SPORTS Plans for Annual Snowbird Flight Near Completion Final arrangements for one of the outstanding small boat races in the world, the "Flight of the Snowbirds," are rapidly drawing to a close and it is anticipated that this year's event, the 14th Flight, will be more spectacular than ever. The scene of the annual flight is Newport Harbor and this year is scheduled for July 31st. According to Hay Langenheim, executive secretary of the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the sponsoring organization for the annual race, it is expected that over 150 of the little cat-boats will be entered. Select Committee At a recent meeting of the general committee for the 1949 Flight, headed by Chairman John Daniell, the following men were placed in charge of various phases of the vent: Board of Referees (Entry Qualifications and Protests)—Richard Fenton, J. M. Webster, John Daniell. In charge of Patrolling—Harbor Master Russell Craig. Committee Boat and Trophies—Sandy MacKay. Patrol Judge—Commodore Frank Simpson. Judge of Starts—Commodore Cass Smith. Judge of Finishes—Commodore Jones is the boy who upset apple-cart at Olympic recen­tions when he had Enrique Bolanos quite a sweat in a schedule "warm-up." Bolanos, who according to press releases, is the world's num­ber one contender for the lightweave crown is supposed to meet Cha­pion Ike Williams for charity of these days. To keep in shape his manag­matched him with Jones who preceded to knock the whooping out of Bolanos—having him on verge of a knock-out in the ninth Bolanos eventually emerged battered victor in a decision which was hotly contested by eight judges. Aragon has proved to be a m³ capable baby-sitter—having roped six charges to sleep in noth flat thus far this year. But Bala Face Jones throws them from port-side and has no cause to frightened by Arrogant Art. In fact folks—Friday's event the Peroxide Palace should be natural. Patrol Judge—Commodore William Crosby, and Harvey Somers in charge of Publicity Boats. 30 Awards Over thirty beautiful awards will be made at the trophy presentation which is scheduled to be held immediately behind the Balboa Pavillion at 6:30 p.m. on the day of the race, July 31st, 1949. The presentation has been placed in the capable hands of Frank Linnell as Master of Ceremonies. The starting gun for the race is at 1:30 p.m. on that day and all skippers between the ages of 6 and 96, boys and girls, are invited to participate in this grand spectacle. Entry Blanks Entry blanks may be obtained at the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Balboa Yacht Club, Lido Isle Yacht Club, J. A. Beek's office, McNally and Valley Boat Landings, or the Harbor Master's Office, and it is essential that all entries be turned in as far in advance of the race as possible so that Skipper Badges may be furnished each entrant. Members of the General Committee in charge of this year's Flight of the Snowbirds include J. M. Webster, H. B. Stewart, Earl G. Corkett, Ray Loomis, Converse Wurdemann, W. A. Berls, Thomas B. Rutter, Warner B. Gates, Commodore Cliff Chapman, Mayor Dick Drake, J. A. Beek, Russell Craig, John Daniell, Sandy MacKay, Andrew Brown, Kenneth Wilson, Dr. W. T. Mooney and George Michaud. Rifle Range Work Progresses Completion of the new city rifle range off North Olive street in the industrial tract was accelerated as members of the Associated Rifle clubs of Anaheim donated their time and efforts last Thursday night in an energetic work party. Construction of the backstop is nearing completion. The work- Optimists; Legion In Twin Bill at La Palma Tonite The Optimists and the American Legion will engage in another night doubleheader this evening Ike Walton Charter Trips Begin Today First in a series of 16 Izaak Walton charter boat trips began today (Thursday) when a group of 12 local fishermen left for the albacore-rich waters on "Happy Landings," charter craft out of Norm's Landing, Newport Beach. This series of charter trips during the albacore season was organized by Bill Wallop, now on vacation in Colorado. In view of the many albacore flags evident over the three-day July 4th holiday at nearby beaches, the party left here with high hopes of nabbing limits of the deep sea fish. TROUT ANGLERS TAKE LIMITS Trout anglers have taken much limits lately on Nelson Creek and along the Middle Fork Feather River in Plumas county according to the National Auction mobile club. Their luck has been only fair on Bucks Lake in the same area. Collins Sponsors $1 Million State Olympic Fund Sacramento (WNS) — Creation of a $1 million fund to enable holding of the 1952 Olympic games in California has been approved by the state finance committee. The fund would be provided a measure authored by Assembler Sam L. Collins of Orland County. The money would be paid to the state from the proceeds of the Olympic Games they are held here and otherwise would revert to the state's general fund if unused. Rifle Range Work Progresses Completion of the new city rifle range off North Olive street in the industrial tract was accelerated as members of the Associated Rifle clubs of Anaheim donated their time and efforts last Thursday night in an energetic work party. Construction of the backstop is nearing completion. The workers continued building the shack for which a reinforced tin door has been made by Hugh Kelsey in his metal shop. Among those present were Chas. Watters, construction chief; Major Ralph Comstock, commandant of the local high school cadets; Glen Hein, Police Officer Norbert DeCook; Bob Williams, Gene Stevens, Ted Anderson, Charles and Gene Waldo and Bob Mason. Date of the next work party and tools needed will be announced by the riflemen in the near future. WALKING NEAR TRAFFIC In walking near traffic, a little carelessness can kill you, warns the Public Safety Department. Alert pedestrians never step off a curb without taking a good look up and down the street, never walk against the lights at intersections, and never walk with their backs to oncoming traffic when walking along the open highway. Alert pedestrians stay alive. SAFETY ON THE HIGHWAY Safety on the highway depends a lot on common courtesy and common sense, declares the National Automobile Club. Limit catches of large white sea bass, yellowtail, barracuda, and halibut have been brought in to the piers along the coast of Orange county. SALMON ANGLERS HAVE LUCK Salmon anglers have been enjoying some first-rate sport recently in and near Humboldt Bay in Humboldt county, according to recent reports. While they have been taking numerous fair sized fish inside the bay and between the jetties, they have been taken some very large fish just out the entrance near the Whiskey Buoy. SMALLMOUTH BASS FISHING GOOD Smallmouth bass fishing been good during the past year along the lower parts of the Branch of the Feather River and the Feather River are Oroville in Butte county, repelling the National Automobile club.
