Salvation Army Issues Appeal "Wanted at once—50,000 articles of wearing apparel, and 1,000 sets of bedroom, dining room, and kitchen furniture." This is the request made today to the general public by Brigadier Fred Ahrn, manager of the Salvation Army social service center serving this area. Dire need for shoes, furniture, and warm clothing is being found to an alarming degree among the rising tide of unemployed persons, Brig. Ohrn said. "The hundreds of appeals for outright gifts of clothes and furnishings to needy families which the social service center has received during the past three months has almost totally depleted our available stock," he revealed. Ever increasing amounts of salvage materials cast-off at homes and offices are sought by the Salvation Army for refinishing and redistribution. To care for the increased charity load, housewives and executives are being asked to sort out no-longer-wanted, shoes sweaters, overcoats, jackets, and suits from closets, and articles of furniture from storerooms and garages. A telephone call to Anaheim 4631 will bring a Salvation Army Red Shield truck to home or office to pick up discarded material. During the past 12 months at the social service center, wages paid to indigent and hadicapped men totaled $121,360.64. Number of meals provided were 74,814. Over 7,000,000 pounds of salvage materials and newspapers were collected and processed. Resale of items supplied funds to pay wages and provide meals, lodgings, and other aid for the needy. Consider Rezoning Of Former Navy Base to Industry Whether the 680-acre tract on the Irvine ranch, formerly occupied by the U.S. navy lighter-than-air base, and still owned by the federal government, shall be rezoned for light industry, is a question to be decided at public hearing, set by the county board of supervisors for February 7. Lessees of the tract are promoting an industrial development, and accordingly have petitioned for rezoning of the tract from agriculture to light industry. Hangars and other installations left by the navy still are in place on the tract, with street and utility facilities. Frederick Fries Succumbs Sunday Frederick Fries, 54, 1109 South street, Anaheim, died unexpectedly last Sunday night at Anaheim Community hospital following an extended illness. A native of New York, Mr. Fries had resided in this city for the past 44 years. He was taken to the hospital Saturday and it was believed there was some improvement in his condition earlier Sunday. That evening, however, his condition grew steadily worse. He was a member of Chapter No. 3173 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are two brothers, William and Harry Fries both of Anaheim. Funeral services were conducted yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at Hilgenfeld chapel with the Rev. P. G. Neumann, former pastor of Bethel Baptist church, this city, officiating. Entombment was in Melrose Abbey mausoleum. Give the older people a break. During the past 12 months at the social service center, wages paid to indigent and handicapped men totaled $121,360.64.
