Cities; Counties To Get Increased Liquor Fee Funds
Sacramento, (WNS)—A speed-up procedure in the state board of equalization will result in increased allocations to cities and counties of liquor license fees, officials of the board have announced.
For the fiscal year 1949-50, the allocations will be 45 per cent greater than past allocations, or approximately $11,888,000, the board said.
Increase in the appropriation for this one year, it was stated, is a result of speed-up of procedures through improved accounting methods, to permit future distributions to include liquor license fees earned more nearly to the date of apportionment.
As a result of the procedural change, cities and counties will receive earnings for a 14-month period in the present fiscal year.
Appropriations are made in October and April, the board said, and in the future, such appropriations will include earnings thro' the month of August for October, and through February for April.
Cities and counties receive 100 per cent of the license fees collected by the board.

With the need for recruits for the regular Army mounting, a new two-year enlistment program has been opened by the recruiting Service which is applicable only to those men who have not had previous military service, and will impose the same reserve service obligations as the 21-month enlistments authorized under the Draft Act.
Service benefits of good pay, advancement, free room, board, clothing and a thirty day vacation each year, with better than full pay, will apply, but no choice of assignment will be allowed. All men enlisting for two years will be assigned as the needs of the service dictates.
At the end of their two-year enlistment, the men will be placed on an active Reserve status, and will serve for a three-year period of Reserve duty.
The Army also authorized a more liberal choice of assignment for a three-year enlistment of men who had no previous service. These are, infantry, field artillery, coast artillery, armored cavalry or corps of engineers.
Current choice assignments for men with previous military service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or Marine Corps are open today to qualified applicants by the regular Army. How 'safety-circle' driving cuts down accidents
"Know your safety-circle!" is an important lesson taught Standard of California drivers...and perhaps it can be helpful to you.
Your safety-circle is the distance you need to meet an emergency situation—a car stopping suddenly ahead, for example. Our drivers get a special test which tells them exactly how fast they react, but in general, it takes the average person a full second to see a hazard, think what to do and act. So, driving on a clear road, at 30 miles an hour, you should stay at least 7 car lengths behind the car ahead; when you drive 45 miles an hour, stay behind 13 car lengths.
More than 5,000 Standard drivers have studied this and many other safety principles in our Driver Training Program, besides passing thorough visual examinations. Last year, they drove 41 million miles with an accident rate 60% lower than the national trucking fleet average.
