Work Proceeds On Edison Big Creek Dam Engineers of the Southern California Edison Company have moved a mountain river to build another dam and another hydroelectric plant at the Edison Big Creek-San Joaquin River development in the High Sierra. Today, the San Joaquin River, six miles southeast of North Fork in Madera county and near Willow Creek, flows through a 847-foot long diversion tunnel leaving the stream bed dry for construction of the power dam. Nearly a thousand men are working day and night on the new plant project, known as Big Creek No. 4, to complete the job in 1951 and add 84,000 kilowatts of electric generating capacity to the Edison Company system. Construction of the dam is the first major move in the $20,000,-000 project. It's massive bulk will form a barrier across the canyon of the San Joaquin 954 feet long and 228 feet high. The north abutment is on the Madera county side of the river and the south abutment in on the Fresno county side. State Guard's Recruit Drive Nears Goal New Hospital Benefits Start January 1 Sacramento, (WNS)—Although provisions of the new hospital disability benefits which provide $8 per day hospitalization for workers, are in effect today, the state department of employment said no workers will benefit from provisions of the law until January 1. A clause in the amendment makes provision for payment of the benefits beginning on that date. C. A. Herbage, deputy director of the department, said that many persons have asked about their rights under the new benefit law, in the belief that the legislature intended it to go into effect October 1. "We hope to avoid disappointment to other persons by emphasizing that the legislature specified that additional cash payments to disability insurance claimants who are hospitalized will not begin until January 1, 1950," he said. An amendment, however, which does go into effect today, is the provision that a person who is convicted of fraudulently receiving benefits shall lose all rights to benefits acquired prior to commission of the fraud. Cadwalader, seaman State Guard’s Recruit Drive Nears Goal After jumping the gun, by about two weeks, on a country wide National Guard recruiting drive, numerical strength of southern California’s 40th Infantry Division today exceeded that achieved during the rush to join the guard after passage of the post-war draft law. Maj. Gen. Daniel H. Hudelson reported the organization today has about 8,100 officers and men, as compared with 7,032 after the draft law rush. He said weeding out of poorly qualified men and other attrition at one time reduced the number of men to 6,652 when the current campaign started. The division, largest military organization in southern California, has 108 units in 45 communities. Hudelson’s enlistment goal of 2,543 men was nearly half achieved. The division’s units include the 160th, 223rd, and 224th Infantry regiments; 143rd, 980th, 981st, and 985th Field Artillery Battalions; 140th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, 140th Heavy Tank Battalion; 578th Engineer (Combat) Sattallon, 115th Medical Battalion, and Signal, Military Police, Quartermaster, and Ordnance Maintenance companies. Freak Avocado Portrays Dog Head Paul Neubauer of Rt. 5, 11782 East Ball road, this city, brought an unusual specimen of an avocado, a freak, into the Gazette office last Friday morning. Explaining the origin of the Fuente tree on which this ‘would-be’ avocado grew, Mr. Neubauer told of the time he and his sister planted the seed from an avocado they had been eating in a flower bed and for fifteen years the tree bore no fruit. Deciding to transplant to another location, they had the tree cut back and budded and for the past number of years it has gradually been increasing its output of fruit. This past season, Mr. Neubauer harvested $130 in fruit with perennial roots does go into effect today, is the provision that a person who is convicted of fraudulently receiving benefits shall lose all rights to benefits acquired prior to commission of the fraud. John Cadwalader Aboard USS Mount McKinley John R. Cadwalader, seaman apprentice, USN, of 832 South Philadelphia street, Anaheim, is serving as crew member aboard the general communication ship USS Mount McKinley, which is participating this fall in “Operation Miki,” a large-scale amphibious exercise in the Pacific. The maneuvers, scheduled for late September, October, and November, involve nearly 40,000 soldiers, sailors, and marines, and are designed to dislodge an imaginary “aggressor” force from the Hawaiian Islands. General Mark W. Clark, Commanding General of the Sixth Army, is overall commander. The First Task Fleet will conduct the assault on Oahu with complete wartime realism. Secrecy shrouds the probable date of departure from mainland waters and the projected D-Day on the beaches of Oahu. As in wartime island operations, the task fleet will include a full array of Naval vessels ranging from fully loaded tank landing ships to powerful aircraft carriers. “Miki,” a Hawaiian word meaning, “readiness” or “diligent,” is one of a number of joint exercises planned by the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the Army, Navy and Air Force, each designed to accomplish a specific mission for maintaining the armed forces at a high degree of efficiency. War on Insect Reaches Huge Proportions Sacramento, (WNS) — Man’s constant battle for survival against the onslaught on the insect resulted in the inspection of more than a half million units if 13,338 shipments to California from foreign ports last month. A. P. Messenger, chief of the bureau of plant quarantine of the state department of agriculture, made this announcement today, stating that of the shipments inspected, 196 were rejected because the origin of the Fuerte tree on which this 'would-be' avocado grew, Mr. Neubauer harvested $130 in fruit with possibly two more lugs that he missed and which fell to the ground later. This tree is now thirty feet high and has a limb spread of 45 feet. The freak displayed showed the likeness of a dog and from the side view, the animal was sitting up as though begging for an avocado, maybe, with his front paws placed close to the body as a dog usually does when sitting up. The outline of the mouth was clearly visible with his tongue hanging out as though the heat was bothering. The nose shape was that of a bull-dog with the eyes well formed and ears close back to the head. Even his tail showed his begging attitude. Turning the fruit around to the opposite end, the likeness of a man was shown with eyes, ears, nose visible and left arm upraised. The right arm wasn't quite so well formed and the lower part of the would-be body was shaped as though it was a piece of statuary fixed to place on a pedestal, flat across the bottom. Mr. Neubauer is extremely proud of this tree and stated that most of his extra time is put to its culture. SON TO ZIMMERMANS Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Zimmerman of 714 South Lemon street, this city, announce the birth of a son on Wednesday, September 28, born at Santa Ana Community hospital. He weighed 7-pounds, 12½-ounces. Sacramento, (WNS) — Man's constant battle for survival against the onslaught on the insect resulted in the inspection of more than a half million units if 13,338 shipments to California from foreign ports last month. A. P. Messenger, chief of the bureau of plant quarantine of the state department of agriculture, made this announcement today, stating that of the shipments inspected, 196 were rejected because of insect infestation, and 274 were required to be treated before being released. Fruit Fly Danger Constant fear of the department, Messenger said, is that the Oriental fruit fly, which has virtually wrecked agriculture in the Hawaiian Islands, will slip into California. If the fly should get a foothold in this state, he declared, the damage to California agriculture would be tremendous, and the elimination expensive. Consequently, quarantine inspectors are watching particularly for this insect and report that last month, out of 257 violations of quarantines from Hawaii, 248 lbs were fruit fly hosts. The shipments, they said, included avocados, bananas, cocoanuts, cucumbers, egg-plant, limes, macadamia nuts, magoes, tomatoes, papaysas, peaches, chili peppers, bell peppers, pineapple, plums, lemons, grapefruit, oranges, and Vanda orchid flowers.
