Postpone Murder Trial of Youth Trial of James Cullison, 18, Westminster youth charged with the murder of Mrs. Alice Tarver, elderly Santa Ana woman who was fatally beaten in her home last September 26, has been postponed to next Monday, December 12, in Superior Judge Gardner's court. Postponement was requested by District Attorney James L. Davis, who plans to personally conduct the prosecution of Cullison. Davis Communications Wizard Shown here as he adjusts repeaters in an Army automatic telephone installation; is Sgt. Henry C. Kahrman, of the Signal Corps. "This work sure looks complicated at first," Kahrman admits. "But with the expert training the Army gives you, you learn it fast." Bob acquired all his specialized training in the Army and is making it his career: "Only 10 years to go and I'll retire," he points out. "In the meantime I've a depression-proof job, a chance to save for the future and plenty of other advantages." Bob says a young man who wants to learn a trade the way he did can't CARE Observes Fifth Year With Expansion With the beginning of its fifth year of operations, CARE today, through Edward J. Flynn, western states director, made a report on the nine million food and textile packages shipped to needy people in Europe and Asia since the inception of the CARE service. Placing a value on these parcels at $88,000,000, Flynn pointed out that in the single item of meat about 50,000,000 cans have been packaged for CARE... roughly the equivalent of 18,000 head of cattle, 90,000 pigs and 170,000 turkeys. In the form of powdered and canned milk, some 50 million quarts have gone to build strong bones and teeth in European and Asiatic children. Enough flour has been sent to bake more than 30 million loaves of fine white bread. When the five million pounds of rice is cooked, there should be enough to fill 20 million bowls. Pointing out that U.S. government reports, as well as surveys by CARE overseas missions, indicate that great areas of need still exist. Flynn said that in its fifth year CARE, far from reducing its services, is expanding them. CARE is a U.S. government-approved service composed of 25 major welfare agencies. Food and textile packages ranging in price from $4.00 to $10.00 may be ordered from the local CARE office at 217 West Ninth street, Los Angeles 15. now is engaged in conducting prosecution of another murder case, that against Simon Cervantes, 22, of Stanton, which still was in progress this week, when the In 1945 science learned how to harness the power of the atom. In 1949 science learned how to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The importance of the first discovery has been explained adequately perhaps to every literate person in the world. The importance of the second discovery is not so well understood, but it is a tremendous medical achievement nevertheless. Arthritis is the world's oldest known disease. Evidence of its prevalence in the ancient world has been found in the bones of men and animals dead before the concept of history existed. Today rheumatic disease is still the most wide-spread of all chronic ailments, claiming no fewer than seven and a half million American victims. Until the discovery this year that the secret lay in a group of hormones known as steroids, medicine had been able to do little for arthritis except to alleviate pain. Before the many research leads offered by the discovery of cortisone and ACTH are exhausted, it is entirely possible that rheumatic disease as a cause of disability and pain will be eliminated.
