Old Age Pension Applications in County Decreases
Applications for old age pensions in Orange county, for the week ending April 2, totaled 40, the State Department of Social Welfare announced today, compared to 48 the previous week.
The county received 1118 applications since December 31, when provisions of Proposition 4 went into effect, and on April 2, had 654 applications pending, some of which had been received prior to the first of the year.
Throughout the state, 2,230 applications were received last week, as compared to 2,274 the previous week, with 49,413 filed since the first of the year. There were 30,281 applications pending, said Mrs. Myrtle Williams, director of the department.
Water power accounts for only five per cent of all energy produced in America.

Examine Citrus Trees for Gummosis Now
Now is the time to examine citrus trees for gummosis, says farm advisor H. E. Wahlberg.
Each year growers lose many hundreds of young citrus replants from the soil-borne disease called gummosis, according to the Extension Service.
Trouble with this disease has been on the increase lately. This has undoubtedly been because of the swing away from sour orange root which was resistant to gummosis. Sour orange root is no longer used because it is susceptible to another new disease known as quick decline. Sweet orange root-stock can be used successfully if sufficient care is given to the trees, he said.
Examine Young Replants
This is the time of year to examine young citrus replants for beginning infections of gummosis. New infections should be treated by removing all of the infected bark. More information on this treatment can be obtained from the county farm advisor, 1104 West Eighth street, Santa Ana.
Prevention is good insurance. Weeds should be kept hoed from around the trees so that the ground can dry out at the trunk. Wraps for protection against sunburn and frost should be broken loose from their mud seal with the ground and raised about an inch to permit the air to circulate under the wrap.

Warn Resorts To Set Summer Prices Cautiously
The Automobile Club of Southern California served warning on resort and hotel operators to set room charges, food prices and even boating and horseback riding fees with care this summer if they expect to lure the “shopping” 1949 vacationist’s business.
“We have experienced another Phil Stanton Residence Sold
The former Phil Stanton home at Brookhurst avenue and Manchester boulevard, west of Anaheim, was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt, 1346 South Broadway, Santa Ana, it was shown in a deed filed in the county recorder’s office.
The couple bought the property for $49,500 from the Bethesda Camp Meeting Grounds, a corporation.
he added.
The club spokesman predicted that approximately 70 per cent of California motorists would not leave the state this summer for their vacation pleasures.
AAA reports from Florida and eastern resort centers indicate this “shopping” temper of the 1949 traveler is nationwide.
U. S. travel, the surveys show, is comparable to last year’s record-breaking pitch but vacationists are willing to accept a less favorable substitute when the haven of their choice doesn’t fit their badly-bent pocketbook.
Nationwide reports also reveal that more families are planning to take their autos on their vacations this year to save on transportation costs.

To Set Summer Prices Cautiously
The Automobile Club of Southern California served warning on resort and hotel operators to set room charges, food prices and even boating and horseback riding fees with care this summer if they expect to lure the "shopping" 1949 vacationist's business.
"We have experienced another record-breaking tourist rush this winter," an Outing Bureau spokesman declared. "But they spent less money, picked closer destinations and stayed shorter periods than in any previous year since 1941."
He predicted this trend would continue throughout the year.
"The bulk of reservations now being made for the summer months indicate that the heads of families are comparing prices unashamedly," the club official stated.
"About three-fourths of the inquiries we receive are from motorists who are considering 'roughing it' in the woods, camping near beaches, or just relaxing at bargain resorts to cut vacation costs."

'Ramona' to Open 22nd Season on April 23 at Hemet
Many organizations and groups are planning to attend the 1949 centennial production of "Ramona," California's famed historic outdoor play which opens Saturday of next week in the Ramona Bowl near Hemet.
Playing dates for this 22nd season of Ramona will be on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, April 23 and 24, April 30 and May 1, and May 7 and 8.
The Ramona play cast of more than 350 persons is now in intensive rehearsals under the supervision of director William Bersen. This season, Consuelo Young, talented young Los Angeles actress, will be seen for the first time in the title role of Ramona. William Pullen of Los Angeles will, for the second consecutive season, appear in the supporting role of the ill-fated Alessandro.
Ramona play, a pageant-drama based on Helen Hunt Jackson's famed novel, is staged annually by the people of the Hemet-San Jacinto Valley as a non-profit community enterprise and in the very locale where historical events of the novel took place.
Ramona Bowl, a modernized, natural ampitheater, has a seating capacity of 6000. There is ample, free parking space for thousands of autos directly at the entrance to the bowl.
The largest flour mills in the world are located at Minneapolis, Minn. The state's products are large and varied, while it also produces 60 per cent of the country's iron ore.
