Social and Club Activities GRACE THOMPSON MINDER—Phone 2206 Vera Mae Heil Shower Honoree Honoring Miss Vera Mae Heil, a bridal shower was given by Miss Jerry Gibson, 10042 East Ball road, Anaheim, recently. The honoree was presented with a large orchid by Mrs. Emil Martens (nee Betty Tannahill). As Miss Heil entered the attractively decorated rooms of the Gibson home she was showered with confetti which had filled one of a myriad of pastel balloons. A rainbow of crepe paper ending in a basket which held the shower gifts, representing the "pot of gold at the end of the rainbow," accented the archway between the dining and living rooms. Favors of a miniature bride for Miss Heil and of bridesmaids for the other 20 guests were created by Mrs. N. Gibson, mother of the hostess. Also present was Mrs. Julius Heil, the bride-elect's mother, of 630 South Palm street. Three games were enjoyed with prizes for "Happiness of the Bride" and "Hearts" going to Barbara Bohan. The guest of honor won first place in the scrambled letter game by spelling the most kitchen articles from alphabet. Ina Chatterton Makes Debut at Holiday Stage Ina Claire Chatterton makes her first appearance with Holiday Stage next week when she plays the real-life part of an actress in the Rachel Crothers comedy, "Susan and God," which opens next Monday evening at the summer theatre on Highway 101. Miss Chatterton is a native Californian and is reveling in its familiar surroundings. She has come to the Tustin theatre direct from a number of consecutive leads in West Coast productions that include such sophisticated pieces as "Private Lives," "Biography," and "Blithe Spirit." Her role in "Susan and God" is tailored to her gift for smart repartee and rapid dialogue. "Susan and God," the three-act comedy in which Gertrude Lawrence delighted New York audiences, follows this week's laugh-producer, "Taming of the Shrew," currently playing to enthusiastic audiences. The new comedy will star Mary Finney as Susan and will feature Peter Adams as the husband, Barry. July 25 for Lucile Cummins young soprano, and Edwin St. American baritone. In addition several solos by both singers, will join in a duet, "They D Believe Me," by Jerome K. from the musical, "The Girl F Utah." A special Independence Day program of American music was tured on the July 4 programs by John Charles Thomas, famous itone, singing his popular reation of "Home on The Range" other selections typical of country. The 57-piece Bell Telephone chestra, conducted by Don Voorhees, will accompany the tists as well as play special m for the forthcoming programs. Home Nursing Class Popular Well attended by county and women were home nurseries for mother and baby care conducted by the Southern Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross, according to Mrs. thur Wade, home nursing chaperon. The course was completed this week at the Santa Ana chi ter headquarters, 1104 West Eight street. Among students attending with Mr. and Mrs. John Longford Anaheim; Mr. and Mrs. Doris F. Ralston of Buena Park and Mrs. George Grupe of Fulton, in addition to a number Santa Ana and beach city residents. Through lecture and demonstrations, the classes were taught Mrs. Gertrude Andrew, registered nurse. The handling of a small infant was practiced with a like doll. Barbecue at Andrade Home Members of the Andrade family enjoyed a union barbecue party Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Andrade, 620 South Emily street, Anaheim, acting as host and hostess, assisted by their son, Wayne, and daughter, Carole Ann. Others present for the steak dinner and informal get-together included Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pendleton of El Centro; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dolbee and daughter, Barbara, and Ira Ackey, all of Placentia; and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Boisseranc of Yorba. Beach Party for Episcopal Class A beach supper party at Corona del Mar was enjoyed by members of the senior church school class of St. Michael's Episcopal church recently as a reward for holding the highest class attendance record for the year. New fall advisors for the group led by Miss Adah Wilcox, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thompson, were introduced during the social affair. The active church class will soon send a large box of clothing to a Greek family of seven children, it was announced. Recent projects included the purchase of brass offering plates to match the large alms basin in the church. Class officers include Dorothy Kuchel, president; Jack Conklin, vice-president; Diane Kear, secretary, and Bette Appley, treasurer. Relief Corps Meets In Regular Session The A. B. Paul Women's Relief Corps met at their regular meeting place, the IOOF hall on West Center street, Tuesday afternoon, the session beginning with a pot-luck luncheon at the noon hour. Telephone Hour Programs Set A varied July musical program is being presented on the Telephone Hour broadcasts, heard each Monday evening at 9 o'clock, R. J. Rossberg, manager of the local Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company office, announced this week. Heard over NBC stations, Claudio Arrau, Chilean pianist, will conclude his July 11 concert with the finale of Grieg's "Concerto in A Minor." Polynya Stoska, American-born soprano, will present the July 18 broadcast, with her repertoire to include the Irish "Danny Boy." Initial appearances will be on Mr. and Mrs. John Longford; Anaheim; Mr. and Mrs. Don F. Ralston of Buena Park and Mrs. George Grupe of Fulton, in addition to a number Santa Ana and beach city residents. Myers, teacher foreign languages at Fullerton high school, formerly Anaheim, is planning to attend summer school in Mexico. He left with his wife, Monica with plans of viewing Carlsbad Caverns and of visiting friends Mexico City. The county man will enroll in the "Eseuela Interamericana Verano" in Saltillo, capital of state of Coahuila, located 53 miles west of Monterey, Mexico. Relief Corps Meets In Regular Session The A. B. Paul Women's Relief Corps met at their regular meeting place, the IOOF hall on West Center street, Tuesday afternoon, the session beginning with a pot-luck luncheon at the noon hour. During the business session in the afternoon, two new members by transfer were welcomed. The reports of the various committees told of the month's philanthropic work carried with $4.50 being spent for relief, $13 for child welfare, 51 calls were made, 15 bouquets sent to sick and shutins and eight sprays sent for rites of deceased members. Mary Hatfield, president, presided. Etta Countess was winner of the door prize and Mrs. Ethel Storey was winner of the special prize, a cake. PASTOR, FAMILY ON VACATION TRIP The Rev. John Kimball Saville, pastor of St. Michael's Episcopal church, and his wife and two daughters, Susan and Deborah, left recently on a July vacation trip to Oregon. During his absence regular church services each Sunday morning at 8 and 10 o'clock will be conducted by the Rev. William J. Hatter. Anyone wishing to contact Rev. PLACENTIA COUPLE HOST AT PARTY Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Duncan of Placentia, were charming hosts at a party given for more than 30 friends at the Balboa Bay club during the July 4th holiday. NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY PICNIC SUNDAY Several thousand persons are expected to attend the New YorkNew Jersey joint annual picnic at Bixby Park, Long Beach, all day Sunday, July 10. The program will feature a two-hour variety show commencing with a concert by the Long Beach Municipal band at 1 p.m. Registration lists will be conveniently placed where all may register and meet friends from the old home state. Those not wishing to bring a basket lunch may purchase food on the grounds, Harriett C. Bowen, publicity chairman, 20 Orange avenue, Long Beach, announced. VAN BERKELAER PARTY ENJOYED A barbecue dinner was co-hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Gay Van Berkelaer, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Gay Van Berkelaer, Jr., Monday, in the garden of their spacious Cerritos avenue home, this city. The affair was attended by 12 friends and relatives. MERRILY SUE LAMONT TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY Little Miss Merrily Sue LaMont, daughter of Alan LaMont of this city, will celebrate her sixth birthday on Friday when she will have as her guests her little playmates of the kindergarten class of George Washington school at a party in Anaheim city park. Beta Sigma Phi Breakfast Set Semi-monthly breakfast of the Southern California Council of Beta Sigma Phi, international non-academic sorority, will be held Sunday, July 17, at 10 a.m. at Imig Manor hotel in San Diego. General chairman for the morning will be Miss Martha Lucas, vice-president of the San Diego city council. The Southern Caliifornia Council boasts a membership of approximately 100 chapters in view of which a large attendance is expected at San Diego. Theme of the program will be "Vacation Daze" and will feature an aquatic exhibition by the San Diego public recreational group at the Imig Manor hotel's swimming pool. A business meeting will follow with Mrs. F. N. Masemore of Arcadia, newly elected president presiding. Time and place of the September breakfast will be announced during the conclave, Helen M. Carruthers, southland council press chairman, 401 North Del Mar avenue, San Gabriel, stated. LICENSE TO WED A marriage license was obtained by Mitsuru Tabatam, 7111 East Main street, Westminster, and Hisaye Ito, 13686 Berrydale street, Garden Grove, late last week at the county court house in Santa Ana.
