Donald L. Griggs of Rt. 1, Box 203A Fullerton and Theodore L. Matthews of 6942 Lincoln Ave., Anaheim, chose the U.S. Air Force and are now at Lackland Air Base where they will take 14 weeks of basic training and then go to the school of their choice before being assigned to some Air Base for permanent duty. The other enlistee, who gave his permanent mailing address as 12162 Allard street, Norwalk, is a former Army veteran who served as 1st Lieutenant in the Army Engineer Corps during the last war. He chose his former branch and enlisted as a S/Sgt the other day. Although we cannot enlist any Army men this month except those that reenlist within 90 days, we still have a quota for the Air Force enlistments. However, we probably will fill the quota within a week or so. One of the biggest advantages the airman gets is free trade and technical training. Schools and classes are conducted on Air Force bases throughout the world. And the training is tops! Aircraft Jet' Mechanics school gives you an education in the latest aviation techniques, and is worth $1,500 of civilian education and training. That's what you'd have to pay if you went to a regular trade school, for the same course. 1½ HR. If you decide to stay in, you can go right up to the top rung of the ladder; and you can apply for Officer's Candidate school, if you've got the qualifications. If you decide to go back to a civilian job, after your first "hitch" you'll really have headstart. With Air Force training and experience, you'll be an expert in your chosen field. You'll have a chance to travel and see the world, because there are Air Force bases all over the globe. And you'll have the same training and recreational facilities on every base. Speaking of recreation—one of the greatest sports programs today is being run by the Air Force. Every base has teams, and you'll have your choice of football, baseball, basketball, tennis and dozens of other popular sports to choose from. Dances are held regularly in the Airmen's clubs and you are automatically a member when you enlist and step into that sharp uniform. All in all, I think an Air Force career is tops for men 17 to 35. Drop into my U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting offices at the City Hall in Fullerton and ask all about it. The phone number is 841. Estimate 35,000 Persons Go Off Old-Age Rolls SACRAMENTO, (WNS)—From estimates made by the legislative budget committee, approximately 35,000 persons will go off the old age rolls on March 1. This figure includes some 18,000 who are between 63 and 65 years of age, and 17,000 persons who have personal property in excess of $600. In addition, another 9,000 persons are scheduled to go off the rolls from April 1 to July 1, in Antelopes Moved To New Home In the lonely, rugged terrain of southeastern Mono county, the remnants of California's aboriginal herd of half-a-million antelope are being given another chance to hold their own against the inroads of civilization. The Division of Fish and Game has announced completion of a trapping and transplanting operation which moved 50 antelope from their Lassen county home to a less crowded area once inhabited by their ancestors. The 230-mile truck trip through Nevada brought the pronghorns to their new Benton Meadows residence in good condition. 65 Trapped Sixty-five of the colorful animals were trapped during the month of December in the lava beds east of Susanville. Of the total, two were earmarked for display in the City of Sacramento zoo, two escaped, five were casulaties, and six were rejected because of advanced age. Assistant Game Manager Bert F. Knowles, leader of the Federal aid Pittmain-Robertson project, reported that the release supplements a similar transplanting expedition effected by the State agency in the winter of 1946-47. At that time, 32 antelope were released in Mono county. Another trapping and transplanting operation is planned during the first two weeks of January. The speedy animals are trapped on over-grazed ranges in north-eastern California with the aid of Appliances repaired, motors sold and repaired—24 hr. service. BRODIE'S "House of Lights" 112 N. L.A. It seems "Brownie" was left speechless by a mere slip of a magazine saleswoman who tried out some rapid elocution on him. The ordinarily well contained Brown, according to usually reliable sources, could not even coordinate for a "no." Instead he slid rapidly out the door. Old-Age Rolls SACRAMENTO, (WNS)—From estimates made by the legislative budget committee, approximately 35,000 persons will go off the old age rolls on March 1. This figure includes some 18,000 who are between 63 and 65 years of age, and 17,000 persons who have personal property in excess of $600. In addition, another 9,000 persons are scheduled to go off the rolls from April 1 to July 1, inclusive, who have responsible relatives. This group, however, may never go off the pension rolls if the state legislature, which will consider old age pensions at a special session in March, votes out the relatives responsibility clause. The budget committee submitted these estimates in view of claims made by George McLain, pension promoter, that "100,000 persons will be denied old age pension starting March 1," when the new constitutional amendment, repealing McLain's amendment adopted in 1948, goes into effect. At the same time, the budget committee said there is no reason to anticipate any holding up of federal funds because of non-conformity with the federal old age laws. The only question, it was stated, is a definition of excess needs of pensioners, which can be rectified by definition of the department of social welfare. All other questions, such as protection of the rights of employees, have been rectified, it was stated. Santa Fe Net Income Drops Santa Fe's net income for December, 1949, was $4,431,564 according to a statement released by President F. G. Gurley today. Net income for the twelve months of 1949 was $50,042,147 compared with $62,842,771 in twelve months of 1948. Assistant Game Manager Bert F. Knowles, leader of the Federal aid Pittman-Robertson project, reported that the release supplements a similar transplanting expedition effected by the State agency in the winter of 1946-47. At that time, 32 antelope were released in Mono county. Another trapping and transplanting operation is planned during the first two weeks of January. The speedy animals are trapped on over-grazed ranges in northeastern California with the aid of an airplane. Herded, sorted, and loaded, they are then taken in flatbed stake trucks for release in more suitable habitat. Driven Back In the past century, agricultural development has driven the once abundant antelope into the remote lava bed and woodland country behind the high Sierra. Here, on narrowing ranges, the decimated herds have held their own under the watchful eyes of state employees. In 1949, when the herd was declared too large for the amount of available forage, the Fish and Game Commission announced a limited open hunting season. 348 bucks were taken under special permits. Open seasons were also held in 1942, 1943, 1944, and 1945. With an estimated state population of between 4,000 and 6,000 head, the Division will attempt to give the antelope a come back try in a small remaining part of their original habitat which is undeveloped. The goal is an eventual population which will present little threat to Inyo-Mono counties range and crop lands and offer an occasional antelope hunt for California sportsmen. Proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Mills, 13791 Wright street, Garden Grove, who welcomed a seven-pound son who arrived at St. Joseph hospital Tuesday of last week. This was the statement made today by Dr. Cyril A. Smith, President of the Orange County Dental Society, in announcing the completion of plans for Children's Dental Health Day as a part of a national effort, aimed at acquainting the parent and the child with the principles of dental health and the prevention of dental disease. "Dental disease among children is increasing, despite the efforts and services of the dental profession. It is a serious problem which can only be solved if a program of dental health is followed daily in the home, and greater attention is paid to the prevention of dental disease," Dr. Smith declared. "The only answer then is education, stressing the importance of a clean mouth and a wholesome diet of unprocessed and unrefined foods. Unless this program is practiced, we are destined to become a nation of dental cripples," Dr. Smith warned. On Children's Dental Health Day, an all-out educational effort will be conducted by the local dental society. A good way to determine whether you are driving too fast is to compare your speed with that of the majority of cars on the road. If you are passing up most of them, then you're probably driving too fast, says the California Highway Patrol.
