Expect 4,000 Vets to Study In California Sacramento, (WNS)—More than 4,000 veterans are expected to take advantage of educational facilities offered by the United States government under the GI bill next fall, according to the state department of veterans affairs. Last fall, the department said there were 3,542 World War II veterans enrolled in California schools, and in the fall of 1947, a total of 2,739. Veterans who desire to take advantage of the program are advised by the state department to take all steps toward qualifying. In addition to the federal program, the department said the state provides assistance which is less generous than the educational benefits provided under the GI bill. The state assistance program, it was stated, is customarily used by veterans who have exhausted their GI entitlement without completing their education. To be eligible under the state program, a veteran must have been born in or entered service from California. If he qualifies, he is entitled to payment for tuition, books and supplies, and a subsistence allowance of $40 per month. The maximum total expenditure for any one veteran by the state is $1,000.
