Bradley; "Our Singing City Receipt Taxes in State Lead Nation Sacramento (WNS)—California leads all other states in the number of cities over 10,000 population which impose gross receipts taxes, a survey of tax practices throughout the nation revealed today. Furthermore, the number of California cities collecting sales tax is seven times greater than the number of cities in all of the other 47 states combined. Of the 101 U.S. cities imposing a gross receipts tax 27 are in California while 42 California cities collect a sales tax out of a total of 50 in the nation. All figures are as of January 1949. Since that time a number of additional California cities have joined the ranks of those collecting special non-property taxes. High Sales Tax The reports also show California cities impose as high a sales tax as any other city in the nation (1%) except New York which collects 2 per cent. However, the situation there is not comparable with California cities inasmuch as the state of New York does not have a sales tax while California has levied a three per cent sales and use tax. In some cases California cities collect both a retail sales tax and a gross receipts tax. Twenty-seven states of the union collect some form of general sales tax but only 19 of them (California included) impose both a corporate income and sales tax. A local man bought so many labor saving devices he has to work twenty hours a day to pay for have a sales tax while California has levied a three per cent sales and use tax.
