All-Navy Grid Classic At Coliseum
Quantico's famous Marines, defending All-Navy football champions, defend their national grid service title Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) at the L.A. Coliseum against the West's undefeated representative, the mighty Camp Pendleton Marines.
Quantico cinched its right to the national title playoff, it's third in as many years, by thumping Camp LeJeune last weekend, 34-14.
The Leathernecks from Virginia have one of the greatest teams in service history. They have lost but one service game in three years, and that was LeJeune earlier this year. Last Saturday's victory over LeJeune when the championship chips were down, once again proved Quantico's national calibre.
Because of the undefeated status of the Pendleton gridders, Southland pigskin prognosticators are picking the local Marines as pregame favorites. Ace of the Penon squad is Wes (Skeet) Quinlan, fleet scatback, who tears of TD runs with reckless abandon.
Movie star Virginia Mayo will be "Football Queen" for the Saturday afternoon classic.
The game is sponsored by the American Legion Los Angeles County Council and has been billed as "Everybody's Football Game." It is a popular priced affair. The Coliseum has been scaled at $1.50 for reserved seats, students 50 cents and kids under 12 years, 25 cents.
Set Rifle Range Work Party
Another rifle range work party will be held tonight (Thursday) from 6:30 to 9 o'clock at the new city range in the industrial track, under chairmanship of K. E. Stevens, president of the Anaheim Associated Rifle Clubs.
Forresters Expect Bigger Ski Season
It's merry ski-time in California. And indications are that more skiers will be tracking the white mountain slopes this season than ever before.
"California region led all other regions of the U.S. Forest Service last year, with a total of 580,000 visits to ski areas on national forests," says Millard M. Barnum, assistant regional forester at San Francisco. "But that was just a fair season, because of unfavorable mid-winter weather. We expect California will maintain its leading position this year, and go on to exceed the previous best record—the 650,000 visits in the pre-war ski season of 1940-41."
New Ski Areas
Two new ski areas and two new ski-lifts at existing areas are added attractions this winter.
The new areas are Squaw Valley, near Lake Tahoe and partly within the Taohoe National Forest, offering a double-chair lift 8,000 feet long and a new lodge; and Big Bear, at Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest, offering a chair lift 3,016 feet long.
The other new lifts are a T-bar lift 1,350 feet long at Mile-High resort near Long Barn in the Stanislaus National Forest; and a new chair lift, 5,130 feet long, at Snow Valley, 30 miles from San Bernardino in the San Bernardino National Forest.
California has 75 winter sports areas. According to Mr. Barnum, 40 of them are in national forests, 33 are on private land within national-forest boundaries, and two are in national parks.
In order to save taxpayers' money and cooperate with private enterprise, the U.S. Forest Service does not construct lodges, ski lifts, etc., but instead issues "special-use" permits to enterprisers who are willing and qualified to construct and operate such facilities at ski areas on national forest
Set Rifle Range Work Party
Another rifle range work party will be held tonight (Thursday) from 6:30 to 9 o'clock at the new city range in the industrial track, under chairmanship of K. E. Stevens, president of the Anaheim Associated Rifle Clubs.
Projects for the evening will include working on the backstop on the pistol side of the large range and fencing the front of the range.
It is hoped both these projects will be completed tonight, said Stevens. A committee has been appointed to draw up range rules under chairmanship of Major Ralph Comstock, commandant of Anaheim Union high school's California Cadet Corps.
Because of the Christmas holiday, no further work parties are planned after tonight, until after the first of the year. The rifle shooters meet regularly on the first Monday of each month. Because January 2 is a holiday, it is expected the club will convene January 9, at the regular meeting place in the high school armory. All rifle enthusiasts are invited to attend.
A construction engineer and chairman in charge of rifle range construction will be appointed soon. Norbert DeCook is in charge of constructing the pistol range.
Pedestrians, do you expect to be alive on Christmas Day? Last December 106 persons walked themselves to death here in California. The California highway patrol suggests you cross only at intersections, look carefully before crossing and cross with the green light wherever possible. Don't let death take your holiday.
In order to save taxpayers' money and cooperate with private enterprise, the U. S. Forest Service does not construct lodges, ski lifts, etc., but instead issues "special-use" permits to enterprisers who are willing and qualified to construct and operate such facilities at ski areas on national forest lands. Ski slopes there are for free use by the public, but permittees are allowed to charge a reasonable fee for use of privately-financed facilities.
Waterfowl Season Opens Monday Noon
San Francisco—Better prospects are insight for 175,000 duck hunters who will open California's second waterfowl hunting season at noon, Monday, December 19.
That's the usual outlook for the last half of the split hunting season, says the Division of Fish and Game, as a result of December storms driving ducks and geese southward over a greater area of the state. More nimrods are expected to take home their daily limit of five ducks and six geese in the next few weeks than during the first 20-day season.
In passing along Federal waterfowl regulations, the state agency reminded hunters that a state hunting license as well as a $2 federal duck stamp is required. Guns must be plugged to hold not more than three shells, and the shooting of Ross geese, swans, and shore birds is taboo.
Daily bag limits are: five ducks
He said two highway routes in motorcycle registration have spent the past year using motorcycle clubs and in a safety program for motorcycle operators.
Accidents Decrease
"Despite a 30 per cent increase in motorcycle registrations the first seven months compared to the same 1948, motorcycle accidents been reduced 5.1 per commissioner said.
"This has been achieved through the cooperation motorcycle clubs in planned events and in their own ranks."
Peterson said both cars now carry out the same program for hot rods. He said the patrol will the formation of hot rods the staging of planned highways.
"By reaching these through high schools colleges in whose shop the 'hot rod' type we built, I am sure we get successful programs aid in reducing accident of all species in the aggregation which may be a wood geese in the aggregate bination not exceeding ada geese, white-fronted brant; 15 coots or m mergansers.
Possession limits are daily bag limits for gansers, and coots. Dusion is two daily limits opening day.
Following the noon December 19, shooting vert to one-half hour rise and one hour before Migratory waterfowl move for 90 days following the season, January 7."

Ikes Inspect Dam-Building Work Here
Izaak Walton league members, from six Orange county chapters, who were instrumental in obtaining construction of small check dams along Holy Jim creek, off Trabuco canyon, learned Sunday that they pioneered a fish propagation project new to southern California.
The stream improvement program, under which the county expended $3090 for building 28 small check dams, at an average of about $110 each, along the creek, was inspected by delegations from Anaheim, Fullerton, Orange and Santa Ana, in company with D. A. Clanton, assistant supervisor of hatcheries of the state fish and game division; State Forest Ranger Joe Schermann of Orange and federal Ranger J. K. Munhall of Corona.

Clanton told the Ikes the work completed in this county is the answer to the problem of providing recreation resources for the 5,000,000 people living in southern California.
State Biologist William A. Evans suggested that the Ikes investigate the possibility of developing warm water fishing for bass, bluegill, croppies and catfish, through securing use of private reservoirs.
Construction of the check dams along Holy Jim creek demonstrated, it was stated, that a half-mile of the controlled stream had as many fish as five miles of unchecked stream.
Evans pointed out that there are a number of other streams in the county that could be similarly improved, including upper Santiago creek, Falls creek, Trabuco creek, Hot Springs creek and San Juan creek.
Will Attempt To Temper Heat Of Hot-Rodders
Sacramento,(WNS)—A program to temper the heat generated by youthful "hot rod" enthusiasts was being kindled here.
Highway patrol commissioner Clifford E. Peterson said he will seek to dampen the hot rod accident rates through educational programs.
“This isn’t a plan to put a chill on hot rod operators,” Peterson explained, “it is a plan which has worked successfully in reducing motorcycle accidents during the past year.”
He said two highway patrolmen, Ezra Erhardt and C. A. Pollard, have spent the past year contacting motorcycle clubs and schools in a safety program developed for motorcycle operators.
Accidents Decrease
• “Despite a 30 per cent increase in motorcycle registrations during the first seven months of 1949 as compared to the same period in 1948, motorcycle accidents have been reduced 5.1 percent,” the commissioner said.

Possession limits are the same as daily bag limits for geese, mergansers, and coots. Duck possession is two daily limits, except on opening day.
Following the noon opening on December 19, shooting hours revert to one-half hour before sunrise and one hour before sunset. Migratory waterfowl may be held for 90 days following the close of the season, January 7.
