MWD Meets Increased Demands With Projects Totalling $6,400,000
Keeping up with demands for Colorado river water in southern California has called for projects totaling $6,400,-000, it was announced today by Julian Hinds, general manager and chief engineer of the Metropolitan Water District. This amount covers the recently completed addition which doubles the capacity of the District’s water softening plant and pipe lines to serve the West Basin Municipal Water District, Long Beach and San Marino.
Construction work on an 80 million gallon per day line for Long Beach will get under way this week, while construction has begun on a five million gallon per day capacity line for San Marino, Hinds said.
Second River Pipeline
The new line for Long Beach will be the second Colorado river pipe line to furnish the imported water to that city. Falling ground water levels and the continued growth of Long Beach has increased the draft on its present line to the maximum capacity of 20 million gallons per day, it was stated. The new line will cost approximately $700,000.
The Long Beach line will take off at the District's Palos Verdes feeder between 184th and 189th streets and run easterly along Victoria street at Wilmington avenue, at which point it will be tapped by Long Beach. It is one of the largest lines built by the District in recent years, having a diameter of 54 inches. Completion of the three-mile-long line is set for May 1, 1950.
San Marino Line
The San Marino line will extend from a point north of Paloma street on Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena to the Lamaneda Park reservoir, a distance of more than a mile. The $85,000 project is set for completion by October of this year.
The $1,600,000 Colorado river pipe line to the West Basin Municipal Water District is moving forward rapidly, with all pipe laying essentially completed last week. Contract completion data of the line is April 1, 1950.
The $4,000,000 softening plant addition built by the District was put into operation this month to meet the sharply increasing demand for Colorado river water in southern California. The addition doubled the capacity of the plant to 200 million gallons per day.
"The extensive construction program necessitated by mounting water demands on the District by the nearly 4,000,000 people it serves points up the complete dependence upon the Colorado river as southern California's last water hole," Hinds declared.
Water Rights Threatened
"California's long established water rights on the Colorado river must be protected by its citizens from encroachment by such projects as the proposed central Arizona land reclamation bill now pending in Congress. Water for which southern California citizens have made tremendous investments and which is needed by them would be taken away to irrigate desert land in Arizona largely developed during war years by land speculators."
Hinds urged southern Californians to write eastern friends asking that they in turn request their congressmen to oppose the Central Arizona Project and support the California-Nevada sponsored resolution calling for a determination of water rights among lower basin states by the United States Supreme Court.
