CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
“Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?” This question will be the subject of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. The Golden Text is from the Psalms:
“God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; that thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.”
Mark's Gospel relates that a man with an unclean spirit cried out, “Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy one of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And . . . he came out of him. And they were all amazed . . . saying, What thing is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.”
“Jesus uncovered and rebuked sin before he cast it out,” says Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” “He came teaching and showing men how to destroy sin, sickness, and death.” “Only those who repent of sin and forsake the unreal, can fully understand the unreality of evil.”

GI Student Enrollment Time Extended
Extension to November 1, 1949, of time for enrollment of veterans seeking to re-enter training or to change courses under the GI Bill was made last week by Veterans Administration.
The change in effective date of the application of Public Law 266, which prohibits certain types of training under the GI Bill, was made by Carl R. Gray, Jr., Administrator of Veterans Affairs, who said he granted the extension to avoid working a possible hardship on any students who had not had the time to complete plans for entering schools before the original effective date of the regulations, which was September 12, 1949.
Under the relaxed instruction, all veterans who have made satisfactory progress in school have until November 1, 1949, to enroll in courses of training without the necessity of prior approval of VA for changes of course or reentry into training after once having completed or dropped out of a course.
Public Law 266, passed last August 24, prohibits veterans from taking GI Bill courses for recreational or avocational purposes, or courses in institutions not in existence for at least one year. The new instruction does not change this prohibition, but after November 1, 1949, a new type of certificate of eligibility must be used, which shows the course and school the veteran seeks to enter. This VA said, will enable a quick screening of applications for certificate of eligibility to make sure Mrs. Zimmerman Claimed by Death

Urge Placing
Disabled Vets
In Suitable Jobs
The value to the community of
placing disabled veterans in suitable jobs is emphasized all year'
round by County Service Officer,
Ben Lieberman, but this week it
is once more the theme of a nation-wide campaign.
National Employ the Physically
Handicapped Week is being observed this week, October 2
through 8th.
As a member of the committee
sponsoring NEPH Week in Orange
county, Mr. Lieberman declared
that veterans who suffered a disability as a result of their wartime
service have a right to the highest
priority in jobs for the physically
handicapped.
"Many of these veterans," he said, "have now undergone extensive and carefully-supervised training to fit them for vocations. They are anxious to take their place in the economic pattern of our community. It's not charity, or even gratitude, that they ask; it's a chance to prove that they can be of real dollars-and-cents value to an employer in the right spot."
Impatial surveys have repeatedly shown that physically handicapped workers often out-produce their non-handicapped colleagues in almost any line of work.
Explain Numbering
System Used for NSLI Dividends
Veterans Administration today explained the numbering system being used to identify applications for dividend payments in connexion with VA on both the application form and the acknowledgement card returned to the applicant, is in two parts.
The number appearing to the right consists of two digits preceded by the letter "A." This number remains the same for each group of 1,000,000 cards. The designation "AO5," therefore, indicates that the application is among the fifth million cards processed.
The number to the left, composed of four digits, is a batch number, identifying each batch of 100 cards within the one million group. Thus, the number '0247 A05' indicates that the application is in the 247 batch of the fifth million cards processed.
All the applications in each batch of 100 cards bear identical numbers.
Porridge is known in Ireland as "stir-about"
