Newport Harbor Sunset League Champs Again
By Dean Gautschy
Newport Harbor recorded their sixth consecutive Sunset league track victory by defeating the Anaheim Colonists 64-40 in a dual meet held on the local field last Tuesday afternoon.
Misfortune followed the locals throughout the meet with Dick Golden getting spiked in the 440 and Larry Weaver straining a muscle in his right leg in the broadjump.
The Colonists collected five first places, but were unable to record very many second and third places. Coach Sam Keith had to forfeit the relay because of Colonist injuries in earlier events. Dick Carson continued to dominate the hurdles by scoring first places both in the highs and lows.
Larry Weaver managed to take the broad jump and score a second place in the pole vault competition. Curtis Meade barely took the varsity 100 in almost a photo finish. The other Colonist winner was Bill Larson in the mile event.

Cancer Drive Gets AU Support
The Anoranco will lend its full support to the American Cancer Society’s 1949 fund raising campaign to help California raise $1,-050,253, its share of the national goal of $14,500,000.
Governor Earl Warren recently formally proclaimed the month of April as “Cancer Control Month” and called on all Californians to lend their full support to the nation-wide campaign.
Members of the Anoranco staff have decided that the least they could do to help control cancer would be to conduct a drive among the classes of students at their school.
This program will go into effect as soon as plans can be laid. All funds raised will be turned over to the local cancer society to be added to their quota when it is added to the state-wide total.
Nearly everyone knows just how dreadful this disease is. With this in mind and the desire to really wage a war on cancer, the members of the Anoranco staff hope and expect real support of their drive as students have always cooperated with the Anoranco in the past when the Anoranco staff staged a program of this kind.
