, and is therefore perfect, was the basis of the healing works of Christ Jesus. That the same understanding of the healing Christ may be utilized today was not realized until Mrs. Eddy discovered the Science of Christianity. The way in which this discovery came about is familiar to many in this audience. But just as Paul never tired of telling of his awakening from spiritual, as well as we have the privilege of traversing for ourselves the road to spiritual regeneration.
It reads, "that the opposite of Truth—called error, sin, sickness, disease, death—is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this same so-called mind names matter thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit."
The discovery less than a century ago that all sickness and disease is but false testimony, the product of a counterfeit, mortal mind, has since been blessing multitudes. Matter is wholly unintelligent, is not creative and never actually caused anything. The only source, the origin or Principle of all, that which knows, is God, the divine Mind. The mind which we call mortal, because it is not immortal or real, is a supposed creator. Mortal mind creations, or beliefs, appear at times to be healthy matter, and then again they seem to be sick matter; but through Christian Science we learn that every externalization of mortal mind is illusive and unreal.
There could not actually be an opposite to that which is amnighty and omnipresent. The divine Mind which is the only Mind, that Truth which is the only Truth, in reality has no opposition. The one Mind, God, made all, and since Mind is Spirit, that which seems to be a matter creation must be unreal. Not being from God, Truth such inharmonies as infection, malformation, misplacement, pain, and the like could not be attached to any idea in God's kingdom. Spiritual man could not be conscious of sick, inflamed, irritated matter because he does not possess a sick, inflamed, irritated mortal consciousness. Being the image of Soul, divine consciousness, man is now always has been, and always will be aware only of good. It is through such prayerful reasoning, my friends, that the discords of our human experience are healed through Christian Science.
The Discovery Illuminates the Scriptures
Let us take a Bible verse at this point to show how this discovery illuminates the Scriptures (Isa. 44:6): "Thus saith lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of Hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." We learn to think of God in Christian Science through the utilization and understanding of such synonymous we have the privilege of traversing for ourselves the road to spiritual regeneration.

The truth that spiritual man has forever been God's image and likeness, and is therefore perfect, was the basis of the healing works of Christ Jesus. That the same understanding of the healing Christ may be utilized today was not realized until Mrs. Eddy discovered the Science of Christianity. The way in which this discovery came about is familiar to many in this audience. But just as Paul never tired of telling of his awakening from spiritual, as well as material, blindness, so we as Christian Scientists never tire of reviewing the facts which led to the disccovery of the method of healing which was used by our Master, and which has brought immeasurable blessings to us. Mrs. Eddy had been sure for many years that such a discovery could be made. She had searched the Bible from beginning to end and on some occasions had healed herself and others. These thoughts are expressed on page 109 of Science and Health: "I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration."
Christian Scientists know that Mrs. Eddy completed the task which was given her to do. She speaks of her discovery as the final revelation. She discovered the Science of Christian healing for which she had been searching, and she proved through successful demonstration that she had learned how to heal as Jesus healed, through spiritual means alone. Those who have read her autobiography, "Retrospection and Introspection," have noted that it contains an enlightening exposition of her discovery, as well as facts about the human life of its discoverer.

Let us take a Bible verse at this point to show how this discovery illuminates the Scriptures (Isa. 44:6): "Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of Hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." We learn to think of God in Christian Science through the utilization and understanding of such synonymous terms as Mind, Love, Principle, and Life. They help us to enlarge our concept of Deity. For example, we may say, "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no [Mind]." There is no intelligence opposite to the divine which could create or maintain discord. In reality, there could be no carnal or mortal mind. Similarly, we may say, "Beside me there is no [Love]." We think of divine Love as the Giver, the infinite Giver. Love is constantly imparting harmony, health, and abundance. There is no giver other than divine Love and, therefore, discord has never been imparted and cannot be received.
Another familiar Bible quotation helps us here. In I John we read (4:18): "There is no fear in love." Love contains no fear which it could impart. So we could never receive fear from God. Fear then has never been given out, for it has no source from which it could come. This leads us back to the verse in Isaiah, "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no [Principle, no law, source, or origin]." It follows that materia medica and mortal mind laws could not be real or enforceable, nor do they manifest Truth or reality.
Before we leave this verse in Isaiah, let us use one more synonym. "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no [Life]." Evil then has no life whatever, no power to give itself continuity or activity. But, someone may say, are we not living in a material universe filled with minds many? We do seem to be doing just that. But the Discoverer of Christian Science has taught us that this entire physical manifesta-
To those unfortunate persons who are living in constant fear of their future, who expect evil almighty after failure, the teaching of Christian Science come as blessed relief. Christian Science teaches a positive sense of God ever-present love, and when spiritual fact that God is the one power is understood, fear is seen to be unnecessary. The word "bandman" means gardener or cultivator. To be eliminated for which is nurtured, or cultivated, mortal thought needs only to be subjected to a prayerful acknowledgment of the substantiality and almightyness of Spirit. A regenerated human consciousness is constructed in things divine can harm the body.
The error of which mortal mind is the husbandman is illusive and unreal, for Truth is the source that which is perfect and true amidst nothing else. To awaken from dream, or belief in sickness, need to be aroused mentally or changed physically.
Many medical practitioners have reached the conclusion that they must give up their hatred and fears. But if physicians do not differentiate between the called human mind and the divine Mind which is God, they are unable to give their patients the remedy for fear. Mrs. Eddy gives Christian Scientists specific instruction for eliminating fear these words: "Tell the sick thief they can meet disease fearless if they only realize that divine Love gives them all power over every physical action and condition" (Science and Health, p. 42). A reassuring verse in the form first chapter of Isaiah re-echoes the same encouraging admonition for it tells us just why fear is necessary. It reads: "Fear thieves not; for I am with theoe: be not done mayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen theoe; yea, I will hieve thoe; yea, I will uphold theoe with the right hand of my righteousness."
Christian Science instructs concerning the truth of being as our human consciousness...
is a product of a counterfeit or power and, therefore, not reality of being, not an expression of Life which is God. On page 369 of our textbook Mrs. Declares that Jesus "understands man, whose Life is God, to immortal, and knew that man not two lives, one to be deed and the other to be made destructible."
Us we see that the study of Christian Science shows us clearly irreversibly that our human science is the externalization thought. A purified, uplifted, fish, and Godlike human consciousness images forth harmony, ness, health, and success; but every opposite manifestation forth from discouraged, mal, impure, selfish, sensual, scientific thinking.
businessman soon learns that dishonesty, fear, and the are not satisfactory business manions. From such states of emanate unhealthy busi-conditions. It is also now universally accepted that obvious, fear-laden thinking is mental to bodily health.
Enlating Fear Brings Healing
illustrate the mortally menace of disease that seems by physical, I am going to tell about a healing which began in Christian Science lecture. News of this particular healing to me in a letter, and I am to read some of it to you: that two and a half years ago, undergoing a routine physi-check-up required by my emerger, the doctor declared that I very severe case of diabetes must at once regulate my diet.
What I considered a Chris-Scientist (to my satisfaction, last), I continued in my regu-bits, but was not alert to the question planted in my conscience. About six weeks later, again examined, and further were laid down and ugly pic-painted. I was pointedly in-uded that unless I at once took use of insulin and continued thereby uplifted or resurrected, this is manifested in a larger and truer sense of harmony and health. This thought is expressed in the third verse of the tenth chapter of II Corinthians: "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh." Putting it in a different way, even though we seem to be living a material existence in a matter body, our warfare against the seeming discords of human living is carried on through spiritualization of thought. Further explanation is given in the fifth verse of this same chapter of II Corinthians. It reads: "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bring-in into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." When the Christ dawns in human consciousness, thoughts of sickness, fear, and death are eliminated. Material beliefs of every name and nature yield before a spiritualized consciousness which refuses to entertain the false but steadfastly holds to the real and the true.
Gains Healing and Business Success
A good example is the experience of a young woman who had been attending a Christian Science Sunday School and who was given an opportunity to demonstrate that the truth she was learning there could be utilized practically. She and a young man who was not a Christian Scientist had been enjoying each other's company. She had noticed that one of his wrists was swollen and seemed to be deformed, and one week end he mentioned it to her, complaining about the discomfort it was causing in his work as a mail carrier. He also voiced the fear that the other wrist was beginning to be affected. With no hesitation she assured him that Christian Science could correct this discord. She explained that she would be able to help him, and he agreed to let her do what she could. Each day during the following week, she pondered nothingness of the discord by knowing it does not exist in God's perfect plan.
Healing Through Awakening to Reality
The beginner in Christian Science sometimes hears a Christian Scientist remark that all is well, that man is perfect and harmonious, when the material manifestation is very far from perfection. Such remarks are scientific, but they often provoke antagonism. In prayer in Christian Science we learn to begin with God, divine Mind. We accept the declaration in Genesis that all that God made was good, and that man was made in His image and likeness. We reason that man, as the likeness of Spirit, must be spiritual and as perfect as Principle, the source and law of his being. We realize that this perfect God-created man does not need to be changed or healed. It is not surprising that this radical stand is misunderstood by those who are not students of this Science, because it denies all the evidence of material sense.
When we start our prayerful reasoning with an understanding of God, and not with trouble, when we realize that God is the sole creator and governor and that He made only good, we see that we are not trying to get rid of something through our treatment, but we are trying to awaken to that which has always been real and true.
The enlightenment which comes through a prayerful acknowledgment of reality removes what we call physical discords and enables us to establish and maintain a sense of health. But let us not forget that the correction comes entirely in human thought. And so it is that when we study the Bible and the Christian Science text-book, seek the services of a Christian Science practitioner, or at times take advantage of the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere of the Christian Science Sanatoriums at San Francisco or Boston, our basic motive should be to gain a

For what I considered a Christian Scientist (to my satisfaction, last), I continued in my regular habits, but was not alert to the question planted in my conscience. About six weeks later, I again examined, and further were laid down and ugly picture-painted. I was pointedly inquired that unless I at once took the use of insulin and continued to use the drug, I could not expect to again give my son, a B-24 pilot overseas." The letter goes on to explain he resigned all his church accords and began to use the drug. He writes: "Several times I really discontinued the injection but each time my fear remained in some claim which the attributed to the disease, the dosage was increased until it known in his experience." At that point, which was in 1944, the man attended a Christian Science lecture, and of course says: "I left the lecture hall man, literally and actually. Passed through the valley of Mon and had begun the upclimb. Injections of insulin needed that day." Through the book of a Christian Science practitioner and his own sincere effort he gained his complete and permanent healing within a few months.
More I decided to tell you of healing, I wrote my friend for permission to relate his experience. In his reply he told me he be very happy to have me and he quoted the following sentences from page 493 of Science Health: "Disease is an experienced so-called mortal mind. It bear made manifest on the body." He added, "The lecture so metely removed the fear that I could never again have science in either the diagnosis or remedies of mortal mind."
Future Need Not Follow Success
wonder how many of the Christian Scientists in this audience remember this statement: "As old mind is the husbandman of life it should be taught to do body no harm and to uproot rise sowing." It is in Science Health at the top of page 180. Those unfortunate persons who living in constant fear of the world, who expect evil almost than they look for good, and superstitiously hold to the belief that success must always be used by failure, the teachings of Christian Science come as a aid relief. Christian Science has a positive sense of God's present love, and when the usual fact that God is the only one is understood, fear is seen unnecessary. The word "husband" means gardener or culprit. To be eliminated, fear joying each other's company. Each day during the following week, she pondered these words from Science and Health (p. 418): "Tumors, ulcers, tubercles, inflammation, pain, deformed joints, are waking dreamshadows, dark images of mortal thought, which flee before the light of Truth." She knew that dark images of mortal thought have no power, for God alone is Mind. Waking dream-shadows need not be feared, for they have no realism or actual existence. When they met again during the next week end, the Sunday School pupil inquired about the condition, and the young man was astonished to see that the discord had disappeared.
We learn as we progress that statements of truth which, when understood, result in the healing of physical disease are just as useful for solving business problems. This same young couple have worked out the question of adequate supply for a home and a growing family by turning for inspiration and guidance to the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. They have learned to do this habitually, many times during the day, and in the midst of busy human activities. As their understanding of divine Love's abundance has expanded, their everyday experience has continued to express more and more affluence. The man is now conducting his own very successful and highly profitable business. He knows how to keep his thoughts in close communion with the divine Mind, the source of all right ideas, and this has resulted in correct business decisions and harmonious, consistent progress.
In the proportion that we exclude from our thought all erroneous beliefs through filling our consciousness with a clear concept of God and His perfect spiritual creation, progress becomes inevitable, right where we are.
Maintaining thought on a high spiritual plane is not always easy, but Christian Scientists have been provided invaluable aids. For example, we have the privilege of instruction and inspiration through our Bible Lesson-Sermons. These are studied daily during the week and used in all of our churches on Sunday. Every Christian Science church maintains a Reading Room where the Bible, together with Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, may be read and studied. These writings are also available in small volumes which through a prayerful acknowledgment of reality removes what we call physical discords and enables us to establish and maintain a sense of health. But let us not forget that the correction comes entirely in human thought. And so it is that when we study the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, seek the services of a Christian Science practitioner, or at times take advantage of the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere of the Christian Science Sanatoriums at San Francisco or Boston, our basic motive should be to gain a spiritually awakened and uplifted consciousness. Mrs. Eddy sums up the thought of how to learn to pray aright in these inspired words: "In this Science, we discover man in image and likeness of God. We see that man has never lost his spiritual estate and his eternal harmony" (Science and Health, p. 548).
In learning to accept the good that God gives, whether it comes through our own effort or through the prayerful knowing of a Christian Science practitioner in our behalf, it is well always to remember that it is our thought that needs to be awakened, enlightened, and uplifted.
This reminds me of a seven-year-old girl who, one Sunday evening, was suffering from an earache. Her father telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner and asked him to help her in overcoming the discord. In a short time she was asleep, but when she awakened later in the evening, she still felt that the situation had not entirely cleared up. She then asked her mother to bring her her own copy of Science and Health and the Bible. This little girl had learned the Commandments and the Lord's Prayer from the Bible and "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health (p. 468). She also knew where to find them. Although she did not read very well, she turned to these pages one by one and repeated what she had memorized. When she awakened the next morning, she asked her mother to call the practitioner right away and tell him that she was all well, and she added, "But tell him I did some work for myself too."
Sometimes grownups get the impression that after they have called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, they need merely to sit still and do nothing further. But it is to be remembered that our own consciousness must be awakened and enlightened; and those whose thought is receptive to the truth about God and man, because they are gleaning fresh inspiration through their own study, usually respond most quickly to Christian Science treatment.

Those unfortunate persons who living in constant fear of the devil, who expect evil almost than they look for good, and superstitiously hold to the belief that success must always be achieved by failure, the teachings of Christian Science come as a relief. Christian Science is a positive sense of God's present love, and when the actual fact that God is the only one is understood, fear is seen unnecessary. The word "husbandman" means gardener or culturer. To be eliminated, fear is nurtured, or cultivated, in all thought needs only to be addressed to a prayerful acknowledgment of the substantiality and contentness of Spirit. A regal human consciousness indeed in things divine cannot be the body.
The error of which mortal mind husbandman is illusive and ill, for Truth is the source of which is perfect and true and nothing else. To awaken from a man, or belief in sickness, we have to be aroused mentally, not need physically.
Many medical practitioners have used the conclusion that the ills of flesh are induced mentally. Often tell their patients that must give up their hatreds fears. But if physicians do differentiate between the so-called human mind and the divine which is God, they are not to give their patients the surety for fear. Mrs. Eddy gives Christian Scientists specific intention for eliminating fear in their words: "Tell the sick that can meet disease fearlessly, may only realize that divine gives them all power over physical action and condition (Science and Health, p. 420). Assuring verse in the forty-chapter of Isaiah re-echoes some encouraging admonition, tells us just why fear is not necessary. It reads, "Fear thou for I am with thee: be not disgusted; for I am thy God: I will then thee; yea, I will help you yea, I will uphold thee with right hand of my righteousness."
Christian Science instructs us learning the truth of being, and our human consciousness is maintaining thought on a high spiritual plane is not always easy, but Christian Scientists have been provided invaluable aids. Every Christian Science church maintains a Reading Room where the Bible, together with Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, may be read and studied. These writings are also available in small volumes which can be read during the day as opportunities present themselves. We have our authorized periodicals containing articles on Christian Science as well as testimonies of healing.
Our daily newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, performs a service for the Christian Scientist and for all its readers which is not always fully appreciated. It brings us accurate, truthful news of national and international importance, thus presenting an opportunity to give discordant news our prayerful attention. The turmoil and disaster which are presented to us in the guise of international affairs are no more real in God's sight than the sickness and other inharmonies which tempt us into believing they are attached to individuals. Let us know that the divine Mind is always present to guide decisions in national and international conferences and assemblies. By doing our part in realizing the impersonality and powerlessness of evil in its various guises, we are using the most effective weapon which could be employed to establish peace among men and nations. Truly, it is more blessed to give than to receive—more blessed for the giver. All Christian Scientists have ample opportunity these days to help themselves, and all mankind as well, by doing more than merely reading the unbiased news reports in our international daily newspaper. When we thus become aware of world or national conditions which need correcting or healing, we learn to impersonalize the discord presented, that is, to separate evil from person or nation. Then let us realize the
Boundless Blessing for All Mankind
It seems more evident each day that obedience to the law of God as taught in Christian Science will alone save the race from destroying itself. Those who are studying this Science have a profound duty and privilege. We have learned that true progress is spiritual. It is true that the real man (and by this time I am sure we are all agreeing that there is no other man) has always possessed abundant goodness, right activity, and harmony, by reflection. Therefore, when health seems to be lost, when necessities seem to be lacking, when correct ideas for working out difficult business problems do not seem to be at hand, or when the world seems to be exploding with strife and turmoil, we are only being confronted with different phases of the erroneous belief that man does not reflect God. There is not one vestige of truth in such a fabulous notion.
Mrs. Eddy has written: "Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love. Here is the great point of departure for all true spiritual growth" (Science and Health, p. 91). Actually to get rid of the belief that man is now suffering, lacking, sick, or discouraged, we must gain a clearer concept of the permanence of the real man's unity with his Father-Mother God. And having gained this higher ground, my friends, we must share more fully with all mankind the boundless blessing that has come to us through having the privilege of utilizing Mrs. Eddy's priceless discovery, namely, "that all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and that Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful and ever-present" (Science and Health, p. 108).
